Coffee is rich in compounds such as polyphenols, caffeine, diterpenes, melanoidins and trigonelline, which can stimulate brain activity. Therefore, the possible association of coffee ...consumption with cognition is of considerable research interest. In this paper, we assess the association of coffee consumption and total dietary caffeine intake with the risk of poor cognitive functioning in a population of elderly overweight/obese adults with metabolic syndrome (MetS).
Methods
PREDIMED-plus study participants who completed the Mini-Mental State Examination test (MMSE) (
n
= 6427; mean age = 65 ± 5 years) or a battery of neuropsychological tests were included in this cross-sectional analysis. Coffee consumption and total dietary caffeine intake were assessed at baseline using a food frequency questionnaire. Logistic regression models were fitted to evaluate the association between total, caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee consumption or total dietary caffeine intake and cognitive impairment.
Results
Total coffee consumers and caffeinated coffee consumers had better cognitive functioning than non-consumers when measured by the MMSE and after adjusting for potential confounders (OR 0.63; 95% CI 0.44–0.90 and OR 0.56; 95% CI 0.38–0.83, respectively). Results were similar when cognitive performance was measured using the Clock Drawing Test (CDT) and Trail Making Test B (TMT-B). These associations were not observed for decaffeinated coffee consumption. Participants in the highest tertile of total dietary caffeine intake had lower odds of poor cognitive functioning than those in the reference tertile when screened by the MMSE (OR 0.64; 95% CI 0.47–0.87) or other neurophysiological tests evaluating a variety of cognitive domains (i.e., CDT and TMT-A).
Conclusions
Coffee consumption and total dietary caffeine intake were associated with better cognitive functioning as measured by various neuropsychological tests in a Mediterranean cohort of elderly individuals with MetS.

Extensively drug-resistant (XDR) Acinetobacter spp. have emerged as a cause of nosocomial infections, especially under conditions of intensive care. Unfortunately, resistance to colistin is ...increasing and there is a need for new therapeutic options. We aimed to study the effect of some novel combinations against XDR Acinetobacter baumannii in an in vitro pharmacokinetics-pharmacodynamics (PK/PD) model. Three nonrelated clinical strains of XDR A. baumannii were investigated. Antibiotic-simulated regimens were colistin at 3 MU every 8 h (q8h) (first dose, 6 MU), daptomycin at 10 mg/kg of body weight q24h, imipenem at 1 g q8h, and ertapenem at 1 g q24h. Combination regimens included colistin plus daptomycin, colistin plus imipenem, and imipenem plus ertapenem. Samples were obtained at 0, 1, 2, 4, 8, and 24 h. Among the single-agent regimens, only the colistin regimen resulted in significant reductions in log10 CFU per milliliter compared to the control for all the strains tested. Although colistin achieved bactericidal activity at 4 h, it was not able to reach the limit of detection (1 log10 CFU/ml). One strain had significant regrowth at 24 h without the emergence of resistance. Daptomycin-colistin combinations led to a significant reduction in levels of log10 CFU per milliliter that were better than those achieved with colistin as a single-agent regimen, reaching the limit of detection at 24 h against all the strains. The combination of imipenem plus ertapenem outperformed the colistin regimen, although the results did not reach the limit of detection, with significant regrowth at 24 h. Similarly, colistin-plus-imipenem combinations reduced the levels of log10 CFU per milliliter at 8 h, with significant regrowth at 24 h but with development of resistance to colistin. We have shown some potentially useful alternatives for the treatment of extensively drug-resistant A. baumannii. Among them, the daptomycin-colistin combination was the most effective and should be investigated in future studies.
Due to the constant growth of the human population and anthropological activity, it has become necessary to use sustainable and affordable technologies that satisfy the current and future demand for ...agricultural products. Since the nutrients available to plants in the soil are limited and the need to increase the yields of the crops is desirable, the use of chemical (inorganic or NPK) fertilizers has been widespread over the last decades, causing a nutrient shortage due to their misuse and exploitation, and because of the uncontrolled use of these products, there has been a latent environmental and health problem globally. For this reason, green biotechnology based on the use of microalgae biomass is proposed as a sustainable alternative for development and use as soil improvers for crop cultivation and phytoremediation. This review explores the long-term risks of using chemical fertilizers for both human health (cancer and hypoxia) and the environment (eutrophication and erosion), as well as the potential of microalgae biomass to substitute current fertilizer using different treatments on the biomass and their application methods for the implementation on the soil; additionally, the biomass can be a source of carbon mitigation and wastewater treatment in agro-industrial processes.
Abstract Introduction Over recent years we have witnessed an increase in the resistance of microorganisms to the available antimicrobials and a decrease in the number of new antimicrobials. ...Fosfomycin is a safe and cheap broad-spectrum antibiotic which has shown very promising results in combination therapy, mainly against gram-negative microorganisms. Little is known, however, about its clinical efficacy against gram-positive microorganisms. Methods We performed a retrospective review of all patients with severe gram-positive infections who received fosfomycin as part of their treatment from 2011 to 2017. We also performed in vitro time-kill assays to study the behaviour of fosfomycin with different antimicrobials against two strains of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and two strains of methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA). Results Seventy-five patients were treated with different fosfomycin combinations. Among them, 61 (81%) were successfully treated. Daptomycin plus fosfomycin was the most effective combination. Overall, the treatment with fosfomycin was safe, and side effects were minor. There was only one major side effect that resolved after discontinuation of therapy. Time-kill studies demonstrated increased activity of fosfomycin combinations, with daptomycin–fosfomycin being the most active combination against both MRSA and MSSA strains. Conclusions Our results suggest that antimicrobial combinations including fosfomycin are an alternative and effective approach for gram-positive infections.

Candida species are the leading cause of invasive fungal infections in hospitalised patients and are the fourth most common isolates recovered from patients with bloodstream ...infection. Few data exist on risk factors for candidemia in non‐ICU patients. We performed a population‐based case‐control study to evaluate the main predictors for candidemia in non‐ICU patients.
Methods and findings
We included all non‐neutropenic, non‐critically ill and non‐surgical adult patients with candidemia between January 2010 and June 2014. Patients with positive, non‐candidal blood culture obtained at the same day (±2 days) were selected as controls. Cases and controls were matched according to hospital ward and clinical characteristics. Risk factors for candidemia were identified through a logistic regression. We included 56 candidemic and 512 bacteriemic non‐candidemic patients. Most of candidemic patients (52) had received antibiotics prior to candidemia. Among them, the 30‐day mortality rate was 34% (19/56). Multivariate analysis identified male sex, prior use of steroids, prior use of antibiotics, total parenteral nutrition and urinary catheterisation as independent predictors of candidemia. To develop the CaMed score, we rounded up weights of different risk factors as follows; total parenteral nutrition (+2), prior antibiotic therapy (+5), each of the other risk factors (+1). A score ≥ 7 identified patients at high risk of candidemia (P < 0.001; RR 29.805; CI 95% 10.652‐83.397; sensitivity 79.2, specificity 82.6%, Youden index 0,62).
Conclusions
Our set of easy independent predictors of candidemia in non‐neutropenic, non‐ICU, non‐surgical patients provide a rationale for early initiation of antifungals and could reduce candidemia‐related mortality.
Microalgae are complex photosynthetic organisms found in marine and freshwater environments that produce valuable metabolites. Microalgae-derived metabolites have gained remarkable attention in ...different industrial biotechnological processes and pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries due to their multiple properties, including antioxidant, anti-aging, anti-cancer, phycoimmunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial activities. These properties are recognized as promising components for state-of-the-art cosmetics and cosmeceutical formulations. Efforts are being made to develop natural, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly products that replace synthetic products. This review summarizes some potential cosmeceutical applications of microalgae-derived biomolecules, their mechanisms of action, and extraction methods.
The production of biomolecules by microalgae has a wide range of applications in the development of various materials and products, such as biodiesel, food supplements, and cosmetics. Microalgae ...biomass can be produced using waste and in a smaller space than other types of crops (e.g., soja, corn), which shows microalgae’s great potential as a source of biomass. Among the produced biomolecules of greatest interest are carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and fatty acids. In this study, the production of these biomolecules was determined in two strains of microalgae (Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Chlorella vulgaris) when exposed to different concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur. Results show a significant microalgal growth (3.69 g L−1) and carbohydrates (163 mg g−1) increase in C. reinhardtii under low nitrogen concentration. Also, higher lipids content was produced under low sulfur concentration (246 mg g−1). It was observed that sulfur variation could affect in a negative way proteins production in C. reinhardtii culture. In the case of C. vulgaris, a higher biomass production was obtained in the standard culture medium (1.37 g L−1), and under a low-phosphorus condition, C. vulgaris produced a higher lipids concentration (248 mg g−1). It was observed that a low concentration of nitrogen had a better effect on the accumulation of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) (C16-C18) in both microalgae. These results lead us to visualize the effects that the variation in macronutrients can have on the growth of microalgae and their possible utility for the production of microalgae-based subproducts.

The development of integrated applications to prevent the negative effects of prolonged sunlight exposure, usually during outdoor activities, is imperative. This study presents the functions, characteristics, and types of photolyases, their therapeutic and cosmetic applications, and additionally explores some photolyase-producing microorganisms and drug delivery systems.

Emerging pollutants (EPs) are a group ...of different contaminants, such as hormones, pesticides, heavy metals, and drugs, usually found in concentrations between the order of ng and µg per liter. The global population's daily city and agro-industrial activities release EPs into the environment. Due to the chemical nature of EPs and deficient wastewater treatment and management, they are transported to superficial and groundwater through the natural water cycle, where they can potentially cause harmful effects on living organisms. Recent efforts have focused on developing technology that allows EPs quantification and monitoring in real-time and in situ. The newly developed technology aims to provide accessible groundwater management that detects and treats EPs while avoiding their contact with living beings and their toxic effects. This review presents some of the recently reported techniques that have been applied to advance the detection of EPs in groundwater and potential technologies that can be used for EP removal.
