CORRELATION experiment has been performed at INFN-LNS of Catania, using the 4π multi-detector CHIMERA, with the aim of exploring correlations between two and multi light particle produced in 12C+24Mg ...collisions at 35 AMeV. Particular attention has been paid to the decay mechanisms of Hoyle state, an excited resonant state of 12C produced via the triple-α process and characterized by a pronounced molecular like structure with three α particles. The study of the Hoyle state is essential for nucleosynthesis, but it also represents a clearly isolated state that can be studied as a three-α cluster system.
The excitation of the Pygmy Dipole Resonance (PDR) in the 68Ni nucleus, above the neutron emission threshold, via an isoscalar probe has been observed for the first time. The excitation has been ...produced in reactions where a 68Ni beam, obtained by the fragmentation of a 70Zn primary beam at INFN-LNS, impinged on a 12C target. The γ-ray decay was detected using the CsI(Tl) detectors of the CHIMERA multidetector sphere. The 68Ni isotope as well as other heavy ion fragments were detected using the FARCOS array. The population of the PDR was evidenced by comparing the detected γ-ray energy spectra with statistical code calculations. The isotopic resolution of the detection system allows also to directly compare neutron decay channels with the 68Ni channel, better evidencing the PDR decay response function. This comparison allows also the extraction of the PDR cross section and the relative γ-ray angular distribution. The measured γ-ray angular distribution confirms the E1 character of the transition. The γ decay cross section for the excitation of the PDR was measured to be 0.32 mb with a 18% of statistical error.

The 4He + 4He ...→ 4He + 4He* → 4He + 3H + 1H and 4He + 4He → 4He + 4He* → 4He + 3He + n reactions were measured simultaneously by detecting the 4He particles at the MAGNEX magnetic spectrometer in coincidence with the 3H and 3He at the OSCAR silicon telescope. The main concept of the experiment is described and the data reduction strategy is reported.
Abstract A systematic analysis of the data obtained by the FAZIA collaboration during a recent experiment with a neutron rich projectile is presented. The main goal was to compare the experimental ...results with the HIPSE event generator simulations to investigate the influence of the neutron rich entrance channel on the quasi-projectile fragment properties. The full isotopic range of charged particles detected in this experiment was within the limit of the resolution of the FAZIA detector. A majority of quasi-projectile fragments were detected thanks to the forward angular acceptance of the experimental setup which was confirmed through the HIPSE calculations. Essentially, the lowering of N / Z of quasi-projectile fragments with the beam energy was found to be present since the initial phase of the reaction. Thus, pre-equilibrium neutron emissions might be a possible candidate to explain such an effect.
The 4He(4He,4He)4He* inelastic scattering was investigated at the MAGNEX facility of INFN - LNS, aiming at shedding light on the characteristics of the isoscalar monopole resonance of 4He which lies ...at an energy slightly higher than the proton emission threshold and slightly lower than the neutron emission threshold. A complementary elastic scattering measurement was also performed to study the initial state interaction and set accurate coupled channel calculations. Here, the experimental setup, the data reduction and the theoretical interpretation strategy are briefly described.
Two and multi particle correlations from the decay of sources produced in 12C+24Mg and 12C+208Pb collisions at E=35 AMeV have been studied by using the forward part (1° < θlab < 30°) of the CHIMERA ...multi-detector. Correlations and invariant mass spectroscopy are used to explore simultaneous and sequential decays of resonances in light isotopes with Z∼3-6, produced in peripheral collisions via the break-up of excited quasi-projectiles. Among them we mention 5Li, 6Li, 6Be, 8Be and the astrophysically important state in 12C decaying into three alpha particles. Results and future perspectives at the INFN-LNS will be presented.

The emission of the pre-equilibrium particles during nuclear collisions at moderate beam energies is still an open question. This influences the properties of the compound nucleus but also changes ...the interpretation of the quasi-fission process. A systematic analysis of the data obtained by the FAZIA collaboration during a recent experiment with a neutron rich projectile is presented. The full range of charged particles detected in the experiment is within the limit of isotopic resolution of the FAZIA detector. Quasi-projectile (QP) fragments were detected in majority thanks to the forward angular acceptance of the experimental setup which was confirmed by introducing cuts based on the HIPSE event generator calculations. The main goal was to compare the experimental results with the HIPSE simulations after introducing these cuts to investigate the influence of the n-rich entrance channel on the QP fragment properties. More specifically, the lowering of N/Z of QP fragments with beam energy was found to be present since the initial phase of the reaction. Thus, pre-equilibrium emissions might be a possible candidate to explain such an effect.
The gamma decay of the first excited 4.44MeV 2+level of 12C, populated by inelastic scattering of proton and 16O beams at various energies was studied in order to test γ-ray detection efficiency and ...the quality of angular distribution information given by the CsI(Tl) detectors of the 4π CHIMERA array. The γ-decay was measured in coincidence with ejectile scattered particles in an approximately 4π geometry allowing to extract the angular distribution in the reference frame of recoiling 12C target. The typical sin2(2θ) behavior of angular distribution was observed in the case of 16O beam. Besides that, for the proton beam, in order to explain the observed distribution, the addition of an incoherent flat contribution was required. This latter is the effect of proton spin flip events allowing the population of M=±1 magnetic substates, that is not possible in reactions induced by 16O beam. A comparison with previously collected data, obtained measuring only in and out of plane proton-γ-ray coincidences, confirms the good quality of the angular distribution information given by the apparatus. Possible applications with radioactive beams are outlined.
