ABSTRACT
Observed rotation curves in star-forming galaxies indicate a puzzling dearth of dark matter in extended flat cores within haloes of mass ≥1012M⊙ at z ∼ 2. This is not reproduced by current ...cosmological simulations, and supernova-driven outflows are not effective in such massive haloes. We address a hybrid scenario where post-compaction merging satellites heat up the dark-matter cusps by dynamical friction, allowing active galactic nucleus (AGN)-driven outflows to generate cores. Using analytic and semi-analytic models (SatGen), we estimate the dynamical friction heating as a function of satellite compactness for a cosmological sequence of mergers. Cosmological simulations (VELA) demonstrate that satellites of initial virial masses >1011.3M⊙, which undergo wet compactions, become sufficiently compact for significant heating. Constituting a major fraction of the accretion on to haloes ≥1012M⊙, these satellites heat up the cusps in half a virial time at z ∼ 2. Using a model for outflow-driven core formation (CuspCore), we demonstrate that the heated dark-matter cusps develop extended cores in response to removal of half the gas mass, while the more compact stellar systems remain intact. The mergers keep the dark matter hot, while the gas supply, fresh and recycled, is sufficient for the AGN outflows. AGNs indeed become effective in haloes ≥1012M⊙, where the black hole growth is no longer suppressed by supernovae and its compaction-driven rapid growth is maintained by a hot circumgalactic medium. For simulations to reproduce the dynamical friction effects, they should resolve the compaction of the massive satellites and avoid artificial tidal disruption. AGN feedback could be boosted by clumpy black hole accretion and clumpy response to AGN.
We employ numerical simulations of galaxy mergers to explore the effect of galaxy mass ratio on merger-driven starbursts. Our numerical simulations include radiative cooling of gas, star formation, ...and stellar feedback to follow the interaction and merger of four disc galaxies. The galaxy models span a factor of 23 in total mass and are designed to be representative of typical galaxies in the local universe. We find that the merger-driven star formation is a strong function of merger mass ratio, with very little, if any, induced star formation for large mass ratio mergers. We define a burst efficiency that is useful to characterize the merger-driven star formation and test that it is insensitive to uncertainties in the feedback parametrization. In accord with previous work we find that the burst efficiency depends on the structure of the primary galaxy. In particular, the presence of a massive stellar bulge stabilizes the disc and suppresses merger-driven star formation for large mass ratio mergers. Direct, coplanar merging orbits produce the largest tidal disturbance and yield the most intense burst of star formation. Contrary to naive expectations, a more compact distribution of gas or an increased gas fraction both decrease the burst efficiency. Owing to the efficient feedback model and the newer version of smoothed particle hydrodynamics employed here, the burst efficiencies of the mergers presented here are smaller than in previous studies.
We present 3.5-7 pc resolution adaptive mesh refinement simulations of high-redshift disks including photoionization, radiation pressure, and supernovae feedback. Our modeling of radiation pressure ...determines the mass loading and initial velocity of winds from basic physical principles. We find that the giant clumps produce steady outflow rates comparable to and sometimes somewhat larger than their star formation rate, with velocities largely sufficient to escape the galaxy. The clumps also lose mass, especially old stars, by tidal stripping, and the stellar populations contained in the clumps hence remain relatively young (< or =200 Myr), as observed. The outflow and accretion rates have specific timescales of a few 10 sub(8) yr, as opposed to rapid and repeated dispersion and reformation of clumps. Our simulations produce gaseous outflows with velocities, densities, and mass loading consistent with observations, and at the same time suggest that the giant clumps survive for hundreds of Myr and complete their migration to the center of high-redshift galaxies.
We examine the fraction of massive ( ) compact star-forming galaxies (cSFGs) that host an active galactic nucleus (AGN) at . These cSFGs are likely the direct progenitors of the compact quiescent ...galaxies observed at this epoch, which are the first population of passive galaxies to appear in large numbers in the early Universe. We identify cSFGs that host an AGN using a combination of Hubble WFC3 imaging and Chandra X-ray observations in four fields: the Chandra Deep Fields, the Extended Groth Strip, and the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey field. We find that (65/166) of cSFGs at host an X-ray detected AGN. This fraction is 3.2 times higher than the incidence of AGN in extended star-forming galaxies with similar masses at these redshifts. This difference is significant at the level. Our results are consistent with models in which cSFGs are formed through a dissipative contraction that triggers a compact starburst and concurrent growth of the central black hole. We also discuss our findings in the context of cosmological galaxy evolution simulations that require feedback energy to rapidly quench cSFGs. We show that the AGN fraction peaks precisely where energy injection is needed to reproduce the decline in the number density of cSFGs with redshift. Our results suggest that the first abundant population of massive quenched galaxies emerged directly following a phase of elevated supermassive black hole growth and further hints at a possible connection between AGN and the rapid quenching of star formation in these galaxies.
ABSTRACT Although there has been much progress in understanding how galaxies evolve, we still do not understand how and when they stop forming stars and become quiescent. We address this by applying ...our galaxy spectral energy distribution models, which incorporate physically motivated star formation histories (SFHs) from cosmological simulations, to a sample of quiescent galaxies at . A total of 845 quiescent galaxies with multi-band photometry spanning rest-frame ultraviolet through near-infrared wavelengths are selected from the Cosmic Assembly Near-IR Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS) data set. We compute median SFHs of these galaxies in bins of stellar mass and redshift. At all redshifts and stellar masses, the median SFHs rise, reach a peak, and then decline to reach quiescence. At high redshift, we find that the rise and decline are fast, as expected, because the universe is young. At low redshift, the duration of these phases depends strongly on stellar mass. Low-mass galaxies ( ) grow on average slowly, take a long time to reach their peak of star formation ( Gyr), and then the declining phase is fast ( Gyr). Conversely, high-mass galaxies ( ) grow on average fast ( Gyr), and, after reaching their peak, decrease the star formation slowly ( ). These findings are consistent with galaxy stellar mass being a driving factor in determining how evolved galaxies are, with high-mass galaxies being the most evolved at any time (i.e., downsizing). The different durations we observe in the declining phases also suggest that low- and high-mass galaxies experience different quenching mechanisms, which operate on different timescales.

ABSTRACT
We address a simple model where the Kennicutt–Schmidt (KS) relation between the macroscopic densities of star formation rate (SFR, ρsfr) and gas (n) in galactic discs emerges from ...self-regulation of the SFR via supernova feedback. It arises from the physics of supernova bubbles, insensitive to the microscopic SFR recipe and not explicitly dependent on gravity. The key is that the filling factor of SFR-suppressed supernova bubbles self-regulates to a constant, f ∼ 0.5. Expressing the bubble fading radius and time in terms of n, the filling factor is $f\propto S\, n^{-s}$ with s ≃ 1.5, where S is the supernova rate density. A constant f thus refers to ρsfr ∝ n1.5, with a density-independent SFR efficiency per free-fall time ∼0.01. The self-regulation to f ∼ 0.5 and the convergence to a KS relation independent of the local SFR recipe are demonstrated in cosmological and isolated-galaxy simulations using different codes and recipes. In parallel, the spherical analysis of bubble evolution is generalized to clustered supernovae, analytically and via simulations, yielding s ≃ 1.5 ± 0.5. An analysis of photoionized bubbles about pre-supernova stars yields a range of KS slopes but the KS relation is dominated by the supernova bubbles. Superbubble blowouts may lead to an alternative self-regulation by outflows and recycling. While the model is oversimplified, its simplicity and validity in the simulations may argue that it captures the origin of the KS relation.
Abstract
We explore observational and theoretical constraints on how galaxies might transition between the ‘star-forming main sequence’ (SFMS) and varying ‘degrees of quiescence’ out to z = 3. Our ...analysis is focused on galaxies with stellar mass M* > 1010 M⊙, and is enabled by GAMA and CANDELS observations, a semi-analytic model (SAM) of galaxy formation, and a cosmological hydrodynamical ‘zoom in’ simulation with momentum-driven AGN feedback. In both the observations and the SAM, transition galaxies tend to have intermediate Sérsic indices, half-light radii, and surface stellar mass densities compared to star-forming and quiescent galaxies out to z = 3. We place an observational upper limit on the average population transition time-scale as a function of redshift, finding that the average high-redshift galaxy is on a ‘fast track’ for quenching whereas the average low-redshift galaxy is on a ‘slow track’ for quenching. We qualitatively identify four physical origin scenarios for transition galaxies in the SAM: oscillations on the SFMS, slow quenching, fast quenching, and rejuvenation. Quenching time-scales in both the SAM and the hydrodynamical simulation are not fast enough to reproduce the quiescent population that we observe at z ∼ 3. In the SAM, we do not find a clear-cut morphological dependence of quenching time-scales, but we do predict that the mean stellar ages, cold gas fractions, SMBH (supermassive black hole) masses and halo masses of transition galaxies tend to be intermediate relative to those of star-forming and quiescent galaxies at z < 3.
Abstract The observed rest-UV luminosity function at cosmic dawn ( z ∼ 8–14) measured by JWST revealed an excess of UV-luminous galaxies relative to many prelaunch theoretical predictions. A high ...star formation efficiency (SFE) and a top-heavy initial mass function (IMF) are among the mechanisms proposed for explaining this excess. Although a top-heavy IMF has been proposed for its ability to increase the light-to-mass ratio (Ψ UV ), the resulting enhanced radiative pressure from young stars could decrease the SFE, potentially driving galaxy luminosities back down. In this Letter, we use idealized radiation hydrodynamic simulations of star cluster formation to explore the effects of a top-heavy IMF on the SFE of clouds typical of the high-pressure conditions found at these redshifts. We find that the SFE in star clusters with solar-neighborhood-like dust abundance decreases with increasingly top-heavy IMFs—by ∼20% for an increase of a factor of 4 in Ψ UV and by 50% for a factor of ∼10 in Ψ UV . However, we find that an expected decrease in the dust-to-gas ratio (∼0.01 × solar) at these redshifts can completely compensate for the enhanced light output. This leads to a (cloud-scale; ∼10 pc) SFE that is ≳70% even for a factor of 10 increase in Ψ UV , implying that highly efficient star formation is unavoidable for high surface density and low-metallicity conditions. Our results suggest that a top-heavy IMF, if present, likely coexists with efficient star formation in these galaxies.
We investigate the origin of the relations between stellar mass and optical circular velocity for early-type galaxies (ETGs) and late-type galaxies (LTGs) - the Faber-Jackson (FJ) and Tully-Fisher ...(TF) relations. We combine measurements of dark halo masses (from satellite kinematics and weak lensing), and the distribution of baryons in galaxies (from a new compilation of galaxy scaling relations), with constraints on dark halo structure from cosmological simulations. The principal unknowns are the halo response to galaxy formation and the stellar initial mass function (IMF). The slopes of the TF and FJ relations are naturally reproduced for a wide range of halo response and IMFs. However, models with a universal IMF and universal halo response cannot simultaneously reproduce the zero-points of both the TF and FJ relations. For a model with a universal Chabrier IMF, LTGs require halo expansion, while ETGs require halo contraction. A Salpeter IMF is permitted for high-mass (σ≳ 180 km s−1) ETGs, but is inconsistent for intermediate masses, unless V
circ(R
e)/σe≳ 1.6. If the IMF is universal and close to Chabrier, we speculate that the presence of a major merger may be responsible for the contraction in ETGs while clumpy accreting streams and/or feedback leads to expansion in LTGs. Alternatively, a recently proposed variation in the IMF disfavours halo contraction in both types of galaxies. Finally we show that our models naturally reproduce flat and featureless circular velocity profiles within the optical regions of galaxies without fine-tuning.
We study in simple terms the role of feedback in establishing the scaling relations of low-surface-brightness (LSB) and dwarf galaxies with stellar masses in the range 6 × 105≤M*≤ 3 × 1010 M⊙. These ...galaxies – as measured, for example, from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and in the Local Group – show tight correlations of internal velocity, metallicity and surface brightness (or radius) with M*. They define a fundamental line which distinguishes them from the brighter galaxies of high surface brightness and metallicity. The idealized model assumes spherical collapse of cold dark matter (CDM) haloes to virial equilibrium and angular momentum conservation. The relations for bright galaxies are reproduced by assuming that M* is a constant fraction of the halo mass M. The upper bound to the low-luminosity LSBs coincides with the virial velocity of haloes in which supernova feedback could significantly suppress star formation, V < 100 km s−1. We argue that the energy fed to the gas obeys ESN∝M* despite the radiative losses, and equate it with the binding energy of the gas to obtain M*/M∝V2. This idealized model provides surprisingly good fits to the scaling relations of low-luminosity LSBs and dwarfs, which indicates that supernova feedback had a primary role in determining the fundamental line. The apparent lower bound for galaxies at V∼ 10 km s−1 may be caused by the cooling barrier at T∼ 104 K. Some fraction of the dark haloes may show no stars as a result of complete gas removal, either by supernova winds from neighbouring galaxies or by radiative feedback after cosmological reionization at zion. Radiative feedback may also explain the distinction between dwarf spheroidals (dE) and irregulars (dI), where the dEs, typically of V≤ 30 km s−1, form stars before zion and are then cleaned out of gas, whereas the dIs, with V > 30 km s−1, retain gas-rich discs with feedback-regulated star formation.
