Strong site effects were observed during the two M^sub W^ 5.7 and M^sub W^ 6.0 main shocks of the Colfiorito seismic crisis which occured on September 26, 1997 in Umbria-Marche (Central Italy). The ...most obvious indications of these effects are the dramatic differences in damage shown by buildings of similar construction in neighboring villages.Such observations were specifically made in the Verchiano valley in the fault area, 15 km south of Colfiorito where the Verchiano village and the Colle and Camino hamlets were heavily damaged (MCS intensity IX-X) since the first main shock of 1997/09/26,while in contrast, the Curasci village located 2 km eastwards remains almost intact. In order to study the anomalous ground motion amplifications in this area, an array of 11, 3-components seismo- and accelero-meters was set up during the 1997/10/20-24 period, extending from the western side of the valley, up to the top of Mount San Salvatore, going accross the Colle and Curasci hamlets.During the experiment, 67 aftershocks enlightened the valley from the Colfiorito (10 km north) and the Sellano (6 km south) active swarms.Seismic refraction experiments were conducted at the same time in the 500 m wide, 1500 m long Verchiano valley in order to determine the thickness and main characteristics of the alluvial infilling. The main results are: (i) compared to the valley side ground motion, and for all the events, recordings in the central part of the valley (piana di Verchiano) show relative amplification of 10 with a clear lengthening of the seismogram duration by a factor of 2 - (ii) broad band relative amplification of 6-8 is also clearly identified at the top of the Mount San Salvatore overhanging the valley - (iii) any of the site effect measurements done explains by itself the strongly contrasted damage observed at Colle and Curasci: i.e. the modification of the near-field radiation pattern by interaction with the free heterogeneous surface may have induced local shadow zones that saved Curasci.PUBLICATION ABSTRACT
To evaluate the rate of pre-cancerous and cancerous endometrial lesions in hysterectomy during vaginal reconstructive pelvic surgery.
In this retrospective and continuous study, a vaginal procedure including reconstructive pelvic surgery with vaginal mesh, hysterectomy and adnexectomy was performed in 152 patients between April 2001 and January 2006. An ultrasonography evaluation was done before surgery. A histopathological analysis of uterus, ovaries and tubes was also performed.
In the analysis of 136 cases, precancerous and cancerous lesions have been diagnosed while ultrasonography or cervical smear were normal: 2 (1.4%) endocervical dysplasia, 1 (0.7%) cervical epidermoid carcinoma, 10 (7.35%) endometrial complex non-atypical hyperplasia, 7 (5.1%) endometrial atypical hyperplasia and 2 (1.4%) endometrioid endometrial carcinoma. There was not any cancerous lesions in tubes or ovaries. At 10months, mesh exposure was low at 2.9% (four cases).
The important rate of cancerous and precancerous lesions raise the question of hysterectomy or hysteroscopy and endometrial biopsy in case of uterine preservation during a vaginal reconstructive pelvic surgery.
We found extensive evidence that the vertical ground accelerations produced during the largest shock (M = 6.0) of the 1997 Umbria-Marche earthquake sequence exceeded 1g in two areas close to the ...heavily-damaged villages of Annifo and Colle Croce. This evidence comes from the striking observation of thousands of freshly fractured and broken rocks and stones in these areas. Some of the broken stones lie isolated on soft detritic soil while others had been previously piled up, probably a long time agoto clear the fields for farming. The freshness of the cuts and fractures and the consistency of the observations for thousands of rocks and stones in these areas indicate that these rocks were thrown upwards during the earthquake, with breakage occurring at the time of impact. Ground motion calculations consistent with the static deformation inferred from GPS and interferometry data, show that the broken stones and rocks are found in the zone where the strongest shaking took place during the earthquake and that most of the shaking there was vertical.PUBLICATION ABSTRACT
Reliable knowledge of soil mechanical properties, especially shear wave velocities, is important to estimate useful parameters in earthquake engineering (Vs30, response spectra, etc.) and to allow ...reliable numerical prediction of strong ground motion at frequencies of interest in earthquake engineering. Shear-wave velocity structure can be inferred either from borehole measurements (e.g. cross-hole or down-hole measurements) or from active or passive techniques using body- or surface-waves, respectively. Recent studies have also shown that ellipticity of Rayleigh waves can be extracted from microtremor measurements and subsequently jointly inverted with phase velocities in order to get reliable shear wave velocity profile down to seismic bedrock. In this paper, we present shear-wave profiles derived from joint inversion of phase velocity and ellipticity of Rayleigh waves obtained from microtremor array measurements at five different sites in Caracas. Phase velocities and ellipticities are extracted by using microtremor measurements. Derived shear-wave velocity profiles are consistent with available geotechnical and geophysical information.
This report of the Swiss Seismological Service summarizes the seismic activity in Switzerland and surrounding regions during 2003. During this period, 532 earthquakes and 118 quarry blasts were ...detected and located in the region under consideration. With 30 events with ML ≥ 2.5, the seismic activity in the year 2003 was slightly above the average over the last 29 years. As in previous years, most of the seismic activity was concentrated in the Valais and in Graubünden. In addition, several earthquakes occurred along the northern front of the Alps. The strongest event, with ML 4.0 and epicentral intensity V, occurred in the area of Urnerboden, on the border between the cantons Uri and Glarus. Two earthquakes with ML 3.9 occurred in the Valais near the town of Salgesch and south of the Sanetsch Pass. In Graubünden, the Sertig valley south of Davos was the site of a sequence of 51 earthquakes that included three events with magnitudes between ML 3.6 and 3.9.

In this paper, we present MUSIQUE, an algorithm designed to analyze seismic signals recorded by arrays of three-component seismic sensors. Using the original MUSIC algorithm, azimuth and slowness (or ...velocity) of incident waves are estimated. The quaternion-MUSIC algorithm is then used to characterize the polarization properties of the waves. In this way, Love and Rayleigh waves are distinguished and their respective properties retrieved. This allows the characterization of the seismic wave field and the soil structure underneath the seismic array, which are important parameters for the estimation of seismic hazards.
