Background
Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) is a severe cutaneous adverse drug reaction. However, its histopathological features have not been well defined.
...Objectives
To identify the clinicohistopathological findings of DRESS, and analyse the cutaneous histopathological changes observed in DRESS compared with those observed in maculopapular exanthema (MPE).
Methods
In a retrospective study, conducted at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital (Taiwan) between 2001 and 2011, we compared the clinicohistopathological features of 32 patients with probable/definite DRESS (defined by the RegiSCAR scoring system) with those of 17 patients with MPE.
Results
The major pathological changes observed in patients with DRESS included dyskeratosis (97%), epidermal spongiosis (78%), interface vacuolization (91%), perivascular lymphocytic infiltration (97%) and eosinophilic infiltration (72%). Many pathological features were common to both MPE and DRESS. However, severe dyskeratosis, epidermal spongiosis and severe interface vacuolization were significantly more prominent in cases of DRESS (P < 0·05). The presence of severe dyskeratosis was significantly associated with the clinical severity of renal impairment (P = 0·01).
Conclusions
The severe dyskeratosis detected in patients with DRESS may correlate with a greater extent of systemic involvement compared with that noted in MPE. However, the histopathological changes associated with DRESS are not entirely specific.

Background: To clarify the role of intention to treat for patients with localized nasal natural killer (NK)/T-cell lymphoma, and to determine the prognostic factors for these patients. Patients and ...methods: We conducted a retrospective review of 46 patients with localized nasal NK/T-cell lymphomas treated at a single institute between January 1988 and July 2002. Results: The type of intended treatment was a significant factor for overall survival (OS) (5-year OS: RT versus CT = 83.3% versus 28.6%, P = 0.0269) or failure-free survival (FFS) (5-year FFS: RT versus CT = 83.3% versus 27.1%, P = 0.0247). In the intended chemotherapy group, salvage with radiotherapy was superior to chemotherapy alone for OS (5-year OS: 42.2% versus 20.0%, P = 0.0252) or FFS (5-year FFS: 41.0% versus 20.0%, P = 0.0352). On multivariate analysis, both N stage and serum lactate hehydrogenase level were independent factors for OS and FFS. No radiotherapy was an independent adverse factor for OS; advanced T stage and more than one extranodal involvement were independent adverse factors for FFS. Conclusions: Patients with localized nasal NK/T-cell lymphomas were better managed with radiotherapy as front-line therapy. The advantage of radiotherapy persisted even as palliative therapy after chemotherapy.
Abstract Background Sarcopenia is a syndrome characterized by progressive and generalized loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength. This study aims to explore the prevalence of sarcopenia in ...overweight and obese gastric cancer (GC) patients and figured out the impacts of sarcopenia on the postoperative complication of overweight and obese GC patients. Methods According to the recommended body-mass index (BMI) for Asian populations by WHO, we conducted a prospective study of overweight and obese gastric cancer patients (BMI ≥ 23kg/m2 ) under curative gastrectomy from August 2014 to December 2015. Including lumbar skeletal muscle index, handgrip strength and gait speed as the sarcopenic components were measured before surgery. Patients were followed up after gastrectomy to gain the actual clinical outcomes. Factors contributing to postoperative complications were analyzed by univariate and multivariate analysis. Results Total of 206 overweight or obese patients were enrolled in this study, 14 patients were diagnosed sarcopenia and were demonstrated having significantly association with higher risk of postoperative complications, higher hospital costs, and higher rate of 30-days readmission compared with the non-sarcopenic ones. On the basis of univariate and multivariate analysis, sarcopenia was an independent risk factor for postoperative complication of overweight and obese patients with gastric cancer ( P = 0.002). Conclusion Sarcopenia is an independent predictor of postoperative complications in overweight or obese patients with gastric cancer after radical gastrectomy.

Infection by hepatitis B virus (HBV) accounts for 50-80% of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development worldwide, in which the HBV-encoded X protein (HBx) has critical role in the induction of ...carcinogenesis. Several studies have shown that thyroid hormone (TH) suppresses HCC development and protects hepatocytes from HBx-induced damage, thus it is of interest to examine whether TH can protect hepatocytes from HBx-induced carcinogenesis. By treating HBx- transgenic mice with or without TH, we confirmed the protective effects of TH on HBx-induced hepatocarcinogenesis, which was achieved via reduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) inflicted DNA damage. We further found that TH induced biogenesis of mitochondria (MITO) and autophagy of HBx-targeted MITO simultaneously, consequently leading to suppression of HBx-promoted ROS and carcinogenesis. Using microarray data analysis, this protective effect of TH was found to be mediated via activation of PTEN-induced kinase 1 (PINK1) in hepatocytes. PINK1, in turn, activated and recruited Parkin, an E3 ligase, to ubiquitinate MITO-associated HBx protein and trigger selective mitophagy. The pathological significance of the TH/PINK1 pathway in liver protection was confirmed by the concomitant decrease in expression of both TR and PINK1 in matched HCC tumor tissues and negatively correlated with aggressive progression of cancer and poor prognosis. Our data indicate that TH/PINK1/Parkin pathway has a critical role in protecting hepatocytes from HBx-induced carcinogenesis. Notably, several liver-targeting therapeutic derivatives of TH facilitating prevention or therapy of steatosis have been identified. Furthermore, our proof-of-concept experiments suggest that application of T
constitutes an effective novel therapeutic or preventive option for HCC. Thus, the utilization of the agonists of TRs could be the meaningful strategy in liver relative diseases, ranging from simple hepatic steatosis to HCC.
Background
This study aimed to identify the potential circulating biomarkers of protein, mRNAs, and long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) to differentiate the papillary thyroid cancers from benign thyroid ...tumors.
Methods
The study population of 100 patients was classified into identification (10 patients with papillary thyroid cancers and 10 patients with benign thyroid tumors) and validation groups (45 patients with papillary thyroid cancers and 35 patients with benign thyroid tumors). The Sengenics Immunome Protein Array-combined data mining approach using the Open Targets Platform was used to identify the putative protein biomarkers, and their expression validated using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Next-generation sequencing by Illumina HiSeq was used for the detection of dysregulated mRNAs and lncRNAs. The website Timer v2.0 helped identify the putative mRNA biomarkers, which were significantly over-expressed in papillary thyroid cancers than in adjacent normal thyroid tissue. The mRNA and lncRNA biomarker expression was validated by a real-time polymerase chain reaction.
Results
Although putative protein and mRNA biomarkers have been identified, their serum expression could not be confirmed in the validation cohorts. In addition, seven lncRNAs (TCONS_00516490, TCONS_00336559, TCONS_00311568, TCONS_00321917, TCONS_00336522, TCONS_00282483, and TCONS_00494326) were identified and validated as significantly downregulated in patients with papillary thyroid cancers compared to those with benign thyroid tumors. These seven lncRNAs showed moderate accuracy based on the area under the curve (AUC = 0.736) of receiver operating characteristic in predicting the occurrence of papillary thyroid cancers.
Conclusions
We identified seven downregulated circulating lncRNAs with the potential for predicting the occurrence of papillary thyroid cancers.
To investigate the global incidence of prostate cancer with special attention to the changing age structures. Data regarding the cancer incidence and population statistics were retrieved from the ...International Agency for Research on Cancer in World Health Organization. Eight developing and developed jurisdictions in Asia and the Western countries were selected for global comparison. Time series were constructed based on the cancer incidence rates from 1988 to 2007. The incidence rate of the population aged ≥ 65 was adjusted by the increasing proportion of elderly population, and was defined as the "aging-adjusted incidence rate". Cancer incidence and population were then projected to 2030. The aging-adjusted incidence rates of prostate cancer in Asia (Hong Kong, Japan and China) and the developing Western countries (Costa Rica and Croatia) had increased progressively with time. In the developed Western countries (the United States, the United Kingdom and Sweden), we observed initial increases in the aging-adjusted incidence rates of prostate cancer, which then gradually plateaued and even decreased with time. Projections showed that the aging-adjusted incidence rates of prostate cancer in Asia and the developing Western countries were expected to increase in much larger extents than the developed Western countries.

Especially, hybrids with metal nanoparticles offer the unique possibility of combining the catalytic, electronic, and optical properties of metal nanoparticles with PCN. Here, we provide a comprehensive overview of PCN materials and their hybrids, emphasizing heterostructures with metal nanoparticles. We focus on recent advances encompassing synthetic strategies, design principles, photocatalytic applications, and charge-transfer mechanisms. We also discuss how the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of some noble metals NPs (
e.g.
Au, Ag, and Cu), bimetallic compositions, and even non-noble metals NPs (
e.g.
, Bi) synergistically contribute with PCN in light-driven transformations. Finally, we provide a perspective on the field, in which the understanding of the enhancement mechanisms combined with truly controlled synthesis can act as a powerful tool to the establishment of the design principles needed to take the field of photocatalysis with PCN to a new level, where the desired properties and performances can be planned in advance, and the target material synthesized accordingly.

Based on these circuits, a better balanced filter structure is implemented so that the desired differential-mode response may be realized and the level of common-mode noise may be minimized simultaneously. Besides, a suitable capacitive or inductive cross-coupled effect is introduced so as to create two transmission zeros for improving the filter selectivity; however, it also enhances the signal imbalance and degrades the common-mode rejection. In this study, various second- and fourth-order balanced filters are implemented to discuss the associated differential-mode responses and the signal-imbalance phenomena resulted from the cross-coupled effect.
