The Oxford Handbook of Corporate Social Responsibility is a review of the academic research that has both prompted, and responded to, the issues of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Business ...schools, the media, the corporate sector, governments, and non-governmental organizations have all begun to pay more attention to these issues in recent years. These issues encompass broad questions about the changing relationship between business, society and government, environmental issues, corporate governance, the social and ethical dimensions of management, globalization, stakeholder debates, shareholder and consumer activism, changing political systems and values, and the ways in which corporations can respond to new social imperatives. The book, which provides clear thinking and new perspectives on CSR and the debates around it, is divided into seven key sections: introduction; perspectives on CSR; critiques of CSR; actors and drivers; managing CSR; CSR in a global context; future perspectives and conclusions.
Scant attention has been paid to the phenomenon of modern slavery in the management literature. This article redresses this by identifying modern slavery as a management practice comprising ...exploiting/insulating capabilities and sustaining/shaping capabilities. I present a model specifying how these microorganization-level capabilities enable enterprises that deploy slavery to take advantage of the macro-institutional conditions that permit the practice to flourish in the face of widespread illegality and illegitimacy. I then advance potential implications for management theory and suggestions for further theoretical and empirical research.

For the past 15 years, nanoscale metallic iron (nZVI) has been investigated as a new tool for the treatment of contaminated water and soil. The technology has reached commercial status in many countries worldwide, however is yet to gain universal acceptance. This review summarises our contemporary knowledge of nZVI aqueous corrosion, manufacture and deployment, along with methods to enhance particle reactivity, stability and subsurface mobility. Reasons for a lack of universal acceptance are also explored. Key factors include: concerns over the long-term fate, transformation and ecotoxicity of nZVI in environmental systems and, a lack of comparable studies for different nZVI materials and deployment strategies. It is highlighted that few investigations to date have examined systems directly analogous to the chemistry, biology and architecture of the terrestrial environment. Such emerging studies have highlighted new concerns, including the prospect for remobilisation of heavy metals and radionuclides over extended periods. The fundamental importance of being able to accurately predict the long-term physical, chemical and biological fate of contaminated sites following nZVI treatment is emphasised and, as part of this, a universal empirical testing framework for nZVI is suggested.
An experiment was performed to measure the effect of Cereal Yellow-Dwarf Virus (CYDV), strain CYDV-RPV, on gene expression in its insect vector, greenbug aphid (Schizaphis graminum (Rondani)). RNA ...was sampled in three replicates from four treatments (biotypes B and H with or without carried CYDV), at 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 15 and 20 days from the introduction of carrier and virus-free greenbugs to uninfected wheat cv. 'Newton'. Illumina paired-end sequencing produced 1,840,820,000,000 raw reads that yielded 1,089,950,000 clean reads, which were aligned to two greenbug, Trinity transcriptome assemblies with bowtie2. Read counts to contigs were analyzed with principal components and with DESeq2 after removing contaminating contigs of wheat or microbial origin. Likelihood ratio tests with one transcriptome showed that CYDV influenced gene expression about seven-fold less than time or biotype, which were approximately equal. With the other transcriptome, virus, time, and biotype were about equally important. Pairwise comparisons of virus to no virus for each timepoint yielded estimates of fold-change that comprised expression profiles for each contig when ordered by timepoint. Hierarchical clustering separated expression profiles into 20 groups of contigs that were significantly differentially expressed for at least one timepoint. Contigs were also sorted by timepoint of maximally differential expression between virus and no virus. All contigs that were significantly differentially expressed at FDR = 0.05 were annotated by blast searches against NCBI nr and nt databases. Interesting examples of up-regulation with virus included a lysosomal-trafficking regulator, peptidylprolylisomerase, RNA helicase, and two secreted effector proteins. However, carried virus did not consistently change aphid gene expression overall. Instead there was complex interaction of time, biotype, host response, and virus.

With limited resources and attention, managers have sought ways to categorize and prioritize stakeholders. The underlying assumption is that some stakeholders matter more than others. However, in the ...information age, stakeholders are increasingly interconnected, where a firm’s actions toward one stakeholder are visible to others and can affect members of the stakeholder ecosystem. Actions by a firm toward any of its stakeholders can signal its trustworthiness and determine to what degree other stakeholders will assume vulnerability and engage in future exchange relationships. In this conceptual article, I present a model of stakeholder connectedness and describe the conditions in which a firm’s actions toward one stakeholder can build or erode trust across stakeholders. This work contributes to current tensions in stakeholder theory by elucidating how the treatment of a single stakeholder, or a narrow group of stakeholders, can have cascading effects on a broader group of stakeholders.
Crop yields are critically dependent on weather. A growing empirical literature models this relationship in order to project climate change impacts on the sector. We describe an approach to yield ...modeling that uses a semiparametric variant of a deep neural network, which can simultaneously account for complex nonlinear relationships in high-dimensional datasets, as well as known parametric structure and unobserved cross-sectional heterogeneity. Using data on corn yield from the US Midwest, we show that this approach outperforms both classical statistical methods and fully-nonparametric neural networks in predicting yields of years withheld during model training. Using scenarios from a suite of climate models, we show large negative impacts of climate change on corn yield, but less severe than impacts projected using classical statistical methods. In particular, our approach is less pessimistic in the warmest regions and the warmest scenarios.

The formula not only contributes to the foundations of evolutionary ...molecular genetics, the neutral theory of biodiversity, Bayesian nonparametrics, combinatorial stochastic processes, and inductive inference but also emerges from fundamental concepts in probability theory, algebra, and number theory. With an emphasis on its far-reaching influence throughout statistics and probability, we highlight these and many other consequences of Ewens's seminal discovery.
