Nick Cave is now widely recognized as a songwriter, musician, novelist, screenwriter, curator, critic, actor and performer. From the band, The Boys Next Door (1976-1980), to the spoken-word ...recording, The Secret Life of the Love Song (1998), to the recently acclaimed screenplay of The Proposition (2005) and the Grinderman project (2008), Cave's career spans thirty years and has produced a comprehensive (and sometimes controversial) body of work that has shaped contemporary alternative culture. Despite intense media interest in Cave, there have been remarkably few comprehensive appraisals of his work, its significance and its impact on understandings of popular culture. In addressing this absence, the present volume is both timely and necessary. Cultural Seeds brings together an international range of scholars and practitioners, each of whom is uniquely placed to comment on an aspect of Cave's career. The essays collected here not only generate new ways of seeing and understanding Cave's contributions to contemporary culture, but set up a dialogue between fields all-too-often separated in the academy and in the media. Topics include Cave and the Presley myth; the aberrant masculinity projected by The Birthday Party; the postcolonial Australian-ness of his humour; his interventions in film and his erotics of the sacred. These essays offer compelling insights and provocative arguments about the fluidity of contemporary artistic practice.
Wallis told Baird of the "surprising news" that he had been approached by the national Library of new Zealand (Alexander turnbull Library), which was keen to include some of his personal papers in ...their manuscript collection. . . . to my astonishment (and a bit of a warm glow) the curator told me he wanted typescripts of all my unpublished works (there are around ten of those) together with my diaries and workbooks leading up to the publication of the first novel and a folder or two of selected letters. so, i shall be an Archive, which while it may not be high in the order, must be close to a seraphim or perhaps a Cherubim. i can foresee a future thesis: "An enquiry into the Causes of Failure Following early Literary promise: with particular Reference to the 20th Century Canterbury novelist Redmond Wallis." i have to say i am quite pleased at the possibility i may be grist to some academic's mill.2 Wallis's "astonishment" at this approach may have been because he had spent very little time in his home country in the previous four decades, or perhaps, as he hinted, due to his insubstantial published output.
The John Hillcoat-directed, Nick Cave-penned film, The Proposition (2005), is most instantly recognizable as one recent reinterpretation of 'the western' cinematic genre, which makes the focus of ...this article on its representation of the garden and female corporeality unlikely. Yet, The Proposition is not a stock transferral of 'the western' to contemporary imaginings of late nineteenth-century colonial Queensland, and an attentiveness to the peripheral interest of The Proposition in the garden and female bodies, rather than the climactic show-down in the main street (which never occurs in Hillcoat's film), raises tangential but telling issues about borders and migration in a settler context that are perhaps not the anticipated subject of a film that ostensibly turns around its eponymous proposal: the murder of one outlaw brother by another to save the life of a third male sibling.
This article presents results of research using the diaries of Sidney Nolan, recently made available by the National Library of Australia. In particular, it focuses on two matters relating to Nolan's ...lengthy friendship with Australian journalist and novelist George Johnston: clarifying the origin of Nolan's Gallipoli series, which is strongly associated with a period in 1955 and 1956 that Nolan spent with Johnston on the Greek island of Hydra; and secondly, providing evidence regarding a curiosity with the series of portraits known as the Adelaide Ladies, which Nolan painted after spending time with Johnston at the Adelaide Festival of Arts in 1964. With regard to the Gallipoli series, Nolan's diaries establish that the origin of this series is considerably later than has previously been believed; likewise, our research suggests that the diaries support the contention that a portrait that has long been included among the Adelaide Ladies is in fact a portrait of Johnston.

...literary scholarship in the twenty-first century needs to continue asking questions about expatriation. ...it was decided that presenters should be invited to submit relevant papers for a 'special ...issue' of JASAL. (There were a number of fine papers but some of these were not sufficiently relevant to the national focus of JASAL.) The opening section, 'Reflections on expatriation,' brings together personal accounts of literary expatriation from three highly regarded creative writers: poet Andrew Taylor, who was one of the post-war generation who set out for Europe, although in his case the pathway led to Italy and not the UK; novelist Susan Johnson, who reflects on the phenomenon of twentieth century literary expatriation and her own choices to spend periods living in the Aegean, and raises some of the questions regarding who we do or don't consider to be 'expatriates'; and novelist and diplomat Margaret Barbalet, who asks us to consider the case of Australian diplomatic expatriates and their propensity to produce a very particular form of memoir.

Johnston later wrote about this ...adventure in his memoir Journey Through Tomorrow (1947) as part of a wider account of his travels in Asia during the Second World War. This article considers the Tibetan section of his narrative with a focus on the influence of English novelist James Hilton's Lost Horizon, with its depiction of a Tibetan utopia in the form of the lamasery of Shangri-La. In doing so the article considers Johnston's text as an example of the challenge faced by travel writers in negotiating the territory between myth and reality in representing the 'truth' of their experience, and as a narrative that avoids the worst of the orientalizing traits of many other travelers' accounts of Tibet.
