With the corresponding 2–4 times tighter binary separation, PG 1302 would be undergoing gravitational wave dominated inspiral, and serve as a proof that the BHs can be fuelled and produce bright emission even in this late stage of the merger. The expected fraction of binaries with the shorter t
bin, among bright quasars, would be reduced by one to two orders of magnitude, compared to the 5.2 yr period, in better agreement with the rarity of candidates reported by Graham et al. Finally, shorter periods would imply higher binary speeds, possibly imprinting periodicity on the light curves from relativistic beaming, as well as measurable relativistic effects on the Fe K α line. bin, as well as periodic variation of broad line widths and offsets relative to the narrow lines, which are consistent with the observations. Future observations will be able to test these predictions and hence the binary+CBD hypothesis for PG 1302.
ABSTRACT
We present and analyse a new tidal disruption event (TDE), AT2017eqx at redshift z = 0.1089, discovered by Pan-STARRS and ATLAS. The position of the transient is consistent with the nucleus ...of its host galaxy; the spectrum shows a persistent blackbody temperature T ≳ 20 000 K with broad H i and He ii emission; and it peaks at a blackbody luminosity of L ≈ 1044 erg s−1. The lines are initially centred at zero velocity, but by 100 d, the H i lines disappear while the He ii develops a blueshift of ≳ 5000 km s−1. Both the early- and late-time morphologies have been seen in other TDEs, but the complete transition between them is unprecedented. The evolution can be explained by combining an extended atmosphere, undergoing slow contraction, with a wind in the polar direction becoming visible at late times. Our observations confirm that a lack of hydrogen a TDE spectrum does not indicate a stripped star, while the proposed model implies that much of the diversity in TDEs may be due to the observer viewing angle. Modelling the light curve suggests AT2017eqx resulted from the complete disruption of a solar-mass star by a black hole of ∼106.3 M⊙. The host is another Balmer-strong absorption galaxy, though fainter and less centrally concentrated than most TDE hosts. Radio limits rule out a relativistic jet, while X-ray limits at 500 d are among the deepest for a TDE at this phase.
The use of lipid-containing semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs) is becoming commonplace, but very little sampling rate data are available for the estimation of ambient contaminant concentrations ...from analyte levels in exposed SPMDs. We determined the aqueous sampling rates (R ss; expressed as effective volumes of water extracted daily) of the standard (commercially available design) 1-g triolein SPMD for 15 of the priority pollutant (PP) polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) at multiple temperatures and concentrations. Under the experimental conditions of this study, recovery-corrected R s values for PP PAHs ranged from ≈1.0 to 8.0 L/d. These values would be expected to be influenced by significant changes (relative to this study) in water temperature, degree of biofouling, and current velocity-turbulence. Included in this paper is a discussion of the effects of temperature and octanol−water partition coefficient (K ow); the impacts of biofouling and hydrodynamics are reported separately. Overall, SPMDs responded proportionally to aqueous PAH concentrations; i.e., SPMD R s values and SPMD-water concentration factors were independent of aqueous concentrations. Temperature effects (10, 18, and 26 °C) on R s values appeared to be complex but were relatively small.
Abstract Background Over 23,000 people per day require treatment for ankle sprains. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous concentration of platelets that is thought to improve healing by ...promoting inflammation through growth factor and cytokine release. Studies to date have shown mixed results, with few randomized trials. Objectives To determine patient function among patients randomized to receive standard therapy plus PRP, compared to patients who receive standard therapy plus sham injection (placebo). Methods Prospective, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial. Patients with severe ankle sprains were randomized. Severity was graded on degree of swelling, ecchymosis, and ability to bear weight. PRP with lidocaine and bupivacaine was injected at the point of maximum tenderness by a blinded physician under ultrasound guidance. The control group was injected in a similar fashion with sterile 0.9% saline. Both groups had visual analog scale (VAS) pain scores and Lower Extremity Functional Scale (LEFS) on days 0, 3, and 8. LEFS and a numeric pain score were obtained via phone call on day 30. All participants were splinted, given crutches, and instructed to not bear weight for 3 days; at this time patients were reevaluated. Results There were 1156 patients screened and 37 were enrolled. Four withdrew before PRP injection was complete; 18 were randomized to PRP and 15 to placebo. There was no statistically significant difference in VAS and LEFS scores between groups. Conclusion In this small study, PRP did not provide benefit in either pain control or function over placebo.
Semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs) are used with increasing frequency, and throughout the world as samplers of organic contaminants. The devices can be used to detect a variety of lipophilic ...chemicals in water, sediment/soil, and air. SPMDs are designed to sample nonpolar, hydrophobic chemicals. The maximum concentration factor achievable for a particular chemical is proportional to its octanol–water partition coefficient. Techniques used for cleanup of SPMD extracts for targeted analytes and for general screening by full-scan mass spectrometry do not differ greatly from techniques used for extracts of other matrices. However, SPMD extracts contain potential interferences that are specific to the membrane–lipid matrix. Procedures have been developed or modified to alleviate these potential interferences. The SPMD approach has been demonstrated to be applicable to sequestering and analyzing a wide array of environmental contaminants including organochlorine pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated dioxins and dibenzofurans, selected organophosphate pesticides and pyrethroid insecticides, and other nonpolar organic chemicals. We present herein an overview of effective procedural steps for analyzing exposed SPMDs for trace to ultra-trace levels of contaminants sequestered from environmental matrices.
Most standard descriptions of Type II migration state that massive, gap-opening planets must migrate at the viscous drift rate. This is based on the idea that the disk is separated into an inner and ...outer region and gas is considered unable to cross the gap. In fact, gas easily crosses the gap on horseshoe orbits, nullifying this necessary premise which would set the migration rate. In this work, it is demonstrated using highly accurate numerical calculations that the actual migration rate is dependent on disk and planet parameters, and can be significantly larger or smaller than the viscous drift rate. In the limiting case of a disk much more massive than the secondary, the migration rate saturates to a constant that is sensitive to disk parameters and is not necessarily of the order of the viscous rate. In the opposite limit of a low-mass disk, the migration rate decreases linearly with disk mass. Steady-state solutions in the low disk mass limit show no pile-up outside the secondary's orbit, and no corresponding drainage of the inner disk.
In this study, we present midrapidity measurements from the PHENIX experiment of large parity-violating single-spin asymmetries of high transverse momentum electrons and positrons from W±/Z decays, ...produced in longitudinally polarized p + p collisions at center of mass energies of √s = 500 and 510 GeV. These asymmetries allow direct access to the antiquark polarized parton distribution functions due to the parity-violating nature of the W-boson coupling to quarks and antiquarks. The results presented are based on data collected in 2011, 2012, and 2013 with an integrated luminosity of 240 pb–1, which exceeds previous PHENIX published results by a factor of more than 27. These high Q2 data probe the parton structure of the proton at W mass scale and provide an important addition to our understanding of the antiquark parton helicity distribution functions at an intermediate Bjorken x value of roughly MW/ √s = 0.16.

This finding is apparent in cognitively unimpaired APOE4 carriers and more severe in those with cognitive impairment, but is not related to amyloid-β or tau pathology measured in cerebrospinal fluid or by positron emission tomography

To date, limited information is available on the long-term discontinuation rates of antiplatelet therapy after drug-eluting stent implantation. The aim of the present study was to determine the ...prevalence and predictors of premature discontinuation of oral antiplatelet therapy after drug-eluting stent implantation and to evaluate its effects on long-term prognosis. We studied 1,358 consecutive patients successfully treated with drug-eluting stents and discharged with dual oral antiplatelet therapy. Aspirin was to be maintained lifelong, and clopidogrel was prescribed for 12 months. The patients were followed for 36 months. The prevalence and predictors of aspirin and clopidogrel discontinuation were assessed. Major adverse cardiac events, defined as death, myocardial infarction, destabilizing symptoms leading to hospitalization, and nonfatal stroke, were recorded. Definite, probable, and possible stent thrombosis (ST) and major and minor bleeding were also determined. Of the 1,358 patients, 8.8% had discontinued one or both antiplatelet agents within the first 12 months (“early” discontinuation) and 4.8% had discontinued aspirin after 1 year (“late” discontinuation). Early discontinuation was predicted by in-hospital major bleeding, the use of oral anticoagulants at discharge, and the lack of a statin prescription. Previous stroke was the only independent predictor of late discontinuation. Patients with early discontinuation experienced a greater incidence of major adverse cardiac events (28.6% vs 13.7%, p <0.001) and ST (7.6% vs 3.4%, p = 0.038). All-cause mortality (13.4% vs 4.7%, p <0.001) and cardiovascular death (5% vs 1.2%, p = 0.007) were significantly more frequent among patients with early discontinuation. In patients with late discontinuation, a nonstatistically significant increase was seen in major adverse cardiac events (20% vs 13.3%, p = 0.128) and ST (6.2% vs 3.2%, p = 0.275). In conclusion, premature discontinuation of antiplatelet therapy is relatively common, especially within the first year, and strongly associated with increased cardiovascular events, including ST and death.
