This book offers an up-to-date survey of the present state of affairs in Audiovisual Translation, providing a thought-provoking account of some of the most representative areas currently being ...researched in this field across the globe. The book discusses theoretical issues and provides useful and practical insights into professional practices.
This book shows some of the ways in which audiovisual translation (AVT) can be approached from an academic, professional and educational point of view. The studies provide a stimulating and ...thought-provoking account of some of the themes that are currently being researched in the field of AVT, while also highlighting new directions of research.
New Trends in Audiovisual Translation is an innovative and interdisciplinary collection of articles written by leading experts in the emerging field of audiovisual translation (AVT). In a highly ...accessible and engaging way, it introduces readers to some of the main linguistic and cultural challenges that translators encounter when translating films and other audiovisual productions. The chapters in this volume examine translation practices and experiences in various countries, highlighting how AVT plays a crucial role in shaping debates about languages and cultures in a world increasingly dependent on audiovisual media. Through analysing materials which have been dubbed and subtitled like Bridget Jones’s Diary, Forrest Gump, The Simpsons or South Park, the authors raise awareness of current issues in the study of AVT and offer new insights on this complex and vibrant area of the translation discipline.
While complementing other volumes in the BTL series in its exploration of the state of the art of translator training, this collection of essays is solely focused on audiovisual translation, one of ...the most complex and dynamic areas of the translation discipline. The book offers an easily accessible yet comprehensive introduction to the fascinating subject of translating films, video games and other audiovisual material. Offering a balance between theory and practice, the main aim of this volume is to provide a wealth of teaching and learning ideas in areas such as subtitling, dubbing, and voice-over without forgetting the newer fields of subtitling for the deaf and audio description for the blind. The Didactics of Audiovisual Translation comes with an accompanying CD-Rom, highlighting its fundamentally interactive approach, and the activities proposed can be adapted to different learning environments and used with different language combinations.
Quality is a rather slippery concept, and its assessment in subtitling can be a challenging task, as its appreciation can easily vary depending on the different stakeholders involved in the ...production and reception of subtitles. In this paper, we evaluate quality indicators in subtitling as perceived by professional subtitlers and viewers. After exploring the various subtitle parameters that can have an impact on the quality of the end product (such as line breaks, synchronisation, display rates), we present the results of two qualitative studies conducted with professional subtitlers and subtitle viewers with different audiovisual backgrounds. The results yield some similarities and discrepancies, particularly in the way in which the strategy of condensation is perceived by the two groups, and they also help delineate the subtitle parameters that should be taken into consideration in order to improve the creative process as well as the reception of subtitles.
The prevalence and popularity of audiovisual content in the current times has resulted in a wide range of practices which have been categorised within audiovisual translation (AVT) research as ...examples of fan translation, amateur translation, crowdsourcing or collaborative translation, among others. While some practices can be included under these categories, other forms of AVT that have recently emerged are not as clear-cut. Against this backdrop, this article explores the conceptual uncertainties surrounding these new AVT practices, with a focus on dubbing and subtitling, by revisiting the work carried out by the authors, who have previously suggested the use of the umbrella terms 'cybersubtitling' and 'cyberdubbing'. In addition to providing a revised classification, the paper emphasises the need to explore the wider social and ethical consequences of these innovative translational activities. As regards ethical implications, altruist and fan practices are the ones most exposed to malpractice, often because some organisations emulate corporate behaviour but rely on free labour, without any financial retribution or credit towards those involved in these activities. The article also concludes that more critical research should be conducted to unravel the impact of these practices on the role of translation as a socio-professional activity.

Abstract
With the rapid development of digitization and the emergence of social networks and streaming platforms,
audiovisual translation (AVT) has become one of the most prolific expressions of ...global communication in today’s society, able to
overcome linguistic barriers when disseminating culture across the world. While audiovisual productions originally shot in English
seem to be able to take full advantage of this situation, China’s domestic programs frequently encounter more challenges to make
it overseas. Adopting a primarily translational approach, this paper borrows the concept of “cultural discount,” coined by
Hoskins and Mirus (1988)
, to capture the notion that audiovisual productions are rooted
in one culture and, therefore, may have diminished appeal among viewers from other communities. The study holds that the degree of
cultural discount audiovisual productions may encounter when exported depends on numerous factors, which are explored through
examples of recently localized films and TV series of Chinese origin.
Since the invention of cinema, the prominence and significance of the moving image have never been underestimated by the powers-that-be, especially, though not exclusively, in totalitarian states, ...where foreign films and their translations are, and have been, ideologically controlled in order to avoid any conflict with the socio-cultural values predicated by the rulers of the hosting community. This paper focuses on the dubbing into Spanish of the classical film The Barefoot Contessa (Joseph L. Mankiewicz, 1954), in which glamorous Ava Gardner plays the role of a voluptuous Spanish flamenco dancer that becomes an international film star in the USA. Hollywood's appropriation and subsequent representation and internationalisation of Spanish mores and customs, embodied in the film by Ava Gardner and her Spanish family, was diametrically at odds with the values and virtues advocated by the Francoist regime (1939-1975), making this film a battleground for ideological manipulation and forcing the unleashing of a creative remediation process aimed at shrouding any criticism of Spanish interests or customs and cementing traditional values cherished by the regime.
This book is an edited collection of papers dealing with some of the main issues in audiovisual translation (AVT) today. As the title indicates, it proposes to take stock of where the discipline ...stands and to speak of the opportunities and challenges that an ever-changing environment poses to those involved in the field, whether in teaching, researching or working professionally within the industry. The selection of papers provides a detailed overview of the multidisciplinary richness that characterises AVT by covering topics related to culture, linguistics and technology, among others, in various thematic and geographical contexts. All the main domains of AVT are explored-subtitling, dubbing, surtitling, accessibility to the media-and new directions are highlighted, showing how audiovisual translation is moving beyond its traditional settings.
