ABSTRACT
The study of gamma-ray blazars is usually hindered due to the lack of information on their redshifts and on their low-energy photon fields. This information is key to understand the effect ...on the gamma-ray absorption due to either extragalactic background light and/or intrinsic absorption and emission processes. All this information has also an impact on the determination of the location of the emitting region within the relativistic jets. In this work, a new optical spectroscopic characterization is presented for three gamma-ray blazars: S4 0954+65, TXS 1515−273, and RX J0812.0+0237. For all the three targets, the redshift determination is successful, and for the first time in the case of TXS 1515−273 and RX J0812.0+0237. Their classification as BL Lac type is confirmed based on these new optical spectra. For S4 0954+65 (z = 0.3694 ± 0.0011), an estimation on the disc, broad-line region, and torus luminosities is performed based on the observed optical emission lines. The results from this study are compatible with the nature of S4 0954+65 as a transitional blazar. In the case of TXS 1515−273 (z = 0.1281 ± 0.0004), although its optical spectrum is dominated by the continuum emission from the jet, applying the pPXF technique, the stellar population can be unveiled and is compatible with an old and metallic population. It is also the case of RX J0812.0+0237 (z = 0.1721 ± 0.0002). Moreover, this work confirms that the optical spectrum from RX J0812.0+0237 is compatible with an extreme blazar classification.

This paper aims to examine the phenomenon of overqualification by confronting two distinct notions surrounding what constitutes a praiseworthy achievement. On the one hand, the model that operates de ...facto in the contemporary labor market understands the notion of achievement in instrumental, competitive and individual terms. On the other hand, another model, which lays the foundation for workers’ demands for recognition, is wider than the former one and considers workers’ qualifications as standalone achievements. In my view, the experience of overqualification as misrecognition is based on the huge and ever-increasing amount of effort and resources that individuals must invest into their education and training processes, as well as on the fact that social institutions publicly and explicitly regulate, encourage and promote these processes. I conclude with a brief analysis of the main structural cause of this mismatch between demanded and obtained recognition, namely, the system is unable to generate enough social esteem to proportionally recognize the capacities that the system itself pushes workers to develop.
ABSTRACT
New optical photometric, spectroscopic, and imaging polarimetry data are combined with publicly available data to study some of the physical properties of the two hydrogen-poor superluminous ...supernovae (SLSNe) SN 2021bnw and SN 2021fpl. For each SLSN, the best-fitting parameters obtained from the magnetar model with Modular Open-Source Fitter for Transients do not depart from the range of parameter obtained on other SLSNe discussed in the literature. A spectral analysis with SYN++ shows that SN 2021bnw is a W type, fast evolver, while SN 2021fpl is a 15bn type, slow evolver. The analysis of the polarimetry data obtained on SN 2021fpl at four epochs (+1.8, +20.6, +34.1, and +43.0 d, rest frame) shows >3σ polarization detections in the range of 0.8–1 per cent. A comparison of the spectroscopy data suggests that SN 2021fpl underwent a spectral transition a bit earlier than SN 2015bn, during which, similarly, it could have underwent a polarization transition. The analysis of the polarimetry data obtained on SN 2021bnw does not show any departure from symmetry of the photosphere at an empirical diffusion time-scale of ≈2 (+81.1 d rest frame). This result is consistent with those on the sample of W-type SLSN observed at empirical diffusion time-scale ≤ 1 with that technique, even though it is not clear the effect of limited spectral windows varying from one object to the other. Measurements at higher empirical diffusion time-scale may be needed to see any departure from symmetry as it is discussed in the literature for SN 2017egm.
ABSTRACT
The emission from the relativistic jets in blazars usually outshines their host galaxies, challenging the determination of their distances and the characterization of the stellar population. ...The situation becomes more favourable in the case of the extreme blazars (EHBLs), for which the bulk of the emission of the relativistic jets is emitted at higher energies, unveiling the optical emission from the host galaxy. The distance determination is fundamental for the study of the intrinsic characteristics of the blazars, especially to estimate the intrinsic gamma-ray spectra distorted due to the interaction with the extragalactic background light. In this work, we report on the properties of 2WHSP J073326.7+515354 host galaxy in the optical band, which is one of the few EHBLs detected at TeV energies. We present the first measurement of the distance of the source, z = 0.065 04 ± 0.000 02 (velocity dispersion $\sigma =237 \pm 9\, \mathrm{km s^{-1}}$). We also perform a detailed study of the stellar population of its host galaxy. We find that the mass-weighted mean stellar age is $11.72\pm 0.06\, \mathrm{Gyr}$ and the mean metallicity M/H = 0.159 ± 0.016. In addition, a morphological study of the host galaxy is also carried out. The surface brightness distribution is modelled by a composition of a dominant classical bulge (Re = 3.77 ± 1 arcsec or equivalently 4.74 kpc) plus an unresolved source which corresponds to the active nucleus. The black hole mass is estimated using both the mass relation with the velocity dispersion and the absolute magnitude from the bulge yielding comparable results: $(4.8\pm 0.9)\times 10^8$ and $(3.7\pm 1.0)\times 10^8\, \mathrm{ M}_{\odot }$, respectively.
ABSTRACT
Optical imaging polarimetry was conducted on the hydrogen poor superluminous supernova 2020znr during three phases after maximum light (≈ +34 d, +288 d, and +289 d). After instrumental and ...interstellar polarization correction, all measurements are consistent with null-polarization detection. Modelling the light curve with a magnetar spin-down model shows that SN2020znr has similar magnetar and ejecta parameters to other SLSNe. A comparison of the best-fitting values discussed in the literature on SN 2017egm and SN 2015bn, two hydrogen poor SLSNe showing an increase of polarization after maximum light, suggests that SN 2020znr has higher mass ejecta that may prevent access to the geometry of the inner ejecta with optical polarimetry. The combined information provided by spectroscopy and light-curve analysis of type I SLSNe may be an interesting avenue to categorize the polarization properties of this class of transients. This approach would require to expand the sample of SLSNe polarimetry data currently available with early and late time epochs new measurements.
A novel architecture of an all-optical flip-flop is proposed. The architecture is comprised of a single semiconductor optical amplifier-based Mach-Zehnder interferometer with a feedback loop. The ...simulation results show that low switching energies (<2-pJ pulses) and fast operation (<1-ns response delays) may be achieved.
Over the last century, psychological discourse ranks among the main cultural forces in Western societies. As such, it undoubtedly exerts considerable influence on how we express, demand, struggle ...for, and conceive of recognition. However, since psychology is far from being a monolithic discipline, said influence is exerted in non-univocal, sometimes contradictory ways. In this paper, I explore this heterogeneous impact by contrasting the idea of recognition underlying two popular psychological schools. On the one hand, psychoanalysis’ emphasis on trauma stresses our dependence on being recognized by others, vindicates the importance of communication, and contributes to redefining the status of victim. On the other hand, positive psychology’s advocacy for autonomous self-fulfillment seems to downsize the importance of recognition, and of the struggle for it, based on a statistical, morally-neutral approach.
The purpose of this study was to develop data on the risk of listeriosis to support a science-based strategy for addressing Listeria monocytogenes in foods in the United States. Eight categories of ...ready-to-eat foods were collected over 14 to 23 months from retail markets at Maryland and northern California FoodNet sites. The product categories included luncheon meats, deli salads, fresh soft "Hispanic-style" cheeses, bagged salads, blue-veined and soft mold-ripened cheeses, smoked seafood, and seafood salads. The presence and levels of L. monocytogenes in the samples were determined by rapid DNA-based assays in combination with culture methods. Of 31,705 samples tested, 577 were positive. The overall prevalence was 1.82%. with prevalences ranging from 0.17 to 4.7% among the product categories. L. monocytogenes levels in the positive samples varied from <0.3 MPN (most probable number) per g to 1.5 x 10(5) CFU/g, with 402 samples having levels of <0.3 MPN/g, 21 samples having levels of >10(2) CFU/g, and the rest of the samples having intermediate levels. No obvious trends with respect to seasonality were observed. Significant differences (P < 0.05) between the sampling sites were found, with higher prevalences for threes categories in northern California and for two categories in Maryland. Significantly (P < 0.001) higher prevalences were found for in-store-packaged samples than for manufacturer-packaged samples of luncheon meats, deli salads, and seafood salads, while 16 of the 21 samples with higher counts were manufacturer packaged. The data collected in this study help to fill gaps in the knowledge about the occurrence of L. monocytogenes in foods, and this new information should be useful in the assessment of the risk posed by L. monocytogenes to consumers.
