The NOvA experiment has seen a 4.4σ signal of ν¯e appearance in a 2 GeV ν¯μ beam at a distance of 810 km. Using 12.33×1020 protons on target delivered to the Fermilab NuMI neutrino beamline, the ...experiment recorded 27 ν¯μ→ν¯e candidates with a background of 10.3 and 102 ν¯μ→ν¯μ candidates. This new antineutrino data are combined with neutrino data to measure the parameters |Δm322|=2.48−0.06+0.11×10−3 eV2/c4 and sin2θ23 in the ranges from (0.53–0.60) and (0.45–0.48) in the normal neutrino mass hierarchy. The data exclude most values near δCP=π/2 for the inverted mass hierarchy by more than 3σ and favor the normal neutrino mass hierarchy by 1.9σ and θ23 values in the upper octant by 1.6σ.
We report results from the first search for sterile neutrinos mixing with active neutrinos through a reduction in the rate of neutral-current interactions over a baseline of 810 km between the NOvA ...detectors. Analyzing a 14-kton detector equivalent exposure of 6.05×1020 protons-on-target in the NuMI beam at Fermilab, we observe 95 neutral-current candidates at the Far Detector compared with 83.5±9.7(stat)±9.4(syst) events predicted assuming mixing only occurs between active neutrino species. No evidence for νμ→νs transitions is found. Interpreting these results within a 3+1 model, we place constraints on the mixing angles θ24<20.8° and θ34<31.2° at the 90% C.L. for 0.05 eV2≤Δm412≤0.5 eV2, the range of mass splittings that produce no significant oscillations over the Near Detector baseline.
Results are reported from an improved measurement of ν_{μ}→ν_{e} transitions by the NOvA experiment. Using an exposure equivalent to 6.05×10^{20} protons on target, 33 ν_{e} candidates are observed ...with a background of 8.2±0.8 (syst.). Combined with the latest NOvA ν_{μ} disappearance data and external constraints from reactor experiments on sin^{2}2θ_{13}, the hypothesis of inverted mass hierarchy with θ_{23} in the lower octant is disfavored at greater than 93% C.L. for all values of δ_{CP}.
Using data collected with the CLEO detector operating at the CESR e+e- collider at sqrts=3.97-4.26 GeV, we investigate 15 charmonium decay modes of the psi(4040), psi(4160), and Y(4260) resonances. ...We confirm, at 11 sigma significance, the BABAR Y(4260)-->pi+pi- J/psi discovery, make the first observation of Y(4260)--> pi(0)pi(0) J/psi (5.1 sigma), and find the first evidence for Y(4260)-->K+K- J/psi(3.7 sigma). We measure e+e- cross sections at sqrts=4.26 GeV as sigma(pi+pi- J/psi)=58(+12)(-10)+/-4 pb, sigma(pi(0)pi(0) J/psi)=23(+12)(-8)+/-1 pb, and sigma(K+K- J/psi)=9(+9)(-5)+/-1 pb, in which the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. Upper limits are placed on other decay rates from all three resonances.
Summary Objective We aimed to characterize severity and occurrence of knee osteoarthritis (OA), and effects of age, sex, body mass, and reproductive status on population-level normal variation in ...this condition in the baboon, a natural model of human knee OA. Methods We visually inspected articular cartilage of distal right femora of 464 baboons (309 females, 155 males) and assigned an OA severity score (comparable to a modified Outerbridge score) from 1 = unaffected to 4 = advanced OA (eburnation). Presence/absence of osteophytes was recorded. We tested for significant effects of age, sex, body mass, and, in females, reproductive status (pre-, peri-, or post-menopausal) on OA. When appropriate, analyses were repeated on an age-matched subset (153 of each sex). Results Knee OA was more frequent and severe in older animals ( P < 0.0001), but significant age variation was apparent in each severity grade. Sex differences within the younger and older age groups suggest that males develop knee OA earlier, but females progress more quickly to advanced disease. There is a strong relationship between reproductive status and OA severity grade in females ( P = 0.0005) with more severe OA in peri- and post-menopausal female baboons, as in humans. Conclusions Idiopathic knee OA is common in adult baboons. Occurrence and severity are influenced strongly by reproductive status in females, and by sex with regard to patterns of disease progression – providing an animal model to investigate sex-specific variation in OA susceptibility in which the environmental heterogeneity inherent in human populations is vastly reduced.

The NOvA collaboration blended and delivered 8.8kt (2.72M gal) of liquid scintillator as the active detector medium to its near and far detectors. The composition of this scintillator was ...specifically developed to satisfy NOvA׳s performance requirements. A rigorous set of quality control procedures was put in place to verify that the incoming components and the blended scintillator met these requirements. The scintillator was blended commercially in Hammond, IN. The scintillator was shipped to the NOvA detectors using dedicated stainless steel tanker trailers cleaned to food grade.
Using 20.7 pb(-1) of e(+)e(-) annihilation data taken at sq.rt(r) = 3.671 GeV with the CLEO-c detector, precision measurements of the electromagnetic form factors of the charged pion, charged kaon, ...and proton have been made for timelike momentum transfer of |Q(2)| = 13.48 GeV(2) by the reaction e(+)e(-) --> h(+)h(-). The measurements are the first ever with identified pions and kaons of |Q(2)| > 4 GeV(2), with the results F(13.48 GeV(2)) = 0.075 +/- 0.008(stat) +/- 0.005(syst) and F(K)(13.48 GeV(2)) = 0.063 +/- 0.004(stat) +/- 0.001(syst). The result for the proton, assuming G(p)(E) = G(p)(M), is G(p)(M)(13.48 GeV(2)) = 0.014 +/- 0.002(stat) +/- 0.001(syst), which is in agreement with earlier results.

We describe the design, construction and performance of a Ring Imaging Cherenkov Detector (RICH) constructed to identify charged particles in the CLEO experiment. Cherenkov radiation occurs in LiF ...crystals, both planar and ones with a novel “sawtooth”-shaped exit surface. Photons in the wavelength interval 135–165
nm are detected using multi-wire chambers filled with a mixture of methane gas and triethylamine vapor. Excellent

The sensitivity of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) to neutrino oscillation is determined, based on a full simulation, reconstruction, and event selection of the far detector and a ...full simulation and parameterized analysis of the near detector. Detailed uncertainties due to the flux prediction, neutrino interaction model, and detector effects are included. DUNE will resolve the neutrino mass ordering to a precision of 5
