During recent years, Mg reinforced polylactic acid (PLA) composites have emerged as potential biocompatible and bioabsorbable materials for biomedical applications. It has been shown ...that Mg particles added to a matrix based on a biodegradable polymer can address the lack of bioactivity and the low mechanical properties of the polymers and, furthermore, it can counteract the detrimental effects associated to the high degradation rate of Mg, as alkalinization and elevated H2 release. Additionally, the polymer can protect the Mg particles, by tailoring their degradation rate. Former processing of these composites performed by extrusion, compression and injection molding employed Mg contents up to 10 wt%. Higher amounts of Mg resulted in heterogeneous materials and thermally degraded matrices, with the corresponding higher degradation rate. In the present work, Mg reinforced PLA films with Mg content as high as 50 wt% were obtained without compromising the thermal stability of the polymer. Firstly, a successful dispersion of Mg microparticles was achieved by a breakthrough in processing introducing a colloidal step where organic additives were added to modify the Mg particle surface and promote a chemically stable suspension. The resulting colloidal suspension was then used as feedstock to obtain composite films by tape casting. The films show advantageous in vitro behaviour in terms of degradation, hydrogen release and oxygen permeability. In addition, the viability with fibroblast cells (MEF) opens a window of opportunity for these composite films as bioabsorbable material for tissue engineering and wound dressing applications.
Magnesium materials have extraordinary biodegradable properties and bioactive behavior due to release of Mg2+ ions, which offer a promising opportunity for their applicability as biomaterials for tissue regeneration. However, Mg is one of the most reactive metals with a high degradation rate. In contact with water produces H2, associated with a risk of failure of the implant. One alternative to minimize this drawback is the use of Mg particles surrounded by a biodegradable biocompatible polymer such as polylactic acid (PLA) to obtain PLA/Mg composites. In this work we processed Mg reinforced PLA in the shape of films that would be suitable for tissue regeneration. In vitro behavior of PLA/Mg films demonstrated that Mg2+ ions increase the fibroblast cells growth.
Recent years have witnessed the arrival of new methodological horizons in teacher training. Technological resources and mobile connections play a major role in these studies. At the same time, there ...is a focus on play to increase commitment and motivation. It is in this context that gamification and flipped-classroom strategies have arisen. This paper presents the results of a training program with future Primary Education teachers using gamification and flipped-classroom strategies and techniques. The aim was that teachers in training acquire competences in proposing innovative teaching units. The learning achieved through the program was evaluated by collecting perceptions via a questionnaire and using an observation scale of the didactic units designed. The program was implemented in four classroom groups (N = 210) at the University of Murcia (Spain). Descriptive statistics are shown; mean tests (t of Student and ANOVA of one factor); non-parametric tests (U-Mann Whitney test); and Pearson correlations between subscales. The data show a very positive assessment of the learning achieved and the strategies applied in the training program. The learning outcomes were satisfactory, although lower than perceived. Some differences between class groups and gender are discussed, and some weaknesses of the program are pointed out.

The recent success of mRNA vaccines in SARS-CoV-2 clinical trials is in part due to the development of lipid nanoparticle delivery systems that not only efficiently express the mRNA-encoded immunogen ...after intramuscular injection, but also play roles as adjuvants and in vaccine reactogenicity. We present an overview of mRNA delivery systems and then focus on the lipid nanoparticles used in the current SARS-CoV-2 vaccine clinical trials. The review concludes with an analysis of the determinants of the performance of lipid nanoparticles in mRNA vaccines.
The debated question on the possible relation between the Earth's magnetic field and climate has been usually focused on direct correlations between different time series representing both systems. ...However, the physical mechanism able to potentially explain this connection is still an open issue. Finding hints about how this connection could work would suppose an important advance in the search of an adequate physical mechanism. Here, we propose an innovative information-theoretic tool, i.e. the transfer entropy, as a good candidate for this scope because is able to determine, not simply the possible existence of a connection, but even the direction in which the link is produced. We have applied this new methodology to two real time series, the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) area extent at the Earth's surface (representing the geomagnetic field system) and the Global Sea Level (GSL) rise (for the climate system) for the last 300 years, to measure the possible information flow and sense between them. This connection was previously suggested considering only the long-term trend while now we study this possibility also in shorter scales. The new results seem to support this hypothesis, with more information transferred from the SAA to the GSL time series, with about 90% of confidence level. This result provides new clues on the existence of a link between the geomagnetic field and the Earth's climate in the past and on the physical mechanism involved because, thanks to the application of the transfer entropy, we have determined that the sense of the connection seems to go from the system that produces geomagnetic field to the climate system. Of course, the connection does not mean that the geomagnetic field is fully responsible for the climate changes, rather that it is an important driving component to the variations of the climate.

A key aspect of the design of evolutionary and swarm intelligence algorithms is studying their performance. Statistical comparisons are also a crucial part which allows for reliable conclusions to be ...drawn. In the present paper we gather and examine the approaches taken from different perspectives to summarise the assumptions made by these statistical tests, the conclusions reached and the steps followed to perform them correctly. In this paper, we conduct a survey on the current trends of the proposals of statistical analyses for the comparison of algorithms of computational intelligence and include a description of the statistical background of these tests. We illustrate the use of the most common tests in the context of the Competition on single-objective real parameter optimisation of the IEEE Congress on Evolutionary Computation (CEC) 2017 and describe the main advantages and drawbacks of the use of each kind of test and put forward some recommendations concerning their use.

Absorbable medical devices must be developed in order to have an appropriate degradation rate in agreement with the healing rate of bone in the implantation site. In this work, ...biodegradable composites formed by a polylactic acid matrix reinforced with 10%wt. magnesium microparticles were processed and their in vitro degradation investigated during 28days. A joint analysis of the amount of H2 released, the changes in pH in buffered (PBS) and non-buffered media (distilled water), the variations in mass, microstructure and the mechanical performance of the specimens was developed. The main aim was to elucidate the relevance of Mg particles shape on tailoring the degradation kinetics of these novel composites. The results show that the shape of the Mg reinforcing particles plays a crucial role in the degradation rate of PLA/Mg composites, with spherical particles promoting a lower degradation rate than irregular particles. This fact is only partially due to the smaller surface area to volume ratio of the spherical particles. Irregular particles promote a faster formation of cracks and, therefore, an increasingly faster degradation of the polymeric matrix. In every case, the amount of H2 released by the composites was well below that released by monolithic Mg. The pH of PBS during degradation remained always within 7.2 and 7.4. PLA/Mg reinforced with spherical particles retains more than 90% of its mechanical properties after 7days of immersion and more than 60% after 28days.
The increasing demand for temporary orthopaedic implants is the driving force to seek new strategies to decrease costs and simultaneously improve patients comfort as well as simplify surgical procedures. Resorbable medical devices must be developed in order to have an appropriate degradation rate in agreement with the healing rate of bone. We are presenting for the first time results of the degradation kinetics of a new material based on polylactic acid reinforced with 10%wt. Mg microparticles. This work analyzes the relevance of Mg particle shape (irregular and spherical) on tailoring the degradation behaviour of these composites. Conclusions withdrawn from this study help to customize bioabsorbable materials in order to meet the requirements for a specific application and patient.
Abstract
Previous research work suggests that predictable target motion such as sinusoidal movement can be anticipated by the visual system, thereby improving the accommodative response. The validity ...of predictable motion for studying human dynamic accommodation is sometimes put into question. The aim of this work was to assess the effect of anticipation along with learning (and motivation, etc.) and fatigue (and boredom, loss of attention, etc.) on dynamic accommodation experiments from a practical perspective. Specifically, changes in amplitude and temporal phase lag were estimated within and between trials as 9 adult observers were instructed to focus on a stimulus that oscillated sinusoidally towards and away from the eye at specific temporal frequencies. On average, amplitude decreased whereas phase increased within trials. No evidence of anticipation or learning was observed either within or between trials. Fatigue consistently dominated anticipation and learning within the course of each trial. Even if the eye is equipped by a

as it is often assumed, fatigue confounds the results from dynamic accommodation experiments more than anticipation or learning.
Genome-wide association studies have identified loci underlying human diseases, but the causal nucleotide changes and mechanisms remain largely unknown. Here we developed a fine-mapping algorithm to ...identify candidate causal variants for 21 autoimmune diseases from genotyping data. We integrated these predictions with transcription and cis-regulatory element annotations, derived by mapping RNA and chromatin in primary immune cells, including resting and stimulated CD4(+) T-cell subsets, regulatory T cells, CD8(+) T cells, B cells, and monocytes. We find that ∼90% of causal variants are non-coding, with ∼60% mapping to immune-cell enhancers, many of which gain histone acetylation and transcribe enhancer-associated RNA upon immune stimulation. Causal variants tend to occur near binding sites for master regulators of immune differentiation and stimulus-dependent gene activation, but only 10-20% directly alter recognizable transcription factor binding motifs. Rather, most non-coding risk variants, including those that alter gene expression, affect non-canonical sequence determinants not well-explained by current gene regulatory models.

The amplitude is ultraviolet finite, not only in four dimensions, but in five dimensions as well. ...The observed extra cancellations provide additional nontrivial evidence that N=8 supergravity in four dimensions may be ultraviolet finite to all orders of perturbation theory.
