The aim of this study was to determine whether the characteristics of esophageal symptoms may be of diagnostic utility in distinguishing dysphagia of various causes. Included in the study were a ...total of 499 patients with three types of dysphagia: 234 with dysphagia related to an obstructive lesion in the esophagus, 162 with dysphagia related to disturbed esophageal motility, and 103 with dysphagia who had no demonstrable structural or motor abnormalities in the esophagus. In the first part of the study, the initial esophageal symptoms of 402 patients with dysphagia were retrospectively reviewed and analyzed with use of a stepwise logistic regression. This analysis led to development of models that could distinguish among the various diagnostic groups of dysphagia. In the second segment of the study, these models were validated in a prospective assessment that involved 97 patients with dysphagia. In the third part of the study, the models were further refined by using data from all 499 patients from the first two parts. The results presented herein suggest that a subset of selected esophageal symptoms can distinguish among diagnostically identified groups of dysphagia. The discriminate models presented rely on a few easily determined clinical variables and hence are practical and potentially useful in the evaluation of undifferentiated dysphagia.

A new class of tricyclic nucleosides in which the aglycon has a linear 6:5:6 geometry has been synthesized using certain pyrrolo2,3-dpyrimidine nucleosides as the starting materials. An ...adenosine-adenosine analogue (12) has been prepared from 6-aminotoyocamycin using two different synthetic routes. An adenosine-guanosine analogue (4) and several adenosine-6-mercaptopurine ribonucleoside-type tricyclic nucleoside derivatives have also been synthesized. Structural assignments have been based on 1H NMR spectral studies, as well as an unequivocal chemical proof of structure. An interesting chemical shift for the 2' hydrogen of certain tricyclic nucleosides was observed and is discussed. The in vitro cytotoxicity of these nucleosides against leukemia L-1210 has been determined. The in vivo evaluation of these tricyclic nucleosides against mouse leukemia will also be discussed.
The authors describe a design methodology which uses the functional compiler concept to generate the main IF components of a direct sequence binary phase shift keying spread spectrum (DS BPSK SS) ...transceiver. Three functional compilers are described: a Costas loop generator, a direct digital frequency synthesizer generator, and a Gold sequence pseudorandom number generator. Each compiler automatically generates a digital VLSI implementation for a given set of system specifications. Three 1.2- mu m CMOS chips were automatically generated, fabricated, and tested. These chips form a chip set to be used in a prototype DS BPSK SS transceiver operating at a chip rate of 12.7 MHz and an input data rate of 100 kb/s.< >

The Proteus is a highly parallel MIMD, multiple instruction, multiple-data machine, optimized for large granularity tasks. The system is designed to use 256 to 1024 RISC processors. Computer vision ...algorithms consist of sub-algorithms, which can be executed in parallel. Advanced software system for partitioning, scheduling, development, and execution of tasks can utilize this fact in a data flow programming paradigm to increase throughput. The authors describe how these modules interact with each other such that permit the efficient control of large grained parallelism without having to handle the general concurrency problem.
