Prior public administration research emphasises the importance of environmental protection and sustainability, but most studies have focused on governmental actions and public employees' ...pro-environmental behaviours (PEBs). Little is known about why and how citizens perform PEBs in their public or private spheres. To fill the research gap, we draw from related literature and develop a conceptual model explaining how citizens' perceptions of public values, government, and the environment impact citizens' PEBs in public and private spheres. By analysing a Taiwan Social Change Survey data,we find that the willingness to sacrifice for the environment shows a significant mediating effect on the relationships between citizens' PEBs and most public values, government, and environmental determinants. The results also demonstrate how citizens' PEBs in the public sphere differ from those in the private sphere. Implications for theory and practice are addressed.
Osteoporosis has been associated with several disorders; however, there have been only a limited number of reports on heroin-induced osteoporosis. We report a rare case presented with bilateral ...femoral neck insufficiency fractures without trauma history, caused by heroin-induced osteoporosis. We collect sufficient clinical data and further shed light on the potential mechanism of how heroin affects bone formation and decreases bone density.
A 55-year-old male patient with normal body mass index (BMI) suffered from bilateral hips pain gradually without trauma history. He had intravenous heroin addiction for more than 30 years. Radiography revealed bilateral femoral neck insufficiency fractures. Laboratory tests showed elevated alkaline phosphatase levels (365 U/L) and decreased inorganic phosphate (1.7 mg/dL), calcium (8.3 mg/dL), 25-(OH)D3 (20.3 ng/ml) and testosterone levels (2.12 ng/ml). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed increased signals on STIR images over the sacral ala and bilateral proximal femur, and multiple band-like lesions at the vertebrae of the thoracic and lumbar spine. Bone densitometry revealed osteoporosis with a T score of minus 4.0. The screen for urine morphine was positive (> 1000 ng/ml). Through assessment of the patient, the diagnosis was insufficiency fractures of bilateral femoral neck caused by opioid-induced osteoporosis. After hemiarthroplasty, regular medication with vitamin D3 and calcium, and detoxification treatment, and the patient recovered well after 6 months of follow-up.
The aim of this report is to highlight the laboratory and radiology findings in a case of osteoporosis caused by opioid addiction and discuss the potential pathway by which osteoporosis is induced by opioids. When an unusual osteoporosis presents with insufficiency fractures, heroin-induced osteoporosis should be considered.

In this study, we aimed to develop a new ligand-based virtual screening approach using an effective shape-overlapping procedure and a more robust scoring function (denoted by the HWZ score for ...convenience). The HWZ score-based virtual screening approach was tested against the compounds for 40 protein targets available in the Database of Useful Decoys (DUD; dud.docking.org/jahn/), and the virtual screening performance was evaluated in terms of the area under the receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC), enrichment factor (EF), and hit rate (HR), demonstrating an improved overall performance compared to other popularly used approaches examined. In particular, the HWZ score-based virtual screening led to an average AUC value of 0.84 ± 0.02 (95% confidence interval) for the 40 targets. The average HR values at the top 1% and 10% of the active compounds for the 40 targets were 46.3% ± 6.7% and 59.2% ± 4.7%, respectively. In addition, the performance of the HWZ score-based virtual screening approach is less sensitive to the choice of the target.
In a recent remarkable experiment Sci. Adv. 2, e1501531 (2016), a 3-qubit quantum Fredkin (i.e., controlled-SWAP) gate was demonstrated by using linear optics. Here we propose a simple experimental ...scheme by utilizing the dispersive interaction in superconducting quantum circuit to implement a hybrid Fredkin gate with a superconducting flux qubit as the control qubit and two separated quantum memories as the target qudits. The quantum memories considered here are prepared by the superconducting coplanar waveguide resonators or nitrogen-vacancy center ensembles. In particular, it is shown that this Fredkin gate can be realized using a single-step operation and more importantly, each target qudit can be in an arbitrary state with arbitrary degrees of freedom. Furthermore, we show that this experimental scheme has many potential applications in quantum computation and quantum information processing such as generating arbitrary entangled states (discrete-variable states or continuous-variable states) of the two memories, measuring the fidelity and the entanglement between the two memories. With state-of-the-art circuit QED technology, the numerical simulation is performed to demonstrate that two-memory NOON states, entangled coherent states, and entangled cat states can be efficiently synthesized.
Obesity is associated with metabolic endotoxemia, reactive oxygen species (ROS), chronic inflammation, and obese kidney fibrosis. Although the fat-intestine-kidney axis has been documented, the ...pathomechanism and therapeutic targets of obese kidney fibrosis remain unelucidated. To mimic obese humans with metabolic endotoxemia, high-fat-diet-fed mice (HF group) were injected with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to yield the obese kidney fibrosis-metabolic endotoxemia mouse model (HL group). Therapeutic effects of ROS, cytosolic phospholipases A2 (cPLA2) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors were analyzed with a quantitative comparison of immunohistochemistry stains and morphometric approach in the tubulointerstitium of different groups. Compared with basal and HF groups, the HL group exhibited the most prominent obese kidney fibrosis, tubular epithelial lipid vacuoles, and lymphocyte infiltration in the tubulointerstitium. Furthermore, inhibitors of nonspecific ROS, cPLA2 and COX-2 ameliorated the above renal damages. Notably, the ROS-inhibitor-treated group ameliorated not only oxidative injury but also the expression of cPLA2 and COX-2, indicating that ROS functions as the upstream signaling molecule in the inflammatory cascade of obese kidney fibrosis. ROS acts as a key messenger in the signaling transduction of obese kidney fibrosis, activating downstream cPLA2 and COX-2. The given antioxidant treatment ameliorates obese kidney fibrosis resulting from a combined high-fat diet and LPS-ROS could serve as a potential therapeutic target of obese kidney fibrosis with metabolic endotoxemia.
Germanium (Ge)‐based devices are recognized as one of the most promising next‐generation technologies for extending Moore's law. However, one of the critical issues is Fermi‐level pinning (FLP) at ...the metal/n‐Ge interface, and the resulting large contact resistance seriously degrades their performance. The insertion of a thin layer is one main technique for FLP modulation; however, the contact resistance is still limited by the remaining barrier height and the resistance induced by the insertion layer. In addition, the proposed depinning mechanisms are also controversial. Here, the authors report a wafer‐scale carbon nanotube (CNT) insertion method to alleviate FLP. The inserted conductive film reduces the effective Schottky barrier height without inducing a large resistance, leading to ohmic contact and the smallest contact resistance between a metal and a lightly doped n‐Ge. These devices also indicate that the metal‐induced gap states mechanism is responsible for the pinning. Based on the proposed technology, a wafer‐scale planar diode array is fabricated at room temperature without using the traditional ion‐implantation and annealing technology, achieving an on‐to‐off current ratio of 4.59 × 104. This work provides a new way of FLP modulation that helps to improve device performance with new materials.

The early life of terrestrial seed plants often starts under the soil in subterranean darkness. Over time and through adaptation, plants have evolved an elaborate etiolation process that enables ...seedlings to emerge from soil and acquire autotrophic ability. This process, however, requires seedlings to be able to sense the soil condition and relay this information accordingly to modulate both the seedlings' growth and the formation of photosynthetic apparatus. The mechanism by which soil overlay drives morphogenetic changes in plants, however, remains poorly understood, particularly with regard to the means by which the cellular processes of different organs are coordinated in response to disparate soil conditions. Here, we illustrate that the soil overlay quantitatively activates seedlings' ethylene production, and an EIN3/EIN3-like 1—dependent ethylene-response cascade is required for seedlings to successfully emerge from the soil. Under soil, an ERF1 pathway is activated in the hypocotyl to slow down cell elongation, whereas a PIF3 pathway is activated in the cotyledon to control the preassembly of photosynthetic machinery. Moreover, this latter PIF3 pathway appears to be coupled to the ERF1-regulated upward-growth rate. The coupling of these two pathways facilitates the synchronized progression of etioplast maturation and hypocotyl growth, which, in turn, ultimately enables seedlings to maintain the amount of protochlorophyllide required for rapid acquisition of photoautotrophic capacity without suffering from photooxidative damage during the dark-to-light transition. Our findings illustrate the existence of a genetic signaling pathway driving soil-induced plant morphogenesis and define the specific role of ethylene in orchestrating organ-specific soil responses in Arabidopsis seedlings.
Management of pediatric septic coxarthritis and osteomyelitis of the femur is challenging, and the sequelae of multiplanar hip joint deformity with instability are difficult to reconstruct. The ...inadequacy of a suitable device for fixing small bones during pediatric osteotomy is a hindrance to the correction of subluxated hip joints and deformed femurs in children. Two-dimensional axial images and three-dimensional (3D) virtual models representing the patient’s individual anatomy are usually reserved for more complex cases of limb deformity. 3D printing technology can be used for preoperative planning of complex pediatric orthopedic surgery. However, there is a paucity of literature reports regarding the application of 3D-printed bone models for pediatric post-osteomyelitis deformity. We herein present a case of a 4-year-old boy who underwent treatment for post-osteomyelitis deformity. We performed corrective surgery with Pemberton osteotomy of the right hip, multilevel varus derotation osteotomy of the right femur, and immobilization with a hip spica cast. A 3D-printed bone model of this patient was used to simulate the surgery, determine the proper osteotomy sites, and choose the appropriate implant for the osteotomized bone. A satisfactory clinical outcome was achieved.
The volar locking plate has been widely used for unstable distal radius fractures to provide early recovery of wrist function. Volar plate prominence to the watershed line has been reported to be ...related to flexor tendon irritation, and avoid implant prominence in this area was suggested. On the other hand, marginal distal radius fracture patterns required the plate to cross the watershed line, making conflict over plate positioning on marginal distal radius fractures. This study compared functional outcomes in patients with marginal distal radius fractures treated with two different implants.
A retrospective study was conducted, all patients who received a Synthes 2.4 mm LCP or an Acumed Acu-Loc VLP between January 2015 and December 2018 were reviewed. The marginal distal radius fracture pattern was the most distal horizontal fracture line within 10 mm of the lunate fossa's joint line. The primary outcomes including patient-reported pain scores, range of motion, and grip strength were assessed. Secondary outcomes included patient-based subjective satisfaction scores of the injured wrist and hand function. The Mayo Wrist Score and the requirement for a secondary procedure related to hardware complications were also recorded.
Forty-two patients met our inclusion criteria. Twenty-one patients were treated with the Synthes 2.4 mm LCP, and 21 patients with the Acumed Acu-Loc VLP. The primary outcome revealed that post-operative range of motion (P = 0.016) and grip strengths (P = 0.014) were significantly improved in the Acu-Loc VLP group. The MAYO wrist score in the Acu-Loc VLP group was also significantly better (P = 0.006).
Despite advances in implant designs, flexor tendon irritation or rupture is still a complication following distal radius's volar plating. We believe the Acumed Acu-Loc VLP design provided better functional outcomes than the Synthes 2.4 mm LCP if appropriately and carefully placed into its designed-for position. This positioning results in promising patient satisfaction when treating marginal distal radius fractures.

The wide-awake local anesthesia no tourniquet (WALANT) technique is applied during various hand surgeries. We investigated the perioperative variables and clinical outcomes of open reduction and ...internal fixation (ORIF) for distal radius fractures under WALANT.
From January 2015 to January 2017, 60 patients with distal radius fractures were treated, and 24 patients (40% of all) were treated with either a volar or a dorsal plate via WALANT procedure. Of these 24 patients, 21 radius fractures were fixed with a volar plate, and the other 3 were fixed with a dorsal plate. Radiographs; range of motions; visual analog scale (VAS); quick disabilities of the arm, shoulder, and hand (Quick DASH) questionnaire; and time to union were evaluated.
One of the 24 patients could not tolerate the WALANT procedure and was reported as a failed attempt at WALANT. In the cohort, 23 patients successfully received distal radius ORIF under WALANT procedure. The average age is 60.9 (range, 20-88) years. The average operation time was 64.3 (range, 45-85) minutes, the average blood loss was 18.9 (range, 5-30) ml, and the average of duration of hospitalization is 1.8 (range, 1-6) days. The average postoperative day one VAS was 1.6 (range, 1-3). The average time of union was 20.7 (range, 15-32) weeks. The mean follow-up period was 15.1 (range, 12-24) months. Functional 1-year postoperative outcomes revealed an average Quick DASH score of 7.60 (range, 4.5-13.6) and an average wrist flexion and extension of 69.6° (range, 55-80°) and 57.4° (range, 45-70°). There was no wound infection, neurovascular injury, or other major complication noted.
WALANT for distal radius fracture ORIF is a method to control blood loss by the effects of local anesthesia mixed with hemostatic agents. Without a tourniquet, the procedure prevents discomfort caused by tourniquet pain. Without sedation, patients could perform the active range of motion of the injured wrist to check if there is impingement of implants. It eliminates the need of numerous preoperative examinations, postoperative anesthesia recovery room care, and side effects of the sedation. However, patients who are not amenable to the awake procedure are contraindications.
