How the transformation of social media platforms and user-experience have redefined the entertainment industry
In a little over a decade, competing social media platforms, including YouTube, ...Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat, have given rise to a new creative industry: social media entertainment. Operating at the intersection of the entertainment and interactivity, communication and content industries, social media entertainment creators have harnessed these platforms to generate new kinds of content separate from the century-long model of intellectual property control in the traditional entertainment industry.
Social media entertainment has expanded rapidly and the traditional entertainment industry has been forced to cede significant power and influence to content creators, their fans, and subscribers. Digital platforms have created a natural market for embedded advertising, changing the worlds of marketing and communication in their wake. Combined, these factors have produced new, radically shifting demands on the entertainment industry, posing new challenges for screen regimes, media scholars, industry professionals, content creators, and audiences alike.

We use high-density single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping microarrays to demonstrate the ability to accurately and robustly determine whether individuals are in a complex genomic DNA ...mixture. We first develop a theoretical framework for detecting an individual's presence within a mixture, then show, through simulations, the limits associated with our method, and finally demonstrate experimentally the identification of the presence of genomic DNA of specific individuals within a series of highly complex genomic mixtures, including mixtures where an individual contributes less than 0.1% of the total genomic DNA. These findings shift the perceived utility of SNPs for identifying individual trace contributors within a forensics mixture, and suggest future research efforts into assessing the viability of previously sub-optimal DNA sources due to sample contamination. These findings also suggest that composite statistics across cohorts, such as allele frequency or genotype counts, do not mask identity within genome-wide association studies. The implications of these findings are discussed.

As partners in an ongoing global research initiative over the past 6 years, Queensland University of Technology Distinguished Professor Stuart Cunningham and University of Southern California ...Clinical Professor David Craig mapped the rise of two competing communication and media industries, Social Media Entertainment and Wanghong. Alongside other vanguard scholars, Cunningham and Craig identified and framed the emergence of Creator Studies, an interdisciplinary field of studies focused on the dynamics of new forms of cultural production across social media platforms from diverse fields, methods, and epistemologies. These developments are described within a picaresque auto-ethnographic account of Cunningham’s influence on the author's progression from Hollywood producer to scholar and pedagogue.
With the emergence of RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) technologies, RNA-based biomolecules hold expanded promise for their diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic applicability in various diseases, including ...cancers and infectious diseases. Detection of gene fusions and differential expression of known disease-causing transcripts by RNA-seq represent some of the most immediate opportunities. However, it is the diversity of RNA species detected through RNA-seq that holds new promise for the multi-faceted clinical applicability of RNA-based measures, including the potential of extracellular RNAs as non-invasive diagnostic indicators of disease. Ongoing efforts towards the establishment of benchmark standards, assay optimization for clinical conditions and demonstration of assay reproducibility are required to expand the clinical utility of RNA-seq.

The significance of social media entertainment lies in that, for a great many especially young viewers, this is what television is, now.
Spatial transcriptional profiling provides gene expression information within the important anatomical context of tissue architecture. This approach is well suited to characterizing solid tumors, ...which develop within a complex landscape of malignant cells, immune cells, and stroma. In a single assay, spatial transcriptional profiling can interrogate the role of spatial relationships among these cell populations as well as reveal spatial patterns of relevant oncogenic genetic events. The broad utility of this approach is reflected in the array of strategies that have been developed for its implementation as well as in the recent commercial development of several profiling platforms. The flexibility to apply these technologies to both hypothesis-driven and discovery-driven studies allows widespread applicability in research settings. This review discusses available technologies for spatial transcriptional profiling and several applications for their use in cancer research.

This article addresses the platformization of cultural production by offering a creator-centric account of industrial and governance issues in social media entertainment (SME). SME is our term for ...the emerging industry of native online cultural producers together with the platforms, intermediaries, and fan communities operating interdependently, and disruptively, alongside legacy media industries and across global media cultures. The central concern of the article is that these creators are not recognized as stakeholders in current debates both academic and policy on platform governance. The relationship between the platform behemoths and individual creators may seem grossly disproportionate, but insights from network economics suggest a more supple account of power. The interests of creators are examined in the “top-down” context of the exercise of platform governance and efforts, by platforms and the state, to improve it. Those interests are also canvassed from the “bottom up”—how creators and creator advocacy are organizing and acting collectively to improve prospects for creators in this emerging industry.
The spin-orbit interaction permits to control the state of a spin qubit via electric fields. Here we investigate, experimentally and theoretically, the effect of the cubic Rashba spin-orbit interaction on the mixing of the spin states by studying singlet-triplet oscillations in a planar Ge hole double quantum dot. Landau-Zener sweeps at different magnetic field directions allow us to disentangle the effects of the spin-orbit induced spin-flip term from those caused by strongly site-dependent and anisotropic quantum dot g tensors. Our work, therefore, provides new insights into the hole spin-orbit interaction, necessary for optimizing future qubit experiments.
Small cell carcinoma of the ovary of hypercalcemic type (SCCOHT) is an extremely rare, aggressive cancer affecting children and young women. We identified germline and somatic inactivating mutations ...in the SWI/SNF chromatin-remodeling gene SMARCA4 in 75% (9/12) of SCCOHT cases in addition to SMARCA4 protein loss in 82% (14/17) of SCCOHT tumors but in only 0.4% (2/485) of other primary ovarian tumors. These data implicate SMARCA4 in SCCOHT oncogenesis.

Millions of research participants will be needed and will have to be willing to share highly personal and private information about their health and wellness in order for connections to be fully ...elucidated. Reaching these numbers will require data sharing and integration from multiple studies and cohorts. It is likely that many individuals will participate across a variety of studies sharing different types of private data. Linking data across studies may enable biomedical breakthroughs, but it may also increase privacy risks. Protecting privacy is not just an ethical and legal challenge; it is a major research problem. In this issue, Arif Harmanci and Mark Gerstein examine the increased privacy risk from linkage attacks when information about an individual is present in multiple high-dimensional genotypic and phenotypic data sets1. Their study focuses on exploiting outliers or extremes in one group of data to re-identify and link to other databases. They analyze the tradeoff between privacy leakage and the emergence of large, multidimensional RNA-seq genomic data sets, such as those emerging from the GTex, ENCODE and TCGA consortiums or through future efforts such as the Precision Medicine Initiative.
