GWAF, Genome-Wide Association analyses with Family, is an R package designed for GWAF. It implements association tests between a batch of genotyped or imputed single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) ...and a binary or continuous trait with user specified genetic model, and generates informative results from the analyses. In addition, GWAF provides functions to visualize results. We evaluated GWAF using a simulated continuous trait and a binary trait dichotomized from the simulated continuous trait with real genotype data from the Framingham Heart Study's SNP Health Association Resource project. Background: Vascularized submental lymph node (VSLN) transfer is an emerging approach for extremity lymphedema. This study investigated the long‐term outcome and venous complications of VSLN for ...unilateral lower extremity lymphedema.
Methods: Between 2010 and 2018, patients who underwent VSLN for unilateral lower extremity lymphedema were retrospectively evaluated. Patient demographics, operative records, complications, circumferential improvement, and episodes of cellulitis were analyzed. Further comparisons were performed between different types, numbers, and techniques of venous anastomoses.
Results: A total of 75 VSLNs in 70 patients survived, giving a 100% success rate. Six flaps (8%) had venous complications (VC group) and 69 flaps (92%) did not (No‐VC group). There were no statistical differences in types, numbers, and techniques of anastomoses between two groups (P = .65, 1, and .56, respectively). At a mean follow‐up of 32.0 ± 23.0 months, mean circumferential improvement and episodes of cellulitis between two groups did not statistically differ significantly (P = .31 and .09, respectively).
Conclusions: VSLN is an effective treatment for lower extremity lymphedema. The types, numbers of veins, and techniques of venous anastomoses did not statistically affect the venous complication rates. Functional outcomes of the VSLNs were not compromised if venous complications were salvaged promptly.
Technology innovation in the tourism industry serves as a vehicle to meet the increasing need for remarkable tourist experiences. This study aims to construct a virtual reality tour-guiding platform ...and then establish a technology acceptance model based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model. 391 students from a technological university in Taiwan participated in the study. Results indicated their learning effectiveness and technology acceptance within the education system. Interaction was an exogenous variable that has an indirect effect on technology use, implying the importance of interaction between people and devices within a digital tour environment.
At the heart of the entrepreneurial process in creative industries are entrepreneurial creativity and opportunity recognition, which influence entrepreneurs’ ability to create new ventures or ...significantly improve the position of an existing business. Recent entrepreneurship research has suggested that resource availability represents a double-edged sword, simultaneously facilitating and impeding new venture outcomes, while little research has explored how entrepreneurial creativity, opportunity recognition, and resource availability jointly affect entrepreneurial career success. To address the theoretical gap, this paper examines the moderating role of resource availability in the relationship between entrepreneurial creativity, opportunity recognition and career success of creative entrepreneurs.
To reflect the career success perceived by business founders in creative industries, five indicators of entrepreneurial success are examined, including career achievement, social reputation, entrepreneurial happiness, capability enhancement, and financial satisfaction. Hierarchical regression analysis empirically examines a sample of 296 entrepreneurs in creative industries. Results suggest that entrepreneurial creativity and opportunity recognition are positively related to entrepreneurial career success. We also find that resource availability generally strengthens the effect of entrepreneurial creativity and opportunity recognition on entrepreneur-perceived career success. Nevertheless, the relationship between opportunity recognition and financial satisfaction is found to be weakened by entrepreneurs’ resource availability. Integrating the theory of entrepreneurial effectuation and resource dependence theory, our findings indicate that entrepreneurial bricolage is crucial for creative entrepreneurship.
Performing high-quality bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) improves the clinical outcomes of victims with sudden cardiac arrest. Thus far, no systematic review has been performed to ...identify interventions associated with improved bystander CPR quality.
We searched Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid EMBASE, EBSCO CINAHL, Ovid PsycInfo, Thomson Reuters SCI-EXPANDED, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials to retrieve studies published from 1 January 1966 to 5 October 2018 associated with interventions that could improve the quality of bystander CPR. Data regarding participant characteristics, interventions, and design and outcomes of included studies were extracted.
Of the initially identified 2,703 studies, 42 were included. Of these, 32 were randomized controlled trials. Participants included adults, high school students, and university students with non-medical professional majors. Interventions improving bystander CPR quality included telephone dispatcher-assisted CPR (DA-CPR) with simplified or more concrete instructions, compression-only CPR, and other on-scene interventions, such as four-hand CPR for elderly rescuers, kneel on opposite sides for two-person CPR, and CPR with heels for a tired rescuer. Devices providing real-time feedback and mobile devices containing CPR applications or software were also found to be beneficial in improving the quality of bystander CPR. However, using mobile devices for improving CPR quality or for assisting DA-CPR might cause rescuers to delay starting CPR.
To further improve the clinical outcomes of victims with cardiac arrest, these effective interventions may be included in the guidelines for bystander CPR.

The effect of out-of-hospital intubation in patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest remains controversial. The Taipei City paramedics are the earliest authorized to perform out-of-hospital ...intubation among Asian areas. This study evaluates the association between successful intubation and out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survival in Taipei.
We analyzed 6 years of Utstein-based registry data from nontrauma adult patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest who underwent out-of-hospital airway management including intubation, laryngeal mask airway, or bag-valve-mask ventilation. The primary analysis was intubation success on patient outcomes. The primary outcome was survival to discharge and the secondary outcomes included sustained return of spontaneous circulation and favorable neurologic survival. Sensitivity analysis was performed with intubation attempts rather than intubation success. Subgroup analysis of advanced life support–serviced districts was also performed.
A total of 10,853 cases from 2008 to 2013 were analyzed. Among out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients receiving airway management, successful intubation, laryngeal mask airway, and bag-valve-mask ventilation was reported in 1,541, 3,099, and 6,213 cases, respectively. Compared with bag-valve-mask device use, successful out-of-hospital intubation was associated with improved chances of sustained return of spontaneous circulation (adjusted odds ratio aOR 1.91; 95% confidence interval CI 1.66 to 2.19), survival to discharge (aOR 1.98; 95% CI 1.57 to 2.49), and favorable neurologic outcome (aOR 1.44; 95% CI 1.03 to 2.03). The results were comparable in sensitivity and subgroup analyses.
In nontrauma adult out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in Taipei, successful out-of-hospital intubation was associated with improved odds of sustained return of spontaneous circulation, survival to discharge, and favorable neurologic outcome.
Chinese entrepreneurs cultivate and mobilize their guanxi networks to acquire information and resources for new ventures. Entrepreneurs in creative industries tend to suffer from especially high ...failure rates, but prior research pays little attention to understand whether or not creative entrepreneurs' guanxi networks help overcome obstacles in entrepreneurial activities. Through testing a sample of 293 creative entrepreneurs, this study examines the impact of entrepreneurs' four types of guanxi networks, namely family ties, business ties, community ties, and government ties. The findings reveal that guanxi networks indeed influence entrepreneurial success through the mediating effects of information accessibility and resource availability. Specifically, findings suggest that family ties, business ties, and community ties improve information accessibility, whereas family ties and government ties enhance resource availability.
PurposeThe dichotomy of views on “arts for arts sake” and “art must meet commerce” elicits the clash about how creative entrepreneurs encounter the dilemma of fulfilling personal satisfaction and ...chasing entrepreneurial aspiration along the entrepreneurial process. It is argued whether or not creative entrepreneurs can integrate artistic creativity and entrepreneurial alertness to disentangle the conflict and tension between art and commerce in the guanxi embedded culture context. The complex guanxi ties of creative entrepreneurs identified as bonding ties with families, bridging ties with friends and social ties with colleagues are presumed to activate personal and social values.Design/methodology/approachThe research design consists of two stages: face-to-face interviews and empirical survey. A total of four successful local creative entrepreneurs in craft arts were interviewed and asked questions related to their source of creative inspiration, market alertness and value creation. Findings derived from interviews enrich the questionnaire development of the empirical survey. The survey was conducted to realize the social phenomenon of creative entrepreneurs' guanxi, cognitive process and satisfaction with Taiwan's creative industry context. In total, 318 creative entrepreneurs’ responses were collected and analyzed by using structural equation modeling (SEM).FindingsResults suggest that guanxi networks lead to the acquisition of various social resources that are conducive to alertness in entrepreneurial opportunities and stimulate artistic creativity, which in turn gratify creative entrepreneurs' senses of entrepreneurial satisfaction with life, work and social contribution, as well as achieve higher entrepreneurial aspiration, perceived as social recognition and meaning of work.Practical implicationsResults of this study enrich the understanding of creative entrepreneurs and their awareness of balancing opportunity alerting and artistic creativity while starting creative businesses. Diverseness and closeness of guanxi networks can fill the gap between art and market and further pave the way to winning aspiration.Originality/valueThis paper advances the existing literature on creative entrepreneurship by adopting guanxi network theory to explore entrepreneurs' cognitive process in the linkage of artistic creativity and entrepreneurial alertness and their mediating effects on perceived entrepreneurial satisfaction and aspiration.
Recognizing that family data provide unique advantage of identifying rare risk variants in genetic association studies, many cohorts with related samples have gone through whole genome sequencing in ...large initiatives such as the NHLBI Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine (TOPMed) program. Analyzing rare variants poses challenges for binary traits in that some genotype categories may have few or no observed events, causing bias and inflation in commonly used methods. Several methods have recently been proposed to better handle rare variants while accounting for family relationship, but their performances have not been thoroughly evaluated together. Here we compare several existing approaches including SAIGE but not limited to related samples using simulations based on the Framingham Heart Study samples and genotype data from Illumina HumanExome BeadChip where rare variants are the majority. We found that logistic regression with likelihood ratio test applied to related samples was the only approach that did not have inflated type I error rates in both single variant test (SVT) and gene-based tests, followed by Firth logistic regression that had inflation in its direction insensitive gene-based test at prevalence 0.01 only, applied to either related or unrelated samples, though theoretically logistic regression and Firth logistic regression do not account for relatedness in samples. SAIGE had inflation in SVT at prevalence 0.1 or lower and the inflation was eliminated with a minor allele count filter of 5. As for power, there was no approach that outperformed others consistently among all single variant tests and gene-based tests.
