To explore household transmissibility of SARS-CoV-2 in children in new-variants dominating periods.
Through retrieval in PubMed and Embase, studies were included in two parts: meta-analysis of the household secondary attack rate (SAR) and case analysis of household pediatric infections.
A total of 95 articles were included: 48 for meta-analysis and 47 for case analysis. Pediatric COVID-19 only comprised a minority of the household transmission. The total pooled household SAR of child index cases and contacts were 0.20 (95% confidence interval CI: 0.15–0.26) and 0.24 (95% CI: 0.18–0.30). Lower household transmissibility was reported in both child index cases and contacts than in adults (relative risk RR = 0.64, 95% CI: 0.50–0.81; RR = 0.74, 95% CI: 0.64–0.85). Younger children were as susceptible as the older children (RR = 0.89, 95% CI: 0.72–1.10). Through subgroup analyses of different variants and periods, increased household SAR was observed in children (Wild: 0.20; Alpha: 0.42; Delta: 0.35; Omicron: 0.56), and no significant difference was found in household SAR between children and adults when new variants dominated.
Although children were found not to be dominant in the household transmission, their transmissibility of SARS-CoV-2 appeared to be on the rise as new variants emerged.
COVID-19 vaccination for children is crucial to achieve herd immunity. This is the first systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate parents' and guardians' willingness to vaccinate their ...children against COVID-19 and identify the determinants of vaccination intention. Systematic research was performed on the two databases (PubMed and EMBASE) from inception to 6 November 2021. Acceptance rates were pooled by use of a random-effects model and all predictors of vaccine acceptance were identified according to the health belief model (HBM) framework. This analysis was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42021292326) and reported in compliance with the PRISMA guidelines. Of 452 identified records, 29 eligible studies were included (N = 68,327 participants). The estimated worldwide vaccination acceptance rate was 61.40% (95% CI: 53.56-68.69%, I
= 99.3%), ranging from 21.6% to 91.4% across countries and regions. In the determinant assessment, the age of parents and guardians, access to scientific information and recommendations, routine and influenza vaccination behavior, and the willingness of parents and guardians to vaccinate themselves were potentially significant predictors of the vaccination willingness. Given the limited quality and quantity of included articles, future studies with a rigorous design will be necessary for the confirmation of our findings.
Clock synchronization is one of the popular research topics in Distributed Measurement and Control Systems (DMCSs). In most industrial fields, such as Smart Grid and Flight Test, the highest ...requirement for synchronization accuracy is 1 μs. IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol-2008 (PTPv2) can theoretically achieve sub-microsecond accuracy, but it relies on the assumption that the forward and backward delays of PTP packets are symmetrical. In practice, PTP packets will experience random queue delays in switches, making the above assumption challenging to satisfy and causing poor synchronization accuracy. Although using switches supporting the Transparent Clock (TC) can improve synchronization accuracy, these dedicated switches are generally expensive. This paper designs a PTP clock servo for compensating Queue-Induced Delay Asymmetry (QIDA), which can be implemented based on ordinary switches. Its main algorithm comprises a minimum window filter with drift compensation and a fuzzy proportional-integral (PI) controller. We construct a low-cost hardware platform (the cost of each node is within USD 10) to test the performance of the clock servo. In a 100 Mbps network with background (BG) traffic of less than 70 Mbps, the maximum absolute time error (max |TE|) does not exceed 0.35 μs, and the convergence time is about half a minute. The accuracy is improved hundreds of times compared with other existing clock servos.
In this paper, on one hand, the time-varying characteristics of the heat source and thermal boundary conditions of the high-speed spindle system were analyzed considering the thermal-structural ...coupling effect. And a transient bearing temperature field prediction method combining the thermal network method and finite element method was proposed. Furthermore, the relationships between time step, calculation efficiency and calculation results were analyzed. On the other hand, a online real-time monitoring system of the transient temperature of the cylindrical roller bearing inner ring for maximum speed of 13,000 r/min was designed and implemented using fibre optic sensing technology. Comparing with the conventional static thermal analysis results, it is verified that the simulation method proposed in this paper has higher accuracy. This paper provides a new approach for analysing and testing the thermal characteristics of high-speed spindle system.
Long-term visualization of the dynamic interactions between intracellular structures throughout the three-dimensional space of whole live cells is essential to better understand their functions, but ...this task remains challenging due to the limitations of existing three-dimensional fluorescence microscopy techniques, such as an insufficient axial resolution, low volumetric imaging rate and photobleaching. Here, we present the combination of a progressive deep-learning super-resolution strategy with a double-ring-modulated selective plane illumination microscopy design capable of visualizing the dynamics of intracellular structures in live cells for hours at an isotropic spatial resolution of roughly 100 nm in three dimensions at speeds up to roughly 17 Hz. Using this approach, we reveal the complex spatial relationships and interactions between endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and mitochondria throughout live cells, providing new insights into ER-mediated mitochondrial division. We also examined the motion of Drp1 oligomers involved in mitochondrial fission and revealed the dynamic interactions between Drp1 and mitochondria in three dimensions.
Noise-induced cochlear synaptopathy (CS) is defined as a permanent loss of synapses in the auditory nerve pathway following noise exposure. Several studies using auditory brainstem response (ABR) ...have indicated the presence of CS and increased central gain in tinnitus patients with normal hearing thresholds (TNHT), but the results were inconsistent. This meta-analysis aimed to review the evidence of CS and its pathological changes in the central auditory system in TNHT. Published studies using ABR to study TNHT were reviewed. PubMed, EMBASE, and Scopus databases were selected to search for relevant literature. Studies (489) were retrieved, and 11 were included for meta-analysis. The results supported significantly reduced wave I amplitude in TNHT, whereas the alternations in wave V amplitude were inconsistent among the studies. Consistently increased V/I ratio indicated noise-induced central gain enhancement. The results indicated the evidence of noise-induced cochlear synaptopathy in tinnitus patients with normal hearing. However, inconsistent changes in wave V amplitude may be explained by that the failure of central gain that triggers the pathological neural changes in the central auditory system and/or that increased central gain may be necessary to generate tinnitus but not to maintain tinnitus.
The present study aimed to optimize the process for extracting cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) from sugarcane bagasse through ultrasonic-assisted sulfuric acid hydrolysis and its subsequent ...modification with L-malic acid and silane coupling agent KH-550. The effects of the different modification methods and the order of modification on the structures and properties of bagasse CNCs were explored. The results indicated that the optimal process conditions were achieved at an acid-digestion temperature of 50 °C, a reaction time of 70 min, an ultrasonic power of 250 W, and a volume fraction of 55%. The modified CNCs were analyzed using infrared spectral, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric techniques, which revealed that L-malic acid was attached to the hydroxyl group on the CNCs via ester bond formations, and the silane coupling agent KH-550 was adsorbed effectively on the CNCs' surfaces. Moreover, it was observed that the modification of the CNCs by L-malic acid and the KH-550 silane coupling agent occurred only on the surface, and the esterification-crosslinking modification method provided the best thermal stability. The performance of self-made CNC was found to be superior to that of purchased CNC based on the transmission electron microscopy analysis. Furthermore, the modified esterified-crosslinked CNCs exhibited the best structure and performance, thereby offering a potential avenue for the high-value utilization of sugarcane bagasse, a byproduct of sugarcane sugar production, and the expansion of the comprehensive utilization of sugarcane bagasse.
Currently, Arctic sea ice thickness (SIT) data with extensive spatiotemporal coverage primarily comes from satellite observations, including CryoSat-2, Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS), and ...the Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2). The studies of the intercomparison and evaluation of multi-source satellite products in recent years are limited. In this study, three latest version products of ICESat-2, CryoSat-2, and CS2SMOS (a merged product of CryoSat-2 and SMOS) were examined from October to April, between 2018 and 2022. Three types of observation including airborne data from the Operation IceBridge (OIB) and IceBird, and in situ data from Beaufort Gyre Exploration Project (BGEP) are selected as the reference in the evaluation. The intercomparison results show that the mean SIT is generally largest in ICESat-2, second largest in CryoSat-2, and smallest in CS2SMOS. The SIT in CryoSat-2 is closer to the SIT in ICESat-2. The thickness displayed by the three satellite products starts to increase at different freezing months, varying between October and November. The three satellite products demonstrated the strongest agreements in SIT in the Beaufort Sea and Central Arctic regions, and exhibited the most distinct differences in the Barents Sea. In the evaluation with OIB data, three satellite-derived SIT were generally underestimated and CS2SMOS demonstrates the closest match. The evaluation using IceBird data indicates an underestimation for all satellites, with CryoSat-2 showing the best agreement. In the assessment with BGEP data, ICESat-2 displayed a more pronounced degree of overestimation or underestimation compared to the other two satellites, and CS2SMOS exhibited the optimal agreement. Based on the comprehensive consideration, CS2SMOS demonstrated the best performance with the airborne and in situ observational data, followed by CryoSat-2 and ICESat-2. The intercomparison and evaluation results of satellite products can contribute to a further understanding of the accuracies and uncertainties of the latest version SIT retrieval and the appropriate selection and utilization of satellite products.
Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) fruit size/shape (FS) is an important yield and quality trait that is quantitatively inherited. Many quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for fruit size/shape have been ...identified, but very few have been fine-mapped or cloned. In this study, through marker-assisted foreground and background selections, we developed near-isogenic lines (NILs) for a major-effect fruit size/shape QTL FS5.2 in cucumber. Morphological and microscopic characterization of NILs suggests that the allele of fs5.2 from the semi-wild Xishuangbanna (XIS) cucumber (C. s. var. xishuangbannesis) reduces fruit elongation but promotes radial growth resulting in shorter but wider fruit, which seems to be due to reduced cell length, but increased cellular layers. Consistent with this, the NIL carrying the homozygous XIS allele (fs5.2) had lower auxin/IAA contents in both the ovary and the developing fruit. Fine genetic mapping with NIL-derived segregating populations placed FS5.2 into a 95.5 kb region with 15 predicted genes, and a homolog of the Arabidopsis CRABS CLAW (CsCRC) appeared to be the most possible candidate for FS5.2. Transcriptome profiling of NIL fruits at anthesis identified differentially expressed genes enriched in the auxin biosynthesis and signaling pathways, as well as genes involved in cell cycle, division, and cell wall processes. We conclude that the major-effect QTL FS5.2 controls cucumber fruit size/shape through regulating auxin-mediated cell division and expansion for the lateral and longitudinal fruit growth, respectively. The gibberellic acid (GA) signaling pathway also plays a role in FS5.2-mediated fruit elongation.
The challenge of mitigating the decline in both yield and fruit quality due to the intrusion of powdery mildew (PM) fungus looms as a pivotal concern in the domain of bitter melon cultivation. Yet, ...the intricate mechanisms that underlie resistance against this pathogen remain inscrutable for the vast majority of bitter melon variants. In this inquiry, we delve deeply into the intricate spectrum of physiological variations and transcriptomic fluctuations intrinsic to the PM-resistant strain identified as ‘04-17-4’ (R), drawing a sharp contrast with the PM-susceptible counterpart, designated as ‘25-15’ (S), throughout the encounter with the pathogenic agent Podosphaera xanthii. In the face of the challenge presented by P. xanthii, the robust cultivar displays an extraordinary capacity to prolong the initiation of the pathogen’s primary growth stage. The comprehensive exploration culminates in the discernment of 6635 and 6954 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in R and S strains, respectively. Clarification through the lens of enrichment analyses reveals a prevalence of enriched DEGs in pathways interconnected with phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, the interaction of plants with pathogens, and the signaling of plant hormones. Significantly, in the scope of the R variant, DEGs implicated in the pathways of plant-pathogen interaction phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, encompassing components such as calcium-binding proteins, calmodulin, and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, conspicuously exhibit an escalated tendency upon the encounter with P. xanthii infection. Simultaneously, the genes governing the synthesis and transduction of SA undergo a marked surge in activation, while their counterparts in the JA signaling pathway experience inhibition following infection. These observations underscore the pivotal role played by SA/JA signaling cascades in choreographing the mechanism of resistance against P. xanthii in the R variant. Moreover, the recognition of 40 P. xanthii-inducible genes, encompassing elements such as pathogenesis-related proteins, calmodulin, WRKY transcription factors, and Downy mildew resistant 6, assumes pronounced significance as they emerge as pivotal contenders in the domain of disease control. The zenith of this study harmonizes multiple analytical paradigms, thus capturing latent molecular participants and yielding seminal resources crucial for the advancement of PM-resistant bitter melon cultivars.
