Summary
Novel coronavirus 2019 is a single‐stranded, ribonucleic acid virus that has led to an international pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019. Clinical data from the Chinese outbreak have been ...reported, but experiences and recommendations from clinical practice during the Italian outbreak have not. We report the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 outbreak on regional and national healthcare infrastructure. We also report on recommendations based on clinical experiences of managing patients throughout Italy. In particular, we describe key elements of clinical management, including: safe oxygen therapy; airway management; personal protective equipment; and non‐technical aspects of caring for patients diagnosed with coronavirus disease 2019. Only through planning, training and team working will clinicians and healthcare systems be best placed to deal with the many complex implications of this new pandemic.
Pimobendan is an inotropic and vasodilator drug with no sympathomimetic effects. This study aimed to evaluate the haemodynamic effects of pimobendan during anaesthesia in healthy senior dogs. A ...prospective, randomised, triple-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical study was conducted. Thirty-three dogs (median range: 9 7, 12 years) were anaesthetised for surgical procedures. The dogs were randomly allocated into two groups: eighteen dogs received intravenous pimobendan at a dose of 0.15 mg/kg (PIMOBENDAN), and fifteen dogs received intravenous saline solutions at a dose of 0.2 mL/kg (PLACEBO). Data were recorded before, 1 min, 10 min, and 20 min after injection. Velocity-time integral (VTI), peak-velocity (PV), and mean-acceleration (MA) were measured using an oesophageal Doppler monitor (ODM). Heart rate and mean arterial pressure were also registered. The data were analysed using a two-way ANOVA for trimmed means. Statistical differences were considered if p < 0.05. Twenty minutes after injection, the VTI (13.0 cm 10.4, 22.3), PV (95.0 83.0, 160 m/s), and MA (12.6 9.40, 17.0 m/s
) were significantly higher in the PIMOBENDAN group compared to the PLACEBO group (VTI: 10.5 6.50, 17.4 cm, PV: 80.0 62.0, 103 m/s and MA: 10.2 7.00, 16.0 ms
). No significant differences were observed in the rest of the variables. Using pimobendan during anaesthesia increases VTI, PV, and MA, as measured by an ODM.

The objective of this study was to describe a large Italian cohort of patients with late-onset glycogen storage disease type 2 (GSDII) at various stages of disease progression and to evaluate the ...clinical effectiveness of alglucosidase alpha enzyme replacement therapy (ERT). Previous studies showed in late-onset patients ERT efficacy against placebo and variable response in uncontrolled studies. Seventy-four juvenile or adult GSDII patients were treated with ERT in a multicenter open label, non-randomized study, from 12 months up to 54 months. Recombinant human alpha glucosidase (rh-GAA) was injected by intravenous route at 20 mg/kg every second week. Patients were divided into three groups according to ERT duration: Group A received treatment for 12–23 months (

= 16), Group B for 24–35 months (

= 14), and Group C for more than 36 months (

= 44). Clinical assessment included a 6-min walk test (6MWT), forced vital capacity (FVC), the Walton and Gardner-Medwin score, the number of hours of ventilation, body mass index, echocardiography and blood creatine kinase (CK). Included in our cohort were 33 males and 41 females (M:F = 0.8:1), with a mean age at first symptoms of 28.3 years (range 2–55 years) and a mean age of 43 years at study entry (range 7–72 years). Seven wheelchair bound patients, as well as 27 patients requiring ventilation support, were included. After treatment we could observe an increase in distance walked on the 6MWT in the large majority of patients (48/58; 83%), with an overall mean increase of 63 m (from 320 ± 161 to 383 ± 178 m). After treatment in the majority of patients FVC was improved or unchanged (45/69; 65%). In ventilated patients we observed an improvement in average number of hours off the ventilator (from 15.6 to 12.1 h). Six patients stopped mechanical ventilation and two others started it. The effect of therapy was not related to ERT duration. Nine of 64 patients (13%) that underwent to echocardiography showed a variable degree of cardiac hypertrophy (left ventriculum or septum), and a positive effect was observed after 36 months of ERT in one adult case. Discontinuation of treatment occurred in four patients: one drop-off case, one patient died for a sepsis after 34 months of treatment and two patients stopped ERT for worsening of general clinical condition. Mild adverse effects were observed in four cases (5%). This study represents the largest cohort of late-onset GSDII patients treated with ERT, and confirm a positive effect of treatment. These results, obtained in a large case series on therapy, indicate a favourable effect of ERT therapy, even in more advanced stage of the disease.
The new World Wide Web site “GOLDMine” (Galaxy On Line Database Milano Network) (http:// goldmine.mib.infn.it) contains a multiwavelength data-base of an optically selected sample of 3267 galaxies in ...the Virgo cluster and in the Coma Supercluster. It is designed for professional astronomers who wish to find data and images for these galaxies. Data gathered in 15 years of observational campaigns by the authors or taken from the literature include general parameters (catalogue names, celestial coordinates, morphological type, recessional velocity etc.), multiwavelength continuum photometry (total UV, U, B, V, J, H, K, FIR and radio magnitudes/flux densities), line photometry (HI, H2, Hα), dynamical parameters (rotational velocity from the HI and Hα lines, velocity dispersion) and structural parameters (light concentration index, effective radius and brightness, asymptotic magnitude) in the optical (B and V) and Near Infrared (H or K) bands. Images include finding charts, optical (B and V), Hα, Near Infrared (H and/or K) and true color RGB frames (when available). Radial light profiles obtained from the B, V, H or K band images are also available. Integrated optical spectra along with broad Spectral Energy Distributions (SED) from the UV to the radio domain are given. All images can be obtained in JPG format, but the original (reduced) FITS images can be downloaded as well. The database will be updated regularly and will be extended to other local clusters and superclusters. Astronomers who wish to have their images included in GOLDMine are strongly encouraged to send us their material.
Background
Acetaminophen (ACT) has been studied in septic patients with detectable plasmatic levels of cell-free hemoglobin (Hb), where it demonstrated to inhibit the hemoprotein-mediated lipid ...peroxidation and oxidative injury, with a potential of beneficial effect on the endothelium. On the basis of this background, the aim of this study was to evaluate the sublingual microcirculation and the peripheral tissue perfusion before-and-after administration of ACT on clinical judgment in a cohort of febrile septic and septic shock patients.
Methods
Prospective observational study. 50 adult septic and septic shocks treated with ACT for pyrexia, where the sublingual microcirculation and the peripheral tissue perfusion with Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) and vascular occlusion test (VOT) were evaluated before ACT (t0), after 30 min (t1) and after 2 h (t2). Cell-free Hb and the markers of oxidative stress and endothelial damage were measured at t0 and t2.
Results
The study showed a significant increase of the density of the perfused small and total vessels of the sublingual microcirculation 30 min after the infusion of ACT; it also showed an increase of the Microvascular Flow Index (MFI) and a decrease in the heterogeneity of the flow.
At a peripheral muscular level, we found an acceleration in the reperfusion curve after VOT at t1, expression of a higher reactivity of the microvasculature.
Conclusions
ACT infusion did not show a clear correlation with cell-free Hb; however, it exhibited protective effect toward the microcirculation that was evident in particular in septic patients. This correlation merits further exploration.
In the past decade, there has been increasing interest in understanding how and when math anxiety (MA) develops. The incidence and effects of MA in primary school children, and its relations with ...math achievement, have been investigated. Nevertheless, only a few studies have focused on the first years of primary school, highlighting that initial signs of MA may emerge as early as 6 years of age. Nevertheless, there are some issues with measuring MA in young children. One of these is that, although several scales have been recently developed for this age group, the psychometric properties of most of these instruments have not been adequately tested. There is also no agreement in the number and identity of the factors that underlie MA at this young age. Some scales also consist of several items, which make them impractical to use in multivariate studies, which aim at the simultaneous measurement of several constructs. Finally, most scales have been developed and validated in US populations, and it is unclear if they are appropriate to be used in other countries. In order to address these issues, the current studies aimed at developing a short, new instrument to assess MA in early elementary school students, the
Early Elementary School Abbreviated Math Anxiety Scale
(the EES-AMAS). This scale is an adapted version of the
Abbreviated Math Anxiety Scale
(AMAS;
Hopko et al., 2003
), which is one of the most commonly used scales to measure MA and has been shown to be a valid and reliable measure across a number of countries and age groups. The psychometric properties of the new scale have been investigated by taking into account its dimensionality, reliability, and validity. Moreover, the gender invariance of the scale has been verified by showing the measurement equivalence of the scale when administered to male and female pupils. We have also demonstrated the equivalence of the scale across languages (Italian and English). Overall, the findings confirmed the validity and reliability of the new scale in assessing the early signs of math anxiety and in measuring differences between genders and educational contexts. We have also shown that MA was already related to math performance, and teacher’s ratings of children’s math ability at this young age. Additionally, we have found no gender differences in MA in our samples of 6- and 7-year-old children, an important finding, given the strong evidence for gender differences in MA in older age groups.
Objective
There is substantial evidence that a diet rich in fruit and vegetables may reduce the risk of aging and stress oxidative associated diseases. It has been suggested that benefits associated ...with fruit and red wine consumption could be due to pooled antioxidant microcomponents in diet. The aim of this study was to investigate the antioxidant activities of pure resveratrol (a well known phytoalexin, RSV) and red wine polyphenols (RWP), using UV-B radiated isolated rat hepatocytes as a model of oxidative stress.
Methods
Rat hepatocytes were isolated by the collagenase method. The cells were loaded with resveratrol and/or polyphenols at different concentrations. The production of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) released by UV-B radiated cells and the levels of lipid-soluble antioxidants (Dolichol, Vitamin E, Coenzyme Q9 and Q10) were measured.
Results
Resveratrol had pro-oxidant or antioxidant effects depending on (lower or higher) dosage. RWP protection from photolipoperoxidation was dose-dependent and increased with dosage. Combination of the two compounds exhibited synergistic antioxidant effect, and made resveratrol effective both at lower and higher dosages.
Conclusions
These results suggest that resveratrol requires red wine polyphenols for optimum antioxidant activity.
