We present new limits on exotic keV-scale physics based on 478 kg d of Majorana Demonstrator commissioning data. Constraints at the 90% confidence level are derived on bosonic dark matter (DM) and ...solar axion couplings, Pauli exclusion principle violating (PEPV) decay, and electron decay using monoenergetic peak signal limits above our background. Our most stringent DM constraints are set for 11.8 keV mass particles, limiting g_{Ae}<4.5×10^{-13} for pseudoscalars and (α^{'}/α)<9.7×10^{-28} for vectors. We also report a 14.4 keV solar axion coupling limit of g_{AN}^{eff}×g_{Ae}<3.8×10^{-17}, a 1/2β^{2}<8.5×10^{-48} limit on the strength of PEPV electron transitions, and a lower limit on the electron lifetime of τ_{e}>1.2×10^{24} yr for e^{-}→ invisible.
We propose an experimental search for an axion-induced oscillating electric dipole moment (OEDM) for electrons using state-of-the-art alkali vapor-cell atomic magnetometers. The axion is a ...hypothesized new fundamental particle which can resolve the strong charge-parity problem and be a prominent dark matter candidate. This experiment utilizes an atomic magnetometer as both a source of optically polarized electron spins and a magnetic-field sensor. The interaction of the axion field, oscillating at a frequency equal to the axion mass, with an electron spin induces a sizable OEDM of the electron at the same frequency as the axion field. When the alkali vapor is subjected to an electric field and a magnetic field, the electron OEDM interacts with the electric field, resulting in an electron spin precession at the spin's Larmor frequency in the magnetic field. The resulting precession signal can be sensitively detected with a probe laser beam of the atomic magnetometer. We estimate that the experiment is sensitive to the axion-photon interaction in ultralight axion masses from 10−15 to 10−10 eV. It is able to improve the current experimental limit up to 5 orders of magnitude, exploring new axion parameter spaces.
Summary Objective To evaluate the effects of PTH(1-34) on cartilage, subchondral bone mass and structure in medial meniscectomized guinea pigs and compare them to those of celecoxib (CLX). Method ...Forty-eight 3-month-old male Hartley albino guinea pigs received either sham or medial meniscectomy (MNX) operations. One week after the procedure, meniscectomized animals began 12 weeks of treatment by oral administration of CLX (20 mg/kg, daily), subcutaneous injection of PTH (1-34) (24 μg/kg, 5 days/week), or normal saline for MNX group. All animals were euthanized 12 weeks later, cartilage degeneration and subchondral bone micro-architecture was analyzed. Results OARSI scores indicated cartilage degeneration was partially inhibited by either CLX or PTH(1-34). Cartilage was significantly thicker in PTH(1-34)-treated animals than in CLX-treated animals. Both CLX and PTH(1-34) treatment were associated with lower ADAMTS-4 and periostin expression than MNX. MMP-13 expression in PTH(1-34) group was significantly lower than that in CLX group. However, AGG expression and the ratio of Col-II/MMP-13 expression in PTH(1-34) group were significantly higher than in the CLX group. Micro-CT analysis showed BMD, BV/TV, and Tb.Th levels to be significantly lower in the MNX group and CLX groups than in the sham group, but these parameters were significantly higher in the PTH(1-34) group than in either the MNX group or CLX group. Conclusions Both CLX and PTH(1-34) exhibits protective effects on cartilage degeneration in meniscectomized guinea pigs. However, PTH(1-34) exhibited superior performance to CLX not only in metabolism of cartilage tissue but also in maintenance of subchondral bone micro-architecture.
In plant innate immunity, the surface‐exposed leucine‐rich repeat receptor kinases EFR and FLS2 mediate recognition of the bacterial pathogen‐associated molecular patterns EF‐Tu and flagellin, ...respectively. We identified the Arabidopsis stromal‐derived factor‐2 (SDF2) as being required for EFR function, and to a lesser extent FLS2 function. SDF2 resides in an endoplasmic reticulum (ER) protein complex with the Hsp40 ERdj3B and the Hsp70 BiP, which are components of the ER‐quality control (ER‐QC). Loss of SDF2 results in ER retention and degradation of EFR. The differential requirement for ER‐QC components by EFR and FLS2 could be linked to N‐glycosylation mediated by STT3a, a catalytic subunit of the oligosaccharyltransferase complex involved in co‐translational N‐glycosylation. Our results show that the plasma membrane EFR requires the ER complex SDF2–ERdj3B–BiP for its proper accumulation, and provide a demonstration of a physiological requirement for ER‐QC in transmembrane receptor function in plants. They also provide an unexpected differential requirement for ER‐QC and N‐glycosylation components by two closely related receptors.
Epigenetic modifications are a driving force in carcinogenesis. However, their role in cancer metastasis remains poorly understood. The present study investigated the role of DNA methylation in the ...cervical cancer metastasis. Here, we report evidence of the overexpression of DNA methyltransferases 3B (DNMT3B) in invasive cervical cancer and of the inhibition of metastasis by DNMT3B interference. Using methyl-DNA immunoprecipitation coupled with microarray analysis, we found that the protein tyrosine phosphatase receptor type R (PTPRR) was silenced through DNMT3B-mediated methylation in the cervical cancer. PTPRR inhibited p44/42 MAPK signaling, the expression of the transcription factor AP1, human papillomavirus (HPV) oncogenes E6/E7 and DNMTs. The methylation status of PTPRR increased in cervical scrapings (n=358) in accordance with disease severity, especially in invasive cancer. Methylation of the PTPRR promoter has an important role in the metastasis and may be a biomarker of invasive cervical cancer.
The MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR is an ultra-low-background experiment searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay in Ge76. The heavily shielded array of germanium detectors, placed nearly a mile ...underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, also allows searches for new exotic physics. We present the first limits for trinucleon decay-specific modes and invisible decay modes for Ge isotopes. We find a half-life limit of 4.9×1025 yr for the decay Ge76(ppn)→Zn73 e+π+ and 4.7×1025 yr for the decay Ge76(ppp)→Cu73 e+π+π+. The half-life limit for the invisible triproton decay mode of Ge76 was found to be 7.5×1024 yr.
Since echinocandins are recommended as first line therapy for invasive candidiasis, detection of resistance, mainly due to alteration in FKS protein, is of main interest. EUCAST AFST recommends ...testing both MIC of anidulafungin and micafungin, and breakpoints (BPs) have been proposed to detect echinocandin-resistant isolates. We analyzed MIC distribution for all three available echinocandins of 2,787 clinical yeast isolates corresponding to 5 common and 16 rare yeast species, using the standardized EUCAST method for anidulafungin and modified for caspofungin and micafungin (AM3-MIC). In our database, 64 isolates of common pathogenic species were resistant to anidulafungin, according to the EUCAST BP, and/or to caspofungin, using our previously published threshold (AM3-MIC ≥ 0.5 mg/L). Among these 64 isolates, 50 exhibited 21 different FKS mutations. We analyzed the capacity of caspofungin AM3-MIC and anidulafungin MIC determination in detecting isolates with FKS mutation. They were always identified using caspofungin AM3-MIC and the local threshold while some isolates were misclassified using anidulafungin MIC and EUCAST threshold. However, both methods misclassified four wild-type C. glabrata as resistant. Based on a large data set from a single center, the use of AM3-MIC testing for caspofungin looks promising in identifying non-wild-type C. albicans, C. tropicalis and P. kudiravzevii isolates, but additional multicenter comparison is mandatory to conclude on the possible superiority of AM3-MIC testing compared to the EUCAST method.
Far-infrared images and photometry are presented for 201 Luminous and Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies LIRGs: log (L sub(IR)/L sub(middot in circle)) = 11.00-11.99, ULIRGs: log (L sub(IR)/L sub(middot ...in circle)) = 12.00-12.99, in the Great Observatories All-Sky LIRG Survey (GOALS), based on observations with the Herschel Space Observatory Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS) and the Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (SPIRE) instruments. The image atlas displays each GOALS target in the three PACS bands (70, 100, and 160 mu m) and the three SPIRE bands (250, 350, and 500 mu m), optimized to reveal structures at both high and low surface brightness levels, with images scaled to simplify comparison of structures in the same physical areas of ~100 x 100 kpc super(2). Flux densities of companion galaxies in merging systems are provided where possible, depending on their angular separation and the spatial resolution in each passband, along with integrated system fluxes (sum of components). This data set constitutes the imaging and photometric component of the GOALS Herschel OT1 observing program, and is complementary to atlases presented for the Hubble Space Telescope, Spitzer Space Telescope, and Chandra X-ray Observatory. Collectively, these data will enable a wide range of detailed studies of active galactic nucleus and starburst activity within the most luminous infrared galaxies in the local universe.
