Studies on functional traits of aquatic communities are useful for understanding the ecosystem dynamics as well as the diversity of ecological niches. Here, we characterize zooplankton functional ...groups and which limnological factors are responsible to changes in traits. Water samples were collected to evaluate limnological parameters and vertical hauls with plankton net (68 μm) were performed to characterize the community in seven reservoirs (Itupararanga, Atibainha, Salto Grande, Rio Grande, Igaratá, Barra Bonita, and Broa, São Paulo state, Brazil). Each species identified was classified according to a trophic group, reproduction mode, body length, habitat, and feeding habitats. Our results showed a predominance of pelagic suspensory herbivores with cilia (31%) followed by pelagic herbivore suspension filter feeders (17%) and raptorial omnivores (15.38%). The other individuals were categorized as pelagic herbivore suspension with oral device (12.3%), littoral herbivores suspensive with cilia (12.3%), pelagic-sucking herbivores (9.2%), and littoral grazing herbivores (3%). The dominance of herbivores may be influenced by the availability of nutrients, influencing their food sources. The abundance of omnivores engaged in predatory behavior can be attributed to disponible prey, thereby exerting significant repercussions on the organization of biological communities.
This study investigated the influence of land use on water quality parameters in the subtropical basin of Jundiaí-Mirim river. Water samples were collected to measure nutrients concentration and ...direct measurements by multiparameter probe were performed, as well as landscape analysis, using satellite images and visits in the sampling sites, besides analysis of population density data. Data were standardized and the correlation between the variables was measured using Spearman approach. Land use in the surrounding area of the sampling points had strong and significant correlations (p < 0.05) with some of the water quality parameters evaluated. These correlations had different causes, explained by the land use in a 50 m radius, or 500 m radius, or even beyond these environments studied. Landscape analysis has proved to be an important tool for understanding the interaction between water quality and land use.
Cytosolic phospholipase A2 (cPLA2) belongs to a large family of proteins and plays a crucial role in the regulation of arachidonic acid metabolism and inflammation cascade in zebrafish (Danio rerio). ...This enzyme with a molecular weight of 85 kDa, has two distinct domains. One is the regulatory and calcium-dependent (Ca2+) domain called C2, the other is the catalytic α/β hydrolase Ca2+-independent domain, where serine and aspartic acid catalytic dyad residues are present. We investigated the interaction of malathion and their organophosphate metabolites in the cPLA2 using in silico tools. Molecular docking results showed hydrophobic interactions with the paraoxon and catalytic site residue (Ser 223). Malathion increases intracellular Ca2+ due to endoplasmic reticulum influx which in turn activities phospholipase A2 and arachidonic acid release. Molecular docking and homology modelling of proteins and ligands could be a complementary tool for ecotoxicology and environment pollution assessment.

Screening is a key stage in environmental impact assessment (EIA), but the most common approach based on policy delineation are inherently arbitrary. On the other hand, a case-by-case approach can be ...complex, slow, and costly. This paper introduces a computational intelligence based on hybrid fuzzy inference system (h-FIS), combining data-driven and expert knowledge, in order to assess its capability of supporting a case-by-case screening in project appraisal. For empirical research, a dataset with appraisal variables of projects highway was made available by a Brazilian environmental protection agency (EPA). Firstly, using this dataset, multivariate analyses were performed to find criteria (xi) capable of indicating statistically significant differences among projects, previously screened by EPA experts into three types (simplified, preliminary, and comprehensive) of environmental impact study (EIS). Then, h-FIS was built through machine learning, using the FRBCS·W algorithm, with xi as input predictors and the type of EIS as the output target. The performances of alternative approaches were compared using cross-validation accuracy tests and the kappa index, with a significance level of 0.05. As a result, the h-FIS achieved accuracy of 92.6% and a kappa index of 0.88, which represented almost perfect agreement between the screening decision provided by the h-FIS and the one performed by the EPA experts. In conclusion, the fuzzy-based computational intelligence was capable of dealing with the complexity involved in screening decision. Therefore h-FIS be considered a promising complementary tool for a case-by-case project appraisal in EIA. For further advances, future research should assess other algorithms, such as genetic fuzzy systems, in order to strengthen the proposed system and make it generally applicable in other projects subject to EIA.
•a new fuzzy system has been proposed to support a case-by-case screening of proposals in environmental impact assessment;•criteria with higher explanatory power for supporting the discretionary approach were found from multivariate analyzes;•the introduced approach was capable of providing an almost perfect agreement with the screening decision by the experts;•the achieved findings stimulate further studies to strengthen the approach proposed in this paper.

The Cantareira System comprises a series of five dams located in distinct watershed, mainly responsible for water supply in the Metropolitan Region of Sao Paulo state. Due to water crisis in the area, its necessary to develop studies that describe environmental conditions and possible interference. In this sense, the zooplankton community is being used such as biomonitoring tool. However, the zooplankton is considered an important component of the energy flow in ecosystem. Therefore, this study aimed to characterize the zooplankton community in five reservoirs of the Cantareira System (Jaguari, Jacarei waterfall Atibainha and Paiva Castro) and associate biological data with the limnological variables in order to diagnose changes in environmental conditions. Samples were collected during the dry (May and June) and rainy season (November and December) of 2013 in 19 sampling points. Temperature, electrical conductivity, pH and dissolved oxygen were measured in situ with multi-parameter probe. Nutrients, suspended matter and the pigments were determined in the laboratory. Zooplankton samples were collected in the photic zone through vertical hauling with 68 µm net. Results showed eutrophication in Jaguari reservoir and some physico-chemical variables not agreement the limit established by law. Although the Cantareira System classified as multi-system, a pattern similar to the cascade of reservoirs was observed. Regarding the zooplankton, the rotifer group demonstrate higher species richness, however scarcely representative in biomass. Cyclopoids were more abundant in the dry season, while the Cladocera exceeded the other groups during the rainy. An positive trend for Cyclopoida density and trophic status were associated. The occurrence of invasive rotifer Kellicotia Bostoniensis and exotic algae Ceratium furcoides (Levander) Langhans 1925 were registred. Juveniles of copepods and Bosmina freyi were more abundant in the survey conducted. Crustaceans Calanoida showed the highest biomass values than the other groups. Based on the analysis, the spatial and temporal distribution were demonstrated. Most sampling points demonstrate moderate impact and water quality ranging from regular and poor. In this case, features such as water residence time and the morphometry, trophic status, ecological interactions are the main factors that could imply in changes in zooplankton composition.

Fica evidente a importância do tratamento de efluentes e controle das fontes de poluição difusas e pontuais no ecossistema promovendo a melhoria da qualidade da água e controle de cianobactérias.ABSTRACTCyanobacteria play an important role among producers in aquatic ecosystems, however when associated with eutrophication they become an ecological and public health problem. The problem involving cyanobacteria is the blooming of potentially toxic strains. The present work aims to present and discuss the problems related to the proliferation of cyanobacteria in limnological environments, and its consequences for dynamics in the environment and effects on environmental health. In this sense, knowledge about these organisms is of great importance, especially in water bodies with multiple uses. This research represents a review of published works involving environmental quality and aquatic ecotoxicology, focusing on studies related to cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins. For the present work, textbooks and articles published between 2010 and 2020 in national and internationaljournals were analyzed. In the literature published in recent years, the main methodologies involved in the detection and removal of cyanotoxins are presented, in addition to ecotoxicological bioassays. The study of cyanobacteria and their metabolites comprises an area of interest that reaches a greater dimension when impacts on the quality of water supply are evident, thus the importance of treating effluents and controlling pollution sources in the ecosystem is evident, promoting improvement and maintenance the quality of the water bodies.
