In this article, the continuity in music taste from parents to their children is discussed via a multi-actor design. In our models music preferences of 325 adolescents and both their parents were ...linked, with parental and adolescent educational level as covariates. Parents' preferences for different types of music that had been popular when they were young were subsumed under the general labels of Pop, Rock and Highbrow. Current adolescent music preferences resolved into Pop, Rock, Highbrow and Dance. Among partners in a couple, tastes were similar; for both generations, education was linked to taste; and parental preferences predicted adolescent music choices. More specifically, the preference of fathers and mothers for Pop was associated with adolescent preferences for Pop and Dance. Parents' preferences for Rock seemed to indicate their daughters would also like Rock music, but not their sons. Parental passion for Highbrow music was associated with Highbrow preferences among their children. It is concluded that preferences for cultural artifacts such as (popular) music show continuity from generation to generation.
We evaluated the ACCESS cardiac troponin I (cTnI) immunoassay as a marker for myocardial infarction (MI). Total imprecision was 6.0% to 13.5%, the minimum detectable concentration was 0.007 microg/L, ...and the limit of quantitation was 0.046 microg/L. Comparison of cTnI measurement between the ACCESS and Stratus systems (n = 114) showed a proportional difference: ACCESS cTnI = 0.0996 Stratus cTnI + 0.049 microg/L (r = 0.811). Fifty-nine of 61 ambulatory patients without cardiac symptoms had no detectable cTnI (95% range, 0.00 to 0.025 microg/L). The optimum cutoff for discriminating MI (n = 289, 45 with MI) was 0.15 microg/L by receiver operator characteristic curve analysis; at this cutoff, the ACCESS cTnI assay showed a sensitivity of 88.9% (95% CI, 79.7-98.1%) and specificity of 91.8% (95% CI, 88.4-95.2%). The ACCESS cTnI assay results showed 89.4% and 93.0% concordance with the MB isoenzyme of creatine kinase (CK-MB) mass and Stratus cTnI results, respectively, for classification of patients with suspected MI. The ACCESS cTnI assay appears to show sensitivity and specificity comparable with those of both CK-MB mass and Stratus cTnI assays for the diagnosis of MI in patients presenting within 12 h of onset of symptoms.
Abstract Mutations in the LRRK2 gene represent the most common genetic cause of late onset Parkinson's disease. The physiological and pathological roles of LRRK2 are yet to be fully determined but ...evidence points towards LRRK2 mutations causing a gain in kinase function, impacting on neuronal maintenance, vesicular dynamics and neurotransmitter release. To explore the role of physiological levels of mutant LRRK2, we created knock-in (KI) mice harboring the most common LRRK2 mutation G2019S in their own genome. We have performed comprehensive dopaminergic, behavioral and neuropathological analyses in this model up to 24 months of age. We find elevated kinase activity in the brain of both heterozygous and homozygous mice. Although normal at 6 months, by 12 months of age, basal and pharmacologically induced extracellular release of dopamine is impaired in both heterozygous and homozygous mice, corroborating previous findings in transgenic models over-expressing mutant LRRK2. Via in vivo microdialysis measurement of basal and drug-evoked extracellular release of dopamine and its metabolites, our findings indicate that exocytotic release from the vesicular pool is impaired. Furthermore, profound mitochondrial abnormalities are evident in the striatum of older homozygous G2019S KI mice, which are consistent with mitochondrial fission arrest. We anticipate that this G2019S mouse line will be a useful pre-clinical model for further evaluation of early mechanistic events in LRRK2 pathogenesis and for second-hit approaches to model disease progression.
Ultrahigh energy neutrinos are interesting messenger particles since, if detected, they can transmit exclusive information about ultrahigh energy processes in the Universe. These particles, with ...energies above 10 super(16)eV , interact very rarely. Therefore, detectors that instrument several gigatons of matter are needed to discover them. The ARA detector is currently being constructed at the South Pole. It is designed to use the Askaryan effect, the emission of radio waves from neutrino-induced cascades in the South Pole ice, to detect neutrino interactions at very high energies. With antennas distributed among 37 widely separated stations in the ice, such interactions can be observed in a volume of several hundred cubic kilometers. Currently three deep ARA stations are deployed in the ice, of which two have been taking data since the beginning of 2013. In this article, the ARA detector "as built" and calibrations are described. Data reduction methods used to distinguish the rare radio signals from overwhelming backgrounds of thermal and anthropogenic origin are presented. Using data from only two stations over a short exposure time of 10 months, a neutrino flux limit of 1.5x10 super(-6)GeV/cm super(2)/s/sr is calculated for a particle energy of 10 super(18)eV , which offers promise for the full ARA detector.
We report a search for effects of large extra spatial dimensions in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV with the D0 detector, using events containing a pair of electrons or photons. ...The data are in good agreement with the expected background and do not exhibit evidence for large extra dimensions. We set the most restrictive lower limits to date, at the 95% C.L. on the effective Planck scale between 1.0 and 1.4 TeV for several formalisms and numbers of extra dimensions.
More than 50 million people worldwide sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI) annually. Detection of intracranial injuries relies on head CT, which is overused and resource intensive. Blood-based ...brain biomarkers hold the potential to predict absence of intracranial injury and thus reduce unnecessary head CT scanning. We sought to validate a test combining ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase-L1 (UCH-L1) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), at predetermined cutoff values, to predict traumatic intracranial injuries on head CT scan acutely after TBI.
This prospective, multicentre observational trial included adults (≥18 years) presenting to participating emergency departments with suspected, non-penetrating TBI and a Glasgow Coma Scale score of 9–15. Patients were eligible if they had undergone head CT as part of standard emergency care and blood collection within 12 h of injury. UCH-L1 and GFAP were measured in serum and analysed using prespecified cutoff values of 327 pg/mL and 22 pg/mL, respectively. UCH-L1 and GFAP assay results were combined into a single test result that was compared with head CT results. The primary study outcomes were the sensitivity and the negative predictive value (NPV) of the test result for the detection of traumatic intracranial injury on head CT.
Between Dec 6, 2012, and March 20, 2014, 1977 patients were recruited, of whom 1959 had analysable data. 125 (6%) patients had CT-detected intracranial injuries and eight (<1%) had neurosurgically manageable injuries. 1288 (66%) patients had a positive UCH-L1 and GFAP test result and 671 (34%) had a negative test result. For detection of intracranial injury, the test had a sensitivity of 0·976 (95% CI 0·931–0·995) and an NPV of 0·996 (0·987–0·999). In three (<1%) of 1959 patients, the CT scan was positive when the test was negative.
These results show the high sensitivity and NPV of the UCH-L1 and GFAP test. This supports its potential clinical role for ruling out the need for a CT scan among patients with TBI presenting at emergency departments in whom a head CT is felt to be clinically indicated. Future studies to determine the value added by this biomarker test to head CT clinical decision rules could be warranted.

Rates of homogeneous nucleation of ice in micrometre-sized water droplets are reported. Measurements were made using a new system in which droplets were supported on a hydrophobic substrate and their ...phase was monitored using optical microscopy as they were cooled at a controlled rate. Our nucleation rates are in agreement, given the quoted uncertainties, with the most recent literature data. However, the level of uncertainty in the rate of homogeneous freezing remains unacceptable given the importance of homogeneous nucleation to cloud formation in the Earth's atmosphere. We go on to use the most recent thermodynamic data for cubic ice (the metastable phase thought to nucleate from supercooled water) to estimate the interfacial energy of the cubic ice-supercooled water interface. We estimate a value of 20.8 ± 1.2 mJ m
−2
in the temperature range 234.9-236.7 K.
Temperature dependent nucleation rates of ice in water are analysed assuming the metastable cubic phase of ice nucleates.
