In order to facilitate access to the large volumes of data (multiple petabytes per year) which will be produced during data taking and Monte Carlo production at ATLAS, work has proceeded on building ...a system of event-level metadata to allow selections of a subset of events to use as input to an analysis. This was included in the ATLAS Computing Model and was first studied and implemented by the Physics Analysis Tools group based on the decisions of the ESD/AOD Task Force. They used tools developed and supported by the CERN IT group and the ATLAS Database group. During 2005 this structure was put through various tests and evaluations. Also, work by physicists on reconstruction and analysis led to an improved understanding of the requirements on the TAG. This report addresses the effect of these new inputs on the previous work with regard to content and the infrastructure needed to support it.
A sensitive and specific assay for the determination of the catecholestrogens 2-hydroxyestradiol (2-OHE2) and 4-hydroxyestradiol (4-OHE2) using gas chromatography with electron-capture detection ...(GC–ECD) is described. The formation of 2- and 4-OHE2 was assessed following activation of 17β-estradiol in the microsomal fraction of female rat livers. The analytes were isolated by solid-phase extraction, derivatized to their heptafluorobutyryl esters with heptafluorobutyric acid anhydride, and subjected to solvent exchange prior to analysis; this resulted in minimal chromatographic interference, long column life, and stable derivatized analytes. Derivatized catechols were separated and confirmed with dual column chromatography (DB-5 and DB-608) and quantitated using GC–ECD. The DB-608 column was preferred for quantitation as it provided better 4-OHE2 resolution from interference. Key validation parameters for the assay include sensitivity, intra- and inter-assay precision, and accuracy. Instrument sensitivity and limits of detection (LOD) and quantitation (LOQ) were determined statistically from fortification data approaching expected limits. For 2-OHE2 and 4-OHE2, respective values for these parameters were; instrument sensitivities of 0.4 and 0.7 pg, LODs of 0.8 and 1.3 ng/mg, and LOQs of 2.6 and 4.3 ng/mg.
Charginos and neutralinos are searched for in the data collected by the ALEPH experiment at LEP for centre-of-mass energies up to 209 GeV. The negative result of these searches is combined with those ...from searches for sleptons and Higgs bosons to derive an absolute lower limit of 43.1 GeV/c2 on the mass of the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP), assumed to be the lightest neutralino. This limit is obtained in the framework of the MSSM with R-parity conservation and with gaugino and sfermion mass unification at the GUT scale and assuming no mixing in the stau sector. The LSP limit degrades only slightly to 42.4 GeV/c2 if stau mixing is considered. Within the more constrained framework of minimal supergravity, the limit is 50 GeV/c2.
In this chapter of the High Energy Physics Software Foundation Community Whitepaper, we discuss the current state of infrastructure, best practices, and ongoing developments in the area of data and ...software preservation in high energy physics. A re-framing of the motivation for preservation to enable re-use is presented. A series of research and development goals in software and other cyberinfrastructure that will aid in the enabling of reuse of particle physics analyses and production software are presented and discussed.
Single top production via the flavour changing neutral current reactions e+e−→t̄c,t̄u is searched for within the 214 pb−1 of data collected by ALEPH at centre-of-mass energies between 204 and ...209 GeV. No deviation from the Standard Model expectation is observed and upper limits on the single top production cross sections are derived. The combination with data collected at lower centre-of-mass energies yields an upper limit on the branching ratio BR(t→Zc)+BR(t→Zu)<14%, for BR(t→γc)+BR(t→γu)=0 and mt=174 GeV/c2.
