Context.
The discovery of Proxima b marked one of the most important milestones in exoplanetary science in recent years. Yet the limited precision of the available radial velocity data and the ...difficulty in modelling the stellar activity calls for a confirmation of the Earth-mass planet.
Aims.
We aim to confirm the presence of Proxima b using independent measurements obtained with the new ESPRESSO spectrograph, and refine the planetary parameters taking advantage of its improved precision.
Methods.
We analysed 63 spectroscopic ESPRESSO observations of Proxima (Gl 551) taken during 2019. We obtained radial velocity measurements with a typical radial velocity photon noise of 26 cm s
−1
. We combined these data with archival spectroscopic observations and newly obtained photometric measurements to model the stellar activity signals and disentangle them from planetary signals in the radial velocity (RV) data. We ran a joint Markov chain Monte Carlo analysis on the time series of the RV and full width half maximum of the cross-correlation function to model the planetary and stellar signals present in the data, applying Gaussian process regression to deal with the stellar activity signals.
Results.
We confirm the presence of Proxima b independently in the ESPRESSO data and in the combined ESPRESSO+ HARPS+UVES dataset. The ESPRESSO data on its own shows Proxima b at a period of 11.218 ± 0.029 days, with a minimum mass of 1.29 ± 0.13
M
⊕
. In the combined dataset we measure a period of 11.18427 ± 0.00070 days with a minimum mass of 1.173 ± 0.086
M
⊕
. We get a clear measurement of the stellar rotation period (87 ± 12 d) and its induced RV signal, but no evidence of stellar activity as a potential cause for the 11.2 days signal. We find some evidence for the presence of a second short-period signal, at 5.15 days with a semi-amplitude of only 40 cm s
−1
. If caused by a planetary companion, it would correspond to a minimum mass of 0.29 ± 0.08
M
⊕
. We find that forthe case of Proxima, the full width half maximum of the cross-correlation function can be used as a proxy for the brightness changes and that its gradient with time can be used to successfully detrend the RV data from part of the influence of stellar activity. The activity-induced RV signal in the ESPRESSO data shows a trend in amplitude towards redder wavelengths. Velocities measured using the red end of the spectrograph are less affected by activity, suggesting that the stellar activity is spot dominated. This could be used to create differential RVs that are activity dominated and can be used to disentangle activity-induced and planetary-induced signals. The data collected excludes the presence of extra companions with masses above 0.6
M
⊕
at periods shorter than 50 days.
Aims.
We report on ESPRESSO high-resolution transmission spectroscopic observations of two primary transits of the highly irradiated, ultra-hot Jupiter-sized planet, WASP-76b. We investigated the ...presence of several key atomic and molecular features of interest that may reveal the atmospheric properties of the planet.
Methods.
We extracted two transmission spectra of WASP-76b with
R
≈ 140 000 using a procedure that allowed us to process the full ESPRESSO wavelength range (3800–7880 Å) simultaneously. We observed that at a high signal-to-noise ratio, the continuum of ESPRESSO spectra shows ‘wiggles’, which are likely caused by an interference pattern outside the spectrograph. To search for the planetary features, we visually analysed the extracted transmission spectra and cross-correlated the observations against theoretical spectra of different atomic and molecular species.
Results.
The following atomic features are detected: Li
I
, Na
I
, Mg
I
, Ca
II
, Mn
I
, K
I
, and Fe
I
. All are detected with a confidence level between 9.2
σ
(Na
I
) and 2.8
σ
(Mg
I
). We did not detect the following species: Ti
I
, Cr
I
, Ni
I
, TiO, VO, and ZrO. We impose the following 1
σ
upper limits on their detectability: 60, 77, 122, 6, 8, and 8 ppm, respectively.
Conclusions.
We report the detection of Li
I
on WASP-76b for the first time. In addition, we confirm the presence of Na
I
and Fe
I
as previously reported in the literature. We show that the procedure employed in this work can detect features down to the level of ~0.1% in the transmission spectrum and ~10 ppm by means of a cross-correlation method. We discuss the presence of neutral and singly ionised features in the atmosphere of WASP-76b.
Observations in extremely large telescopes will rely on adaptive corrections. To reduce the size and complexity of the instruments observing over large fields, the telescope should correct not only ...fast telescope misalignments and guiding errors, but also the bulk of the errors introduced by the atmosphere. This paper describes an optical design with five mirrors, three of them powered, which fulfils this requirement. The optical system is effectively diffraction limited over a field of 10 arcmin, also delivering very good image quality of laser guide stars. In addition, it offers the possibility of installing a large field atmospheric dispersion corrector and the freedom to switch between a large number of foci by changing the focal length. A weak field curvature concentric to the exit pupil eases the design of instrumentation.
The redshifts of all cosmologically distant sources are expected to experience a small, systematic drift as a function of time due to the evolution of the Universe's expansion rate. A measurement of ...this effect would represent a direct and entirely model-independent determination of the expansion history of the Universe over a redshift range that is inaccessible to other methods. Here we investigate the impact of the next generation of Extremely Large Telescopes on the feasibility of detecting and characterizing the cosmological redshift drift. We consider the Lyα forest in the redshift range 2 < z < 5 and other absorption lines in the spectra of high-redshift QSOs as the most suitable targets for a redshift drift experiment. Assuming photon-noise-limited observations and using extensive Monte Carlo simulations we determine the accuracy to which the redshift drift can be measured from the Lyα forest as a function of signal-to-noise ratio and redshift. Based on this relation and using the brightness and redshift distributions of known QSOs we find that a 42-m telescope is capable of unambiguously detecting the redshift drift over a period of ∼20 yr using 4000 h of observing time. Such an experiment would provide independent evidence for the existence of dark energy without assuming spatial flatness, using any other cosmological constraints or making any other astrophysical assumption.

The bright star

Men was chosen as the first target for a radial velocity follow-up to test the performance of ESPRESSO, the new high-resolution spectrograph at the European Southern ...Observatory’s Very Large Telescope. The star hosts a multi-planet system (a transiting 4
M
⊕
planet at ~0.07 au and a sub-stellar companion on a ~2100-day eccentric orbit), which is particularly suitable for a precise multi-technique characterization.
Aims.
With the new ESPRESSO observations, which cover a time span of 200 days, we aim to improve the precision and accuracy of the planet parameters and search for additional low-mass companions. We also take advantage of the new photometric transits of
π
Men c observed by TESS over a time span that overlaps with that of the ESPRESSO follow-up campaign.
Methods.
We analysed the enlarged spectroscopic and photometric datasets and compared the results to those in the literature. We further characterized the system by means of absolute astrometry with H
IPPARCOS
and
Gaia
. We used the high-resolution spectra of ESPRESSO for an independent determination of the stellar fundamental parameters.
Results.
We present a precise characterization of the planetary system around
π
Men. The ESPRESSO radial velocities alone (37 nightly binned data with typical uncertainty of 10 cm s
−1
) allow for a precise retrieval of the Doppler signal induced by
π
Men c. The residuals show a root mean square of 1.2 m s
−1
, which is half that of the HARPS data; based on the residuals, we put limits on the presence of additional low-mass planets (e.g. we can exclude companions with a minimum mass less than ~2
M
⊕
within the orbit of
π
Men c). We improve the ephemeris of
π
Men c using 18 additional TESS transits, and, in combination with the astrometric measurements, we determine the inclination of the orbital plane of
π
Men b with high precision (
i
b
=45.8
−1.1
+1.4
deg). This leads to the precise measurement of its absolute mass
m
b
=14.1
−0.4
+0.5
M
Jup
, indicating that
π
Men b can be classified as a brown dwarf.
Conclusions.
The
π
Men system represents a nice example of the extreme precision radial velocities that can be obtained with ESPRESSO for bright targets. Our determination of the 3D architecture of the
π
Men planetary system and the high relative misalignment of the planetary orbital planes put constraints on and challenge the theories of the formation and dynamical evolution of planetary systems. The accurate measurement of the mass of
π
Men b contributes to make the brown dwarf desert a bit greener.
Context. The tip-tilt stabilisation system of the 1.8 m Auxiliary Telescopes of the Very Large Telescope Interferometer was never dimensioned for robust fringe tracking, except when atmospheric ...seeing conditions are excellent. Aims. Increasing the level of wavefront correction at the telescopes is expected to improve the coupling into the single-mode fibres of the instruments, and enable robust fringe tracking even in degraded conditions. Methods. We deployed a new adaptive optics module for interferometry (NAOMI) on the Auxiliary Telescopes. Results. We present its design, performance, and effect on the observations that are carried out with the interferometric instruments.
We describe the design, development, and performance of HAWK-I, the new High-Acuity Wide-field K-band Imager for ESO's Very Large Telescope, which is equipped with a mosaic of four 2 k $\times$ 2 k ...arrays and operates from 0.9-2.4 μm over $7.5\arcmin \times 7.5\arcmin$ with 0.1´´ pixels. A novel feature is the use of all reflective optics that, together with filters of excellent throughput and detectors of high quantum efficiency, has yielded an extremely high throughput. Commissioning and science verification observations have already delivered a variety of excellent and deep images that demonstrate its high scientific potential for addressing important astrophysical questions of current interest.
Context. Spectra of composite systems (e.g., spectroscopic binaries) contain spatial information that can be retrieved by measuring the radial velocities (i.e., Doppler shifts) of the components in ...four observations with the slit rotated by 90 degrees in the sky. Aims. We aim at developing a framework to describe the method and to test its capabilities in a real case. Methods. By using basic concepts of slit spectroscopy we show that the geometry of composite systems can be reliably retrieved by measuring only radial velocity differences taken with different slit angles. The spatial resolution is determined by the precision with which differential radial velocities can be measured. Results. We use the UVES spectrograph at the VLT to observe the known spectroscopic binary star HD 188088 (HIP 97944), which has a maximum expected separation of 23 milli-arcseconds. We measure an astrometric signal in radial velocity of 276 m s-1 , which corresponds to a separation between the two components at the time of the observations of 18 ± 2 milli-arcseconds. The stars were aligned east-west. We describe a simple optical device to simultaneously record pairs of spectra rotated by 180 degrees, thus reducing systematic effects. We compute and provide the function expressing the shift of the centroid of a seeing-limited image in the presence of a narrow slit. Conclusions. The proposed technique is simple to use and our test shows that it is amenable for deriving astrometry with milli-arcsecond accuracy or better, beyond the diffraction limit of the telescope. The technique can be further improved by using simple devices to simultaneously record the spectra with 180 degrees angles. This device together with an optimized data analysis will further reduce the measurement errors. With tachoastrometry, radial velocities and astrometric positions can be measured simultaneously for many double line system binaries in an easy way. The method is not limited to binary stars, but can be applied to any astrophysical configuration in which spectral lines are generated by separate (non-rotational symmetric) regions.
CUBES is a high-efficiency, medium-resolution (
R
∼20,000) ground based UV (300–400 nm) spectrograph, to be installed in the cassegrain focus of one of ESO’s VLT unit telescopes in 2017/18. The CUBES ...project is a joint venture between ESO and IAG/USP, and LNA/MCTI. CUBES will provide access to a wealth of new and relevant information for stellar as well as extragalactic sources. Main science cases include the study of beryllium and heavy elements in metal-poor stars, the direct determination of carbon, nitrogen and oxygen abundances by study of molecular bands in the UV range, as well as the study of active galactic nuclei and the quasar absorption lines. With a streamlined modern instrument design, high efficiency dispersing elements and UV-sensitive detectors, it will give a significant gain in sensitivity over existing ground based medium-high resolution spectrographs, enabling vastly increased sample sizes accessible to the astronomical community. We present here a brief overview of the project including the status, science cases and a discussion of the design options.
