The tectonic evolution of the Pamir bears essential information for understanding intracontinental tectonic processes within the context of India-Asia convergence. However, it is unclear whether the ...arcuate shape of the Pamir is entirely the result of the India-Asia collision, or may have been in part an inherited, pre-Cenozoic feature. In this study, we address the evolution of the NE Chinese Pamir during the Paleogene by reviewing the stratigraphy of twelve sections in the western Tarim Basin and the establishment of sedimentary facies. The results indicate three episodes of deposition of alluvial coarse sediments in the foreland regions of NE Chinese Pamir during the (1) early Paleocene, (2) late Paleocene to early Eocene and (3) middle Eocene to Oligocene, respectively. These are correspondingly attributed to (1) retroarc deformation in an Andean-type margin of the southern Asia during subduction of the Neo-Tethys Ocean, (2) the immediate response in the Pamir to the India-Asia collision, and (3) continued India-Asia convergence. The alluvial conglomerates with grain-size up to 5–10 cm, imply a transport distance <60 km from the fan apex. This result, together with the 20–50 km northward thrust displacements, suggests that the orogen/basin boundary between the Pamir and the Tarim-Alai Basin was located less than ca. 80–110 km to the south from the present location of the Main Pamir Thrust during the Paleogene, indicating the arcuate shape of the Pamir was already largely established by the Paleogene, rather than entirely a result of the India-Asia continental collision.

Several competing hypotheses have been proposed to explain east-west extension observed across the Himalayan orogen, based primarily on observations from the western and central Himalaya. They make predictions for the temporal and spatial patterns of deformation in the eastern Himalaya. These tectonic models include radial spreading or oroclinal bending of the Himalayan arc, oblique convergence of the Indian continent, tearing or lateral detachment of the Indian slab and eastward flow of lithosphere. Here, for the first time we constrain the activity history of the Cona rift, the only north-trending rift currently recognized in the eastern Himalaya, based on biotite and K-feldspar 40Ar/39Ar and zircon and apatite (U–Th)/He thermochronology, to evaluate these proposed rifting mechanisms. Low-temperature thermochronological results suggest that the Cona rift is the youngest rift system in the Himalayas: after a slow phase of exhumation since ∼14 Ma (∼0.2–0.13 mm/yr), normal faulting initiated here at ∼3.0–2.3 Ma with a fault slip rate of ∼3.8–1.6 mm/yr and a horizontal extension magnitude of ∼2–5 km. Analysis of rifting across the Himalayas shows that rift initiation ages young eastward, which is matched by eastward decreasing rift-extension magnitudes. Monotonically eastward younging rift development is consistent with the tectonic model involving eastward lithospheric flow driven by Indian slab dynamics and coupled asynchronous gravitational potential energy gradients.
The Tibetan Plateau offers an ideal region for understanding the processes of continental collision and related intracontinental deformation. However, when the Cenozoic deformation was initiated in ...the present northeastern margin of the plateau, >2000 km north to the Indian-Eurasian collision front, remains an issue in debate. Two competing end-member models have been proposed, involving immediate deformation response and progressive deformation propagation. Solving this problem partly relies on determining whether there was contemporaneous deformation with initial Indian-Eurasian collision along the northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. In this study, we employ apatite fission track (AFT) analysis to shed new light on the exhumation history of the Kuantan Shan-Hei Shan along the northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau, with a motivation to determine whether deformation-related exhumation during initial collision stage occurred in the region. The 22 granite samples produce AFT ages ranging from 22.3 ± 2.6 Ma to 175 ± 18 Ma and mean track lengths from 11.17 ± 2.26 μm to 13.63 ± 1.93 μm. Thermal history modeling indicates five episodes of rapid exhumation-related cooling, which took place in the early Jurassic, early Cretaceous and late Cretaceous, during/since the Eocene and since the middle Miocene. The exhumation events prior to the Cenozoic are attributed to far-field responses of successive closure of fossil oceans and assembly of blocks along the southern margin of the Eurasian continent. The Eocene exhumation along the Kuantan Shan-Hei Shan is speculated to represent an immediate response to the initial Indian-Eurasian collision. These results lend support to the immediate deformation response model along the northeastern plateau. The episodic exhumation observed in this study, combined with previous geophysical findings, implies that the Kuantan Shan-Hei Shan represents the southern margin of the Alashan Block, serving as a significant and long-lived lithospheric weak zone susceptible to intracontinental deformation during episodes of far-field tectonic event.

In an orogen‐foreland basin system, syn‐orogenic sedimentation and deformation records within the foreland basin provide critical evidence for understanding uplift and erosion processes of adjacent ...orogenic belts. Foreland fold‐and‐thrust belts (FTBs) are widely developed around the Tian Shan range, Central Asia. Problem of how crustal shortening accumulates and propagates from the Tian Shan to adjacent foreland basins is essential for understanding the overall dynamics of Tian Shan. In this study, we interpreted three high‐resolution seismic reflection profiles to estimate the magnitude and distribution of Cenozoic shortening across the Eastern Kuqa FTB, South Tian Shan foreland. Combined with well‐dated syntectonic stratigraphy, we further evaluate the timing, rate, and migration of the deformation front of the Kuqa FTB. Our results suggest that the Kuqa FTB's total crustal shortening increases westward. The distribution of crustal shortening across secondary structural belts shows a gradual, basinward decrease, which can be explained by the telescoped mechanism. Propagation rates of the Kuqa FTB's deformation front indicate an episodic propagation of the foreland thrust wedge, with an acceleration after ∼12 Ma. Similar episodic propagation pattern has also been observed in other foreland FTBs around the Tian Shan, but they show significant spatio‐temporal variations in the propagation stages and related rates.
Plain Language Summary
The Tian Shan range stretches over 2,500 km from east to west and is one of the Earth's largest intracontinental orogenic belts. As the mountains grew, deformation propagated into foreland basins around the range, forming a series of fold‐and‐thrust belts (FTBs). To better understand the spatial distribution of crustal shortening, and basinward propagation process in foreland FTBs, we interpret and reconstruct three high‐resolution seismic profiles across the Eastern Kuqa FTB, South Tian Shan. Our study indicates that the total crustal shortening of the Eastern Kuqa FTB increases westward. Within the Kuqa FTB, a telescoped distribution pattern of crustal shortening is also observed in frontal thin‐skinned structures above the regional salt décollements. In addition, we find that the basinward propagation of Kuqa FTB is episodic, which is featured by a two‐stage evolution pattern.

How long-term changes in surface topography relate to coseismic uplift is key to understanding the creation of high elevations along active mountain fronts, and remains hotly debated. Here we ...investigate this link by modeling the development of growth strata and the folding of river terraces above the Pishan duplex system in the southern Tarim Basin. We show that synchronous duplex thrusting of two neighboring faults with varying slip rates, associated with in-sequence propagation of the Pishan thrust system, is required to explain the presence of opposite-dipping panels of growth strata on the duplex front, and basinward migration of terrace fold crests. 6.4 Pishan earthquake on the frontal thrust. These results suggest that topography mismatch at different time scales can reflect the long-term kinematic evolution of fault systems. Thus, our study highlights the importance of characterizing complex subsurface fault kinematics for studying topographic growth, and motivates rethinking of the mountain building process in worldwide active fold-and-thrust belts, from short-term to long-term timescales.
The western Kunlun thrust belt defines the boundary between the stable Tarim Basin in the north and the intensely deformed Cenozoic Tibetan Plateau in the south. Because of its important tectonic ...position, understanding its tectonic evolution should have important implications for propagation of deformation from Tibet to its neighboring cratonal regions during India-Eurasia convergence. We here present new structural analyses based on field investigations and seismic reflection profiles across the Hotan-Tiklik segment of the western Kunlun thrust belt. The results indicate that the structural section crosses two major thrust zones: the Tiklik zone in the hinterland to the south and the Hotan zone in the foreland to the north. Within these, the Hotan thrust zone is thin skinned, with its deformation characterized by fault-bend folding and fault slipping along detachment layers, whereas the Tiklik thrust zone involves basement, with its deformation driven by the currently steeply dipping Tiklik fault. Results from apatite fission track thermochronology in combination with growth strata and balanced cross section indicate that the Hotan-Tiklik segment underwent two-stage deformation: (1) development of the Tiklik thrust during the late Oligocene–early Miocene and again since the mid- to late Miocene and (2) activity of the Hotan thrust since the mid- to late Miocene as a result of basinward propagation of thrusting. The balanced cross section, combined with the apatite fission track results, suggests that the Hotan-Tiklik segment contributes a total shortening magnitude of more than ca. 34 ± 6 km. Within this, ca. 4 ± 2 and ca. 23 ± 1 km of the shortenings were absorbed by the Hotan anticline and the Hotan detachment fault, respectively, both of which were related to detachment layers. This suggests that detachment layers played an efficient role in propagating deformation from the western Tibetan Plateau into the Tarim Basin.

The Cenozoic India-Asia collision reactivated several ancient thrust belts in the interior of the Asian continent, including the West and East Kunlun ranges in central Tibet, and the Tian Shan and ...Qilian Shan further north. Both basin sedimentary records and thermochronological data show that the uplift of the South Tian Shan and Qilian Shan at the north occurred earlier than that of the West and East Kunlun ranges at the south. Diachronous continental deformation and initiation of uplift during orogeny are contrary to the general notion that the stress transfer in response to the India-Asia collision should propagate sequentially from south to north. Here we systematically conducted 2D thermo-mechanical simulations to investigate possible factors for this diachronous deformation pattern. The results show that a hotter Tian Shan lithosphere, with Moho temperature >100 °C hotter than that of the proto-southern Asia, leads to an earlier and higher uplift of the Tian Shan. Additionally, a faster convergence rate of the India-Asia collision results in a more efficient transfer of boundary force into the upper plate's interior, giving rise to a larger amount of uplift in the Tian Shan. We conclude that intra-continental ranges with weaker lithosphere, such as the Tian Shan or Qilian Shan, uplift earlier than stronger regions, such as the West and East Kunlun ranges. Faster convergence rates amplify this situation. Our results imply that the unique diachronous growth of the Tibetan plateau arises from its complex pre-collisional history, which includes collided arc-continent terranes with hotter and weaker lithosphere that respond to the effects of far-field stress transfer.
