We have developed a model in which the quantum fluctuations of the proton structure are characterised by hot spots, whose number grows with decreasing Bjorken-x. Our model reproduces the F2(x,Q2) ...data from HERA at the relevant scale, as well as the exclusive and dissociative J/ψ photoproduction data from H1 and ALICE. Our model predicts that for Wγp≈500 GeV, the dissociative J/ψ cross section reaches a maximum and then decreases steeply with energy, which is in qualitatively good agreement to a recent observation that the dissociative J/ψ background in the exclusive J/ψ sample measured in photoproduction by ALICE decreases as energy increases. Our prediction provides a clear signature for gluon saturation at LHC energies.
The study of intestinal microbiota in vector insects like triatomines is paramount in parasitology because many parasitic species inhabit the vector's gut. Although knowledge on the gut microbiota in ...various vectors of the parasitic flagellate Trypanosoma cruzi has grown, research efforts have focused on South American triatomines. This study reports the isolation of bacterial microbiota in the anterior and posterior gut of Meccus pallidipennis (a triatomine species endemic to Mexico) by culture, as well as its identification by phenotypic and biochemical tests and its quantification by counting colony‐forming units. The study was performed on fifth‐instar nymph and adult specimens of M. pallidipennis, either laboratory‐bred or collected in the field and either infected or not with T. cruzi. Overall, 17 bacterial species were identified, with the genera Bacillus and Staphylococcus being the most prevalent regardless of the origin of the insects. No differences were observed in the number of bacterial species in the gut of laboratory‐bred and field‐collected insects, neither with respect to life stage or infection status. In general, the Shannon‐Weaver diversity index was higher in non‐infected insects than in infected ones. Further studies using non‐culture methods are required to determine whether bacterial species diversity is modified by laboratory breeding.

Solutions of the target-rapidity Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK) equation are studied considering, for the first time, the complete impact-parameter dependence, including the orientation of the dipole with ...respect to the impact-parameter vector. In our previous work 1 it has been demonstrated that the spurious Coulomb tails could be tamed using the collinearly-improved kernel and an appropriate initial condition in the projectile-rapidity BK equation. Introducing a different interpretation of the evolution variable, the target-rapidity formulation of the BK equation brings non-locality in rapidity and a kernel modification, removing the term that previously helped to suppress the Coulomb tails. To address this newly emerged non-locality, three different prescriptions are explored here to take into account the rapidities preceding the initial condition. Two of these approaches induce mild Coulomb tails, while the other is free from this effect within the studied rapidity range. The range is chosen to correspond to that of interest for existing and future experiments. To demonstrate that this set up can be used for phenomenological studies, the obtained solutions are used to compute the F2 structure function of the proton and the diffractive photo- and electro-production of J/ψ off protons. The predictions agree well with HERA data, confirming that the target-rapidity Balitsky-Kovchegov equation with the full impact-parameter dependence is a viable tool to study the small Bjorken-x limit of perturbative QCD at current facilities like RHIC and LHC as well as in future colliders like the EIC.
The coherent photonuclear production of a J/ψ vector meson at the LHC has been computed using two different sets of solutions of the impact-parameter dependent Balitsky-Kovchegov equation. The ...nuclear dipole scattering amplitudes are obtained either from (i) solutions for this process off proton targets coupled with a Glauber-Gribov prescription, or (ii) from solutions obtained with an initial condition representing the nucleus. These approaches predict different cross sections, which are compared with existing data from ultra-peripheral collisions at the LHC. The latter approach seems to better describe current measurements. Future LHC data should be precise enough to select one of the two approaches as the correct one.
We found rat central auditory neurons to fire action potentials in a precise sequence of mini-bursts before the age of hearing onset. This stereotyped pattern was initiated by hair cells in the ...cochlea, which trigger brief bursts of action potentials in auditory neurons each time they fire a Ca2+ spike. By generating theta-like activity, hair cells may limit the influence of synaptic depression in developing auditory circuits and promote consolidation of synapses.

Although barriers related to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) youth's experiences accessing sexual health services have been examined in detail, research into the experiences and ...perceptions of clinicians providing these services has been conspicuously absent. The aim of this article is to explore the perceptions and experiences of clinicians providing sexual health services for LGBTQ youth. Drawing on in-depth, semi-structured interviews, this study examines 24 clinicians' experiences providing sexual health services to LGBTQ youth in five communities in British Columbia, Canada. Our findings reveal how many clinicians provide services to LGBTQ youth with a lack of cultural competency--either implicitly (e.g. by describing heteronormative practices) or explicitly (e.g. by expressing frustration that they had not been sufficiently provided with appropriate training related to LGBTQ youth sexual health). Institutional norms and values were identified as the dominant barriers in the effective provision of LGBTQ-tailored services. Many clinicians find themselves unprepared to provide culturally competent sexual health services that have both the capacity to address individual-level issues (e.g. promoting condom use) while considering (and adapting services to) the broader socio-cultural and structural conditions that can render LGBTQ youth socially vulnerable.
Some conservation prioritization methods are based on the assumption that conservation needs overwhelm current resources and not all species can be conserved; therefore, a conservation triage scheme ...(i.e., when the system is overwhelmed, species should be divided into three groups based on likelihood of survival, and efforts should be focused on those species in the group with the best survival prospects and reduced or denied to those in the group with no survival prospects and to those in the group not needing special efforts for their conservation) is necessary to guide resource allocation. We argue that this decision‐making strategy is not appropriate because resources are not as limited as often assumed, and it is not evident that there are species that cannot be conserved. Small population size alone, for example, does not doom a species to extinction; plants, reptiles, birds, and mammals offer examples. Although resources dedicated to conserving all threatened species are insufficient at present, the world's economic resources are vast, and greater resources could be dedicated toward species conservation. The political framework for species conservation has improved, with initiatives such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals and other international agreements, funding mechanisms such as The Global Environment Facility, and the rise of many nongovernmental organizations with nimble, rapid‐response small grants programs. For a prioritization system to allow no extinctions, zero extinctions must be an explicit goal of the system. Extinction is not inevitable, and should not be acceptable. A goal of no human‐induced extinctions is imperative given the irreversibility of species loss.

We present basic statistics for all supernovae discovered by the All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN) during its first year-and-a-half of operations, spanning 2013 and 2014. We also ...present the same information for all other bright (mV less than or equal to 17), spectroscopically confirmed supernovae discovered from 2014 May 1 through the end of 2014, providing a comparison to the ASAS-SN sample starting from the point where ASAS-SN became operational in both hemispheres. In addition, we present collected redshifts and near-UV through IR magnitudes, where available, for all host galaxies of the bright supernovae in both samples. This work represents a comprehensive catalogue of bright supernovae and their hosts from multiple professional and amateur sources, allowing for population studies that were not previously possible because the all-sky emphasis of ASAS-SN redresses many previously existing biases. In particular, ASAS-SN systematically finds bright supernovae closer to the centres of host galaxies than either other professional surveys or amateurs, a remarkable result given ASAS-SN's poorer angular resolution. This is the first of a series of yearly papers on bright supernovae and their hosts that will be released by the ASAS-SN team.
We predict that the onset of gluon saturation can be uniquely identified using incoherent J/ψ production in Pb–Pb collisions at currently accessible energies of the LHC. The diffractive incoherent ...photo-production of a J/ψ vector meson off a hadron provides information on the partonic structure of the hadron. Within the Good-Walker approach it specifically measures the variance over possible target configurations of the hadronic colour field. For this process then, gluon saturation sets in when the cross section reaches a maximum, as a function of the centre-of-mass energy of the photon-hadron system (W), and then decreases. We benchmark the energy-dependent hot-spot model against data from HERA and the LHC and demonstrate a good description of the available data. We show that the study of the energy dependence of the incoherent production of J/ψ allows us to pinpoint the onset of saturation effects by selecting the region of Mandelstam-t around 1 GeV2 where the contribution of hot spots is dominant. We predict the onset of saturation in a Pb target to occur for W around a few hundred GeV. This can be measured with current data in ultra-peripheral Pb–Pb collisions at the LHC.
Skin cancer is a public health problem due to its high incidence. Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is the main etiological agent of this disease. Photochemoprotection involves the use of substances to ...avoid damage caused by UV exposure. The aim of this work was to determine the phytochemical fingerprint and photochemoprotective effect against UVB radiation-induced skin damage such as erythema and carcinogenesis of H. mociniana methanolic extract (MEHm). The chemical composition of the MEHm was analysed by LC/ESI-MS/MS. Three quercetin derivatives, two pectinolides, and two caffeic acid derivatives were identified in the methanolic extract. MEHm has antioxidant effect and it is not cytotoxic in HaCaT cells. Phytochemicals from H. mociniana have a photochemopreventive effect because they absorb UV light and protect HaCaT cells from UVR-induced cell death. Also, in SKH-1 mice -acute exposure-, it decreased erythema formation, modulating the inflammatory response, reduced the skin damage according to histological analysis and diminished p53 expression. Finally, MEHm protects from photocarcinogenesis by reducing the incidence and multiplicity of skin carcinomas in SKH-1 mice exposed chronically to UVB radiation.
