Various synchrotron radiation-based spectroscopic and microscopic techniques are used to elucidate the room-temperature ferromagnetism of carbon-doped ZnO-nanowires (ZnO-C:NW) via a mild C
ion ...implantation method. The photoluminescence and magnetic hysteresis loops reveal that the implantation of C reduces the number of intrinsic surface defects and increases the saturated magnetization of ZnO-NW. The interstitial implanted C ions constitute the majority of defects in ZnO-C:NW as confirmed by the X-ray absorption spectroscopic studies. The X-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectra of O and C K-edge respectively indicate there is a reduction in the number of unpaired/dangling O 2p bonds in the surface region of ZnO-C:NW and the C 2p-derived states of the implanted C ions strongly affect the net spin polarization in the surface and bulk regions of ZnO-C:NW. Furthermore, these findings corroborate well with the first-principles calculations of C-implanted ZnO in surface and bulk regions, which highlight the stability of implanted C for the suppression and enhancement of the ferromagnetism of the ZnO-C:NW in the surface region and bulk phase, respectively.
The CDEX-1 experiment conducted a search of low-mass (< 10GeV/c super(2)) weakly interacting massive particles dark matter at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory using a p-type point-contact ...germanium detector with a fiducial mass of 915 g at a physics analysis threshold of 475 eVee. We report the hardware setup, detector characterization, data acquisition, and analysis procedures of this experiment. No excess of unidentified events is observed after the subtraction of the known background. Using 335.6 kg-days of data, exclusion constraints on the weakly interacting massive particle-nucleon spin-independent and spin-dependent couplings are derived.
Summary
Nucleos(t)ide analogues (NAs) have been shown to decrease the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) recurrence. This study evaluated whether high‐potency NAs (entecavir and tenofovir ...disoproxil fumarate TDF) reduce the risk of tumour recurrence more potently than low‐potency NAs after curative treatment of hepatitis B virus (HBV)‐related HCC. This study included 607 consecutive HBV‐related HCC patients treated with surgical resection or radiofrequency ablation. The patients were categorized into three groups according to antiviral treatment: group A (no antiviral; n = 261), group B (low‐potency NA; n = 90) and group C (high‐potency NA; n = 256). The primary end‐point was recurrence‐free survival (RFS). During the duration of follow‐up, the median RFS was 29.4, 25.1, and 88.2 months in groups A, B and C, respectively (P < .001, log‐rank test). The multivariate Cox analysis indicated that group C had a significantly longer RFS than both group A (adjusted hazard ratio HR = 0.39, P < .001) and group B (adjusted HR = 0.47, P < .001). When baseline characteristics were balanced using inverse probability weighting, group C still had a significantly longer RFS than group A (adjusted HR = 0.46, P < .001) and group B (adjusted HR = 0.59, P = .007). Group C had significantly lower risk of viral breakthrough than group B (HR = 0.19, P < .001). Viral breakthrough was an independent risk factor for shorter RFS among groups B and C (adjusted HR = 2.03, P = .007, time‐dependent Cox analysis). Antiviral agents with high genetic barrier to resistance (entecavir and TDF) reduced the risk of HCC recurrence compared with other antivirals and no antiviral treatment, especially in patients with high baseline viral load.
Using cold atoms to simulate strongly interacting quantum systems is an exciting frontier of physics. However, because atoms are nominally neutral point particles, this limits the types of ...interaction that can be produced. We propose to use the powerful new platform of cold atoms trapped near nanophotonic systems to extend these limits, enabling a novel quantum material in which atomic spin degrees of freedom, motion and photons strongly couple over long distances. In this system, an atom trapped near a photonic crystal seeds a localized, tunable cavity mode around the atomic position. We find that this effective cavity facilitates interactions with other atoms within the cavity length, in a way that can be made robust against realistic imperfections. Finally, we show that such phenomena should be accessible using one-dimensional photonic crystal waveguides in which coupling to atoms has already been experimentally demonstrated.
Biocompatibility of dentin bonding agents (DBA) and composite resin may affect the treatment outcome (e.g., healthy pulp, pulpal inflammation, pulp necrosis) after operative restoration. ...Bisphenol-glycidyl methacrylate (BisGMA) is one of the major monomers present in DBA and resin. Prior studies focused on salivary esterase for metabolism and degradation of resin monomers clinically. This study found that human dental pulp cells expressed mainly carboxylesterase-2 (CES2) and smaller amounts of CES1A1 and CES3 isoforms. Exposure to BisGMA stimulated CES isoforms expression of pulp cells, and this event was inhibited by catalase. Exogenous addition of porcine esterase prevented BisGMA- and DBA-induced cytotoxicity. Interestingly, inhibition of CES by bis(p-nitrophenyl) phosphate (BNPP) and CES2 by loperamide enhanced the cytotoxicity of BisGMA and DBA. Addition of porcine esterase or N-acetyl-l-cysteine prevented BisGMA-induced prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and PGF2α production. In contrast, addition of BNPP and loperamide, but not mevastatin, enhanced BisGMA-induced PGE2 and PGF2α production in dental pulp cells. These results suggest that BisGMA may induce the cytotoxicity and prostanoid production of pulp cells, leading to pulpal inflammation or necrosis via reactive oxygen species production. Expression of CES, especially CES2, in dental pulp cells can be an adaptive response to protect dental pulp against BisGMA-induced cytotoxicity and prostanoid release. Resin monomers are the main toxic components in DBA, and the ester group is crucial for monomer toxicity.
Galactic cosmic rays consist of protons, electrons and ions, most of which are believed to be accelerated to relativistic speeds in supernova remnants. All components of the cosmic rays show an ...intensity that decreases as a power law with increasing energy (for example as E-2.7). Electrons in particular lose energy rapidly through synchrotron and inverse Compton processes, resulting in a relatively short lifetime (about 105 years) and a rapidly falling intensity, which raises the possibility of seeing the contribution from individual nearby sources (less than one kiloparsec away). Here we report an excess of galactic cosmic-ray electrons at energies of ∼300-800 GeV, which indicates a nearby source of energetic electrons. Such a source could be an unseen astrophysical object (such as a pulsar or micro-quasar) that accelerates electrons to those energies, or the electrons could arise from the annihilation of dark matter particles (such as a Kaluza-Klein particle with a mass of about 620 GeV).

The most recent version of the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Clinical Practice Guidelines for the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of metastatic non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) ...was published in 2016. At the ESMO Asia Meeting in November 2017 it was decided by both ESMO and the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology (CSCO) to convene a special guidelines meeting immediately after the Chinese Thoracic Oncology Group Annual Meeting 2018, in Guangzhou, China. The aim was to adapt the ESMO 2016 guidelines to take into account the ethnic differences associated with the treatment of metastatic NSCLC cancer in Asian patients. These guidelines represent the consensus opinions reached by experts in the treatment of patients with metastatic NSCLC representing the oncological societies of China (CSCO), Japan (JSMO), Korea (KSMO), Malaysia (MOS), Singapore (SSO) and Taiwan (TOS). The voting was based on scientific evidence, and was independent of both the current treatment practices and the drug availability and reimbursement situations in the six participating Asian countries. During the review process, the updated ESMO 2018 Clinical Practice Guidelines for metastatic NSCLC were released and were also considered, during the final stages of the development of the Pan-Asian adapted Clinical Practice Guidelines.

efficacy of a new fungicidal agent, olorofim (formerly F901318), against scedosporiosis and lomentosporiosis in neutropenic animals. Cyclophosphamide-immunosuppressed CD-1 mice infected by Scedosporium apiospermum, Pseudallescheria boydii (Scedosporium boydii), and Lomentospora prolificans were treated by intraperitoneal administration of olorofim (15 mg/kg of body weight every 8 h for 9 days). The efficacy of olorofim treatment was assessed by the survival rate at 10 days postinfection, levels of serum (1-3)-β-d-glucan (BG), histopathology, and fungal burdens of kidneys 3 days postinfection. Olorofim therapy significantly improved survival compared to that of the untreated controls; 80%, 100%, and 100% of treated mice survived infection by Scedosporium apiospermum, Pseudallescheria boydii, and Lomentospora prolificans, respectively, while less than 20% of the control mice (phosphate-buffered saline PBS treated) survived at 10 days postinfection. In the olorofim-treated neutropenic CD-1 mice infected with any of the three species, serum BG levels were significantly suppressed and fungal DNA detected in the target organs was significantly lower than in controls. Furthermore, histopathology of kidneys revealed no or only a few lesions with hyphal elements in the olorofim-treated mice, while numerous fungal hyphae were present in control mice. These results indicate olorofim to be a promising therapeutic agent for systemic scedosporiosis/lomentosporiosis, devastating emerging fungal infections that are difficult to treat with currently available antifungals.
Clostridium innocuum can cause extraintestinal infection in patients with underlying diseases. The role of C. innocuum in antibiotic-associated diarrhoea (AAD) remains unknown.
Clinical information ...of 103 patients from whom C. innocuum was isolated was reviewed. We carried out cellular and animal experiments to examine the pathogenic potential of C. innocuum in AAD.
Eighty-eight per cent (91/103) of the 103 patients received antibiotics within 2 weeks of diarrhoea onset. Patients were further classified into two groups, severe colitis and diarrhoea, according to clinical severity level. The mortality rate was 13.6% (14/103) among the patients from whom C. innocuum was isolated. The lowest concentrations at which 90% of the isolates were inhibited for metronidazole and vancomycin were 0.5 and 16 mg/L, respectively. All isolates tested were susceptible to metronidazole but resistant to vancomycin. Nineteen randomly selected isolates (ten from severe colitis group, nine from diarrhoea group) were subjected to further in vitro cellular examinations. The level of cytotoxicity to Vero cells was significantly higher in isolates from the severe colitis group at both 24 and 48 hours after inoculation (24 and 48 hours, p 0.042 and 0.033, respectively). We observed apoptotic changes that subsequently led to cell death in C. innocuum–infected Vero cells. Tissue damages, necrotic changes and oedema were observed in the mouse ileal loop infected by C. innocuum.
Vancomycin-resistant C. innocuum may play a potential role as a causative agent of AAD. The clinical manifestations of AAD caused by C. innocuum were diarrhoea or severe colitis, including pseudomembranous colitis.
Intestinal tuberculosis and Crohn's disease are chronic inflammatory bowel disorders that are difficult to differentiate from one another. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic value of various ...colonoscopic findings in the differential diagnosis between intestinal tuberculosis and Crohn's disease.
Colonoscopic findings on initial work-up were prospectively recorded in patients with an initial diagnosis of either intestinal tuberculosis or Crohn's disease. These findings were analyzed after a final diagnosis of intestinal tuberculosis (n = 44) or Crohn's disease (n = 44) had been made after follow-up.
Four parameters (anorectal lesions, longitudinal ulcers, aphthous ulcers, and cobblestone appearance) were significantly more common in patients with Crohn's disease than in patients with intestinal tuberculosis. Four other parameters (involvement of fewer than four segments, a patulous ileocecal valve, transverse ulcers, and scars or pseudopolyps) were observed more frequently in patients with intestinal tuberculosis than in patients with Crohn's disease. We hypothesized that a diagnosis of Crohn's disease could be made when the number of parameters characteristic of Crohn's disease was higher than the number of parameters characteristic of intestinal tuberculosis, and vice versa. Making these assumptions, we calculated that the diagnosis of either intestinal tuberculosis or Crohn's disease would have been made made correctly in 77 of our 88 patients (87.5 %), incorrectly in seven patients (8.0 %), and would not have been made in four patients (4.5 %).
A systematic analysis of colonoscopic findings is very useful in the differential diagnosis between intestinal tuberculosis and Crohn's disease.
