Inorganic resources can be detrimental to the environment when exploited. In comparison, organic resources help balance the soil's carbon and nitrogen (C/N) ratio, enhance soil fertility and benefit ecological protection. Current climate crises, rapid urbanization, and fast population growth are causing many natural forests to be converted to agricultural and industrial lands to fulfill ever-increasing food and developmental requirements. Application of different bio-resources becomes necessary for sustainable productivity of available lands. This study explores the effects of various organic amendments on the growth, morpho-physiological and biochemical attributes of three leguminous tree species: Dalbergia sissoo, Vachellia nilotica, and Acacia ampliceps, concerning sustainable productivity. One-year-old healthy, disease-free, and homogenous seedlings were used as study material in a greenhouse pot experiment. Four organic amendments, i.e., compost (CMP), cow dung (CD), poultry manure (PM), and biochar (BC), along with a control (CK) treatment, were applied. Results showed that all the organic amendments performed significantly better (P < 0.05) than CK. CD produced the most significant results, followed by BC application, while PM influence was the least. Among all treatments and species, the maximum values of root length, root biomass, chlorophyll content, carotenoids, catalase, and total phenolic content were recorded under the CD treatment. Whereas for plant height and collar diameter, no big differences were observed between CD and BC (P = 0.054). While comparing species, V. nilotica growth was significantly enhanced under organic amendments, followed by A. ampliceps. Combined and comparative results of studied parameters conclude that CD and BC were the most effective organic amendments, which greatly improved the growth of experimental leguminous tree species; this makes these two biofertilizers a powerful tool for sustainable agricultural productivity. Our study contributes toward an enhanced understanding of plant's morpho-physiological responses, biochemical growth patterns, controls, and activities under different bio-fertilizers.
Abstract
Background
To investigate the possible effect of implantable collamer lens (ICL) V4c on ocular biometric measurements by a new biometer Pentacam-AXL and partial coherence interferometry ...(PCI)-based IOLMaster 500 and intraocular lens power calculation using fourth-generation formula.
Methods
We retrospectively enrolled patients who underwent ICL (EVO-V4c, STAAR Surgical Co. Nidau, Switzerland) implantation surgery from September 2020 to November 2021. The Pentacam-AXL and IOLMaster 500 biometers were used to measure axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), keratometry (K), white to white (WTW), and central corneal thickness (CCT) values before and at least 2 months after ICL V4c implantation. The IOL power was calculated using the Barrett Universal II formula.
Results
The study included 45 eyes in 28 patients. There was a significant increase in ALs (average 0.03 ± 0.07 mm,
p
= 0.01) and a significant decrease of ACDs (average 0.19 ± 0.17 mm,
p
< 0.001) based on Pentacam-AXL. Similar changes in ALs and ACDs were also found in IOLMaster 500. In addition, the difference in WTWs in the two devices and that of CCTs in Pentacam-AXL were statistically significant. However, the preoperative and postoperative K1 and K2 were separately comparable using either device. The IOL power calculated by the Barrett Universal II formula did not change significantly either by the software built in Pentacam-AXL or by manually putting the parameters of the IOLMaster 500 into the formula manually (
p
= 0.058,
p
= 0.675, respectively).
Conclusions
Ocular parameters including ALs, ACDs, WTWs, and CCTs using a new Pentacam-AXL and standard PCI-based IOLMaster 500 changed significantly before and after the ICL V4c implantation, while IOL power prediction using the Barrett Universal II formula was little affected.
During cataract phacoemulsification surgery, the Alcon Centurion with Active Sentry can achieve a more stable anterior chamber, which allows a lower intraocular pressure (IOP) setting than the ...gravity fluidics system. In this randomized controlled trial, we compared these two systems' damage to the cornea under different IOP settings.
Seventy-eight eyes of 53 patients with corneal endothelial cell density (ECD) of 500∼1500/mm
were enrolled and randomly divided into the active fluidics system (AFS) group using an Active Sentry handpiece with 30 mmHg IOP setting (40 eyes) and the gravity fluidics system (GFS) group using an Ozil handpiece with 80 cmH
O IOP setting (38 eyes). Intraoperative parameters, visual acuity, corneal edema ratio, central corneal thickness (CCT) changes as well as loss rate of ECD were analyzed.
We observed no significant differences in best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), cumulative dissipated energy (CDE), total case time, estimated fluidics usage (EFU) and ophthalmic viscoelastic devices (OVDs) usage between the two groups. The enrolled eyes were further divided into soft nucleus (27 eyes) and hard nucleus (51 eyes) subgroups. And we found less pain complaint during surgeries, lower corneal edema ratio at 1-day and 1-week visit, smaller CCT changes at 1-day visit and lower ECD loss rate at 1-month visit (
< 0.05) in both subgroups of the AFS group than in the GFS group, implying higher intraoperative comfort levels and less corneal damage of the AFS group with a low IOP setting.
Owing to a lower IOP setting, Centurion
Vision System with Active Sentry handpiece causes less corneal damage and pain perception during phacoemulsification for patients with low pre-operative ECD.

The detection of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) still faces a huge challenge partially because of low abundance of CTCs (1-10 cells/mL). In this work, a plasmonic titled fiber Bragg grating biosensor ...is proposed for detection of breast cancer cells. The biosensor is made by an 18° TFBG with a 50 nm-thick gold nanofilm coating over the surface of the fiber, further immobilized with a specific antibody against GPR30, which is a membrane receptor expressed in many breast cancers, serving as bait. In vitro tests have confirmed that the proposed biosensor can detect breast cancer cells in concentration of 5 cells/mL within 20 minutes and has good linearity in the range of 5-1000 cells/mL, which has met the requirement of CTC detection in real conditions. Furthermore, theoretical analysis based on the experimental results shows that the limit of detection can even reach single-cell level. Our proposed biosensor has a simple structure, is easy to manufacture, is of small size, and has a good performance, making it a good choice for real-time, label-free, and milliliter-volume detection of cancer cells in future.
1 With the progress of urbanization and the number of motor vehicles increasing, pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers are brought into close contact, increasing the risk for all. In GBD 2019, transport ...injuries are divided into two categories: road injuries (pedestrian road injuries, cyclist road injuries, motorcyclist road injuries, motor vehicle road injuries, and other road injuries) and other transport injuries. Among all types of transport injuries, cyclist road injury was responsible for the highest age-standardized incidence rates, while pedestrian road injury was responsible for the highest age-standardized mortality rates, and motor vehicle road injury led to the highest age-standardized DALYs rates. In all types of transport injuries, cyclist road injury was responsible for the highest age-standardized incidence rates, while pedestrian road injury was responsible for the highest age-standardized mortality rates, and motor vehicle road injury led to the highest age-standardized DALYs rates. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) show promising therapeutic potential in treating inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and intraperitoneal delivery of MSCs have become a more effective route for IBD ...treatment. However, the underlying mechanisms are still poorly understood. Here, we found that intraperitoneally delivered MSCs significantly alleviated experimental colitis. Depletion of peritoneal B cells, but not macrophages, clearly impaired the therapeutic effects of MSCs. Intraperitoneally delivered MSCs improved IBD likely by boosting the IL-10-producing B cells in the peritoneal cavity, and a single intraperitoneal injection of MSCs could significantly prevent disease severity in a recurrent mouse colitis model, with lower proinflammation cytokines and high level of IL-10. The gene expression profile revealed that thrombospondin-1 (THBS1) was dramatically upregulated in MSCs after coculture with peritoneal lavage fluid from colitis mice. Knockout of THBS1 expression in MSCs abolished their therapeutic effects in colitis and the induction of IL-10-producing B cells. Mechanistically, THBS1 modulates the activation of transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), which combines with TGF-β receptors on B cells and contributes to IL-10 production. Blocking the interaction between THBS1 and latent TGF-β or inhibiting TGF-β receptors (TGF-βR) significantly reversed the THBS1-mediated induction of IL-10-producing B cells and the therapeutic effects on colitis. Collectively, our study revealed that intraperitoneally delivered MSCs secreted THBS1 to boost IL-10
Bregs and control the progression and recurrence of colitis, providing new insight for the prevention and treatment of IBD.

In this paper, the question of when the subdirect sum of SDD1 matrices is in the class of SDD1 matrices is studied. Some sufficient conditions are given. Moreover, these sufficient conditions only ...depend on the elements of given matrices; thus, they provide some simple criteria for application. Numerical examples are also presented to illustrate the corresponding results.
Twist sensors have emerged as crucial tools in the field of structural health monitoring, playing a significant role in monitoring and ensuring the integrity of critical infrastructure such as dams, ...tunnels, bridges, pipelines, and buildings. We proposed and demonstrated an all-fiber in-line twist sensor which was based on a capillary fiber spliced between two single-mode fibers with a transverse offset. Through a series of experiments, the sensor’s performance was evaluated and quantified. The results showcased remarkable twist sensitivities in both clockwise and anticlockwise directions. With a transverse offset of 8.0 µm, the sensor exhibited twist sensitivities of −0.077 dB/° and 0.043 dB/° in the clockwise and anticlockwise directions, respectively, in the measured twist range from 0 to 90°. Furthermore, it was also demonstrated that the sensor was temperature insensitive at the chosen wavelength of 1520 nm, which can assist in increasing measurement accuracy. Our sensor’s low cost, simplicity of manufacture, and improved performance will push forward its adoption in future engineering applications such as structural health monitoring in dams, tunnels, and buildings.
