The ancient architectural elements preserved or reused in many monuments of the city of Tunis deserve to be cataloged and studied. This long-term and overdue investigation will perhaps shed light, ...once accomplished, on the thorny question of the provenance of a large number of these archaeological objects. Should they be considered as vestiges of ancient Tunes, or should we rather attribute them to other sites, such Carthage? This problem also arises for the inscription that is published here, engraved on a Corinthian capital reused in the Al-Kasr mosque, not far from Bab Mnara.
This paper presents the results of survey missions carried out in recent years at the village of Bou Jlida. New epigraphic and archaeological documentation has been gathered to provide a better ...understanding of the limits of the ancient site and the distribution of the necropolises around the urban centre. The new epitaphs have substantially enriched the local onomastic repertoire, which will allow the question of the Romanisation of the population to be approached on a more solid basis. Systematic survey of the as yet undeveloped areas to the east and west of the village has also yielded a diverse ceramic assemblage that provides new insights on the chronology of the site.
An overview of the use of the term possessor in the Latin epigraphy of Africa and the discovery of a new territorial landmark a little to the north of Henchir Chaïeb, makes it possible to return to ...the question of the legal status of the lands administered from this estate centre (private or imperial). In addition, recent surveys have provided new archaeological data on the chronology of the occupation of the site. A toponymic connection with a sufetal city established in the same geographical area, the ciuitas Tapphugabensis, allows the development of the short name Tapp as Tapp(hugabensis).
Among several palmprint recognition methods proposed recently, coding-based approaches using multi-spectral palmprint images are attractive owing to their high recognition rates. Aiming to further ...improve the performance of these approaches, this paper presents a novel multi-spectral palmprint recognition approach based on oriented multiscale log-Gabor filters. The proposed method aims to enhance the recognition performances by proposing novel solutions at three stages of the recognition process. Inspired by the bitwise competitive coding, the feature extraction employs a multi-resolution log-Gabor filtering where the final feature map is composed of the winning codes of the lowest filters’ bank response. The matching process employs a bitwise Hamming distance and Kullback–Leibler divergence as novel metrics to enable an efficient capture of the intra- and inter-similarities between palmprint feature maps. Finally, the decision stage is carried pout using a fusion of the scores generated from different spectral bands to reduce overlapping. In addition, a fusion of the feature maps through two proposed novel feature fusion techniques to allow us to eliminate the inherent redundancy of the features of neighboring spectral bands is also proposed. The experimental results obtained using the multi-spectral palmprint database MS-PolyU have shown that the proposed method achieves high accuracy in mono-spectral and multi-spectral recognition performances for both verification and identification modes; and also outperforms the state-of-the-art methods.
To assess the frequency and disability caused by nonmotor fluctuations (NMF) in PD.
A structured questionnaire was administered to 50 patients with PD with motor fluctuations (MF), focused on 54 ...nonmotor symptoms classified in three subgroups: 26 dysautonomic, 21 cognitive and psychiatric, and seven pain/sensory NMF. The link between each NMF and the motor state was determined. Patients were asked to grade their disability from 0 (no disability) to 4 (maximum discomfort) and to specify which kind of fluctuation subgroup (motor or nonmotor) was the most incapacitating. A statistical analysis was performed to determine the frequency of each NMF and to determine whether the level of disability resulting from NMF could be correlated to the main characteristics of the population.
All patients had had at least one type of NMF, most of which were associated with the "off" state. Anxiety (66%), drenching sweats (64%), slowness of thinking (58%), fatigue (56%), and akathisia (54%) were the most frequent NMF. Some symptoms such as anxiety or dyspnea correlated with a greater level of disability. The total number of NMF was found to be correlated with the motor disability. Incapacity resulting from the dysautonomic fluctuations was also significantly correlated with levodopa treatment. Surprisingly, 28% of the patients stated that NMF involved a greater degree of disability than MF.
Nonmotor fluctuations are frequent and debilitating in PD.
The embedded zero-tree wavelet (EZW) coding algorithm is a very effective technique for low bitrate still image compression. In this paper, an improved EZW algorithm is proposed to achieve a high ...compression performance in terms of PSNR and bitrate for lossy and lossless image compression, respectively. To reduce the number of zerotrees, the scanning and symbol redundancy of the existing EZW; the proposed method is based on the use of a new significant symbol map which is represented in a more efficient way. Furthermore, we develop a new EZW-based schemes for achieving a scalable colour image coding by exploiting efficiently the interdependency of colour planes. Numerical results demonstrate a significant superiority of our scheme over the conventional EZW and other improved EZW schemes with respect to both objective and subjective criteria for lossy and lossless compression applications of greyscale and colour images.
Very few data are available on the long-term changes in the cognitive abilities of patients with loss of psychic self-activation syndrome (LPSAS). Here, we present a 25-year follow-up study on a case ...of LPSAS resulting from bilateral pallidal lesions caused by carbon monoxide intoxication. Typical signs of LPSAS were observed, showing no changes in severity, but Ganser syndrome (GS) gradually developed and worsened during the follow-up period. GS is generally assumed to be a psychogenic syndrome, but an organic etiology has been suspected by the authors of several case reports. Here, atypical features of GS plead against the independence of GS and LPSAS. DaTSCAN and brain 18FDG-PET were performed. Since left hippocampal hypometabolism has been previously described in patients with functional amnesia, it is possible that long periods of mental inactivity may have psychological consequences, but the atypical features of GS also suggest that an organic mechanism may be involved.
