Background: Considering the chronic immunosuppression in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) patients, it is necessary to evaluate the course of COVID-19 in these patients. Studies have shown various ...results in adult IBD patients. This study aimed to find out the course of this infection in pediatric IBD patients. Methods: This was a systematic review study according to the PRISMA 2020 guideline. International databases including Scopus, PubMed, and the Web of Science were searched with a combination of “COVID-19” AND “IBD” or synonyms until October 16, 2021. Studies that have reported the outcomes of COVID-19 infection in patients less than 19 years of age were selected. Name of author, country, study duration and type, IBD type and drugs, and COVID-19 outcomes were extracted. Results: From the initially retrieved 2215 articles, finally 16 articles were eligible. Data from 1040 pediatric IBD patients were reported. Twenty-four patients were hospitalized, 5 developed patients multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, and others had a mild disease course and were outpatient. Steroid use, severe IBD activity, and comorbidities were shown to increase risk of hospitalization and disease severity. Conclusions: COVID-19 is a benign and self-limited disease in pediatric IBD patients. Comorbidities, steroid use, and severe IBD activity affect the outcomes.
Social capital is a multi-faceted phenomenon in social sciences that massively affects many social fields. It can be a helpful factor in promoting health. Among the groups with high burnout, nurses ...have always shown higher levels of burnout. Studies have revealed that social capital can be an important factor affecting burnout. This study aimed to determine the extent of the effect of social capital on burnout in nurses of a trauma referral teaching hospital in Rasht. This was a descriptive correlational study conducted on 214 nurses of a trauma referral teaching hospital. Maslach standard questionnaire and the social capital questionnaire devised by Boyas and colleagues were used. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, and linear regression analysis to determine the extent of the effect of social capital on burnout. The study showed an inverse association between social capital and burnout. The intensity of the relationship was -0.451 (P<0.0001). Also, the linear regression model of social capital on burnout variable showed that the regression coefficient of social capital equaled -0.34. The determination coefficient of this regression model indicated that social capital explained 20% of burnout changes. The results showed high burnout in emotional exhaustion dimension and an inverse association between social capital and burnout. Thus, attempts should be made to promote social capital dimensions among nurses. Given the inevitability of job stress in a nursing environment, and managers should plan on improving the working conditions and training techniques to deal with such stress.
Background: Trichostrongylus is an intestinal parasite that is highly prevalent in humans and livestock worldwide. There is limited information about the prevalence and epidemiology of ...Trichostrongylus species among the infected livestock in Mazandaran Province, northern Iran. This study aimed to identify Trichostrongylus spp. among small ruminants using morphometric and molecular methods. Materials and Methods: Small intestinal organs of sheep and goats, slaughtered in Mazandaran Province, were examined for infectivity with Trichostrongylus parasites. Primary species identification was conducted based on the morphological characterization of the male worms. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) II regions of the ribosomal DNA of the worm tissues were amplified using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay and then the product was subjected to sequencing. Subsequently, the PCR products of the ITS II region were subjected to digestion by HinfI and DraI restriction enzymes using the PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP). Results: Of 180 samples, 98 (54.44%) were confirmed positive for Trichostrongylus based on the conventional PCR. The digestion of the PCR products with HinfI and DraI facilitated the identification of three Trichostrongylus species, namely Trichostrongylus colubriformis (35%, 90.81%), Trichostrongylus axei (4%, 4.08%), and Trichostrongylus vitrinus (5%, 5.1%). Both morphometric and RFLP techniques resulted in the differentiation of the three Trichostrongylus species. Conclusion: The present study was the 1st attempt in the last 30 years for the identification of Trichostrongylus species in small ruminants in Mazandaran Province. The findings of this study can be helpful for epidemiological and ecological studies, the establishment of effective control programs, and the management of gastrointestinal parasites in Mazandaran Province.
The use of 3D (3-Dimensional) culture systems supported cell-to-cell and cell-to-extracellular matrix (ECM) interactions, proliferation, and differentiation of SSCs (Spermatogonial stem cells). The ...potential advantages of ECM-based scaffolds for in vitro spermatogenesis have been indicated in human and animal experiments. Furthermore, the strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of melatonin have improved in vitro manipulation of human SSCs in culture conditions.
SSCs were isolated from the testis of three dead-brain patients and then propagated for four weeks. The characterization of SSC colonies was done using real-time PCR (Polymerase chain reaction), ICC (Immunocytochemistry), and xenotransplantation to mice model. Decellularization of the human testis was performed using 0.3% sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) solution and 1% Triton X-100. Also, various characterizations of DTM (Decellularized testicular matrix ) were carried out using histological staining and DNA content analysis. The optimum dose of melatonin was selected by MTT (Methyl thiazol tetrazolium). SSCs were cultured in 4 groups: control, melatonin, ECM, and ECM-melatonin in a differentiation medium for four weeks. The expression of differentiation genes was evaluated by real-time polymerase chain reaction. In addition, the viability of cultured cells was assessed by MTT assay.
The results of ICC and real-time PCR showed the expression of undifferentiated SSC markers (PLZF and GRFA1) in SSC colonies following the 2D culture of isolated SSCs. The presence of testicular ECM components after different staining methods; and the reduction of DNA content confirmed the proper decellularization process. Germ cell apoptosis significantly decreased in melatonin and ECM groups, and the higher viability of SSCs was seen in the ECM-melatonin group. The relative expression of GFRA1 and PRM2 decreased and increased in ECM and ECM-melatonin groups, respectively.
Our study showed that the addition of melatonin to the human naturally-derived ECM scaffold could provide a suitable platform for inducing the differentiation and preserving the viability of SSCs.
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an ongoing pandemic, reported to cause asymptomatic to severe disease and eventually death. Multi-organ failure and death in patients with severe COVID-19 is ...associated with increased release of pro-inflammatory cytokines into the blood stream. Renal impairment is reported in a significant proportion of COVID-19 patients and is associated with high mortality. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is multifactorial and involving overlapping pathogenic mechanisms. This review updates the reader of recent publications dealing with the mechanisms underlying AKI in patients with COVID-19. A full understanding of all the possible ways in which the system plays its role in AKI is still a matter of research. Further studies are warranted to better understand the causes of AKI in COVID-19 patients.
Background & aim: High-risk pregnancies increase the risk of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) admission in mothers and their newborns. In this study, we aimed to ...identify the association between the recurrence of high-risk pregnancy and mothers’ previous experience of having an infant admitted to NICU. Methods:We performed a cohort, retrospective study to compare subsequent pregnancy outcomes among 232 control subjects and 200 female cases with a previous experience of having a newborn requiring NICU admission due to intrauterine growth retardation, preeclampsia, preterm birth, premature rupture of membranes, and asphyxia. The information about the prevalence of subsequent high-risk pregnancies was gathered via phone calls. Results: As the results indicated, heparin, progesterone, and aspirin were more frequently administered in the case group during subsequent pregnancies, compared to the control group (P
Cytogenetic, morphometry and RAPD analyses were performed on trees of wild and cultivated olives in Iran. For morphometric analysis 20 morphological characters based on International Olive Council ...descriptors, including 6 quantitative and 14 qualitative characters, were studied. Clustering and ordination plots showed the presence of 2 wild olive forms (subspecies) in Iran which were identified as Olea europaea subsp. cuspidata and Olea europaea subsp. ferruginae. Cytogenetic study of O. europaea subsp. cuspidata showed presence of 2n=46 chromosome number and normal bivalent formation as well as chromosome segregation. Wild olives were separated from cultivated cultivars in clustering and ordination plots both in morphological and cytogenetical characteristics studied. RAPD analysis showed genetic differences of the 2 subspecies identified, revealing the occurrence of specific loci in each subsp. O. europaea subsp. cuspidata showed a relatively higher level of intra-population genetic diversity compared to that of O. europaea subsp. ferruginae. This is the first report of wild olives in Iran.
The aim of the present study was to express and evaluate a previously cloned lipase gene. In this study, the cloned gene was subcloned in the pET15b
