Currently there is much discussion regarding the impact of climate change and the vagaries of the weather, in particular extreme weather events. The Himalayas form the main natural water resource of ...the major river systems of the Indian region. We present a brief review of the available information and data for extreme rainfall events that were experienced in different sectors of the Himalayas during the last 137 years (1871–2007). Across the entire Himalayas, from east to west, there are now 822 rainfall stations. There was an increase in the rainfall station network from 1947 onwards, especially in the Nepal and Bhutan Himalayas. Extreme one-day rainfall has been picked out for each station irrespective of the period for which data are available. The decadal distribution of these extreme one-day rainfalls shows that there is a considerable increase in the frequencies during the decades 1951–1960 to 1991–2000, whereas there is a sudden decrease in the frequencies in the present decade during 2001–2007, indicating the need to understand the response of the systems to global change and the associated physical and climatological changes. Cyanobacterial strains were isolated, and identified from rhizospheric soil and plant parts of rice varieties from Ludhiana, Punjab during kharif 2018. Out of the total 18 strains, 16 were ...heterocystous and 2 were non-hetercocystous. Seven were isolated from rice variety PB-1121 while 11 were from variety Parman-126. These belonged to four genera, Nostoc (13), Anabaena and Phormidium (2 each); and Trichormus (one).These were characterized for cell dry weight, pigments and total soluble proteins which showed a significant variation. Pigments ranged from 1.51 μg/ml to 11.63 μg/ml (chlorophyll), 0.41 μg/ml to 11.06 μg/ml (carotenoids), 1.13 μg/ml to 26.28 μg/ml (phycocyanin), 0.15 μg/ml to 33.23 μg/ml (phycoerythrin), 0.16 μg/ml to 11.18 μg/ml (allophycocyanin). Total phycobili proteins varied from a highest of 54.31 μg/ml to the lowest of 2.95 μg/ml, whereas, total soluble proteins ranged as 0.29 mg/ml to 0.70 mg/ml. Nitrogenase activity was measured as Acetylene Reduction Assay and this parameter also varied amongst the strains. Extracellular ammonia release varied as lowest of 11.10 μmole NH4 +/ml to the highest of 229.70 μmole NH4 +/ml, whereas, indole acetic acid production ranged from 7.45 μg/ml to 66.00 μg/ml.On the basis of efficient plant growth promoting parameters, these cyanobacterial strains can be studied for their possible positive influence on the performance of rice crop, which may, in turn, help in nitrogen economy after testing under pot culture and field evaluations as per required procedure and guidelines.
A significant part of northern India is covered by the Himalayas, where a number of major Indian rivers originate. In the present study, a detailed analysis of rainstorms that affected the northwest ...region of the Himalayas has been made to assess the orographic effect of the Himalayas on precipitation in this region during the 135 years from 1875 to 2010. The study showed that the northwest Himalayas have experienced five most-severe rainstorms whose rain depths have not been surpassed so far. These severe rainstorms caused heavy to very heavy rainfall over the region that led to tremendous destruction to crops, communications, and livestock. Severe rainstorms have not occurred during the 2001–10 decade. It is also noticed that severe floods in this region have not occurred because of a “break monsoon situation” in the middle or eastern Himalayas.

The Indian sub-continent being located in the heart of the summermonsoon belt, receives in most parts more than 75% of its annual rainfall during the fourmonsoon months of June to September. As the ...bulk of summer monsoon rainfall occurs withina period of four months, naturally majority of floods occur in Indian rivers during thisseason only. The ground conditions also help in generating high percentage of run-offbecause of the antecedent wet conditions caused by rainy spells occurring within the monsoonperiod itself. Besides mentioning different weather systems, which cause heavy rainfall and consequentfloods, a detailed discussion of 15 years' floods in different river systems has alsobeen given in the article. This study has shown that the flood problem in India is mostly confinedto the states located in the Indo-Gangetic plains, northeast India and occasionally in therivers of Central India.PUBLICATION ABSTRACT
Background/Aims
: Angiogenesis is essential in liver regeneration. However, only little is known about sinusoidal endothelial cell proliferation and the role of different angiogenic growth factors ...and their receptors during regeneration.
Methods
: Seventy percent hepatectomy was carried out on male rats. Serial changes in endothelial cell proliferation were evaluated by immunohistochemistry. The mRNA expressions of angiogenic growth factors (vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and angiopoietins 1 and 2) and their receptors (flt-1, flk-1, Tie-1 and Tie-2) in the whole liver were evaluated by semi-quantitative RT-PCR.
Results
: Significant elevation of endothelial cell proliferation started at 48 h and peaked at 72 h after hepatectomy. The ratio of sinusoids to liver tissue area initially decreased at 72 h, and thereafter, significantly increased at 96 h. VEGF related factors had early peaks, which coincided with the endothelial proliferation. flt-1, flk-1 and VEGF expressions peaked at 24, 48 and 72 h, respectively. angiopoietin/Tie factors peaked at 96 h, except Ang-2, which gradually increased and peaked at 168 h.
Conclusions
: During liver regeneration, hepatocyte proliferation was followed by endothelial cell proliferation. The VEGF family and angiopoietin/Tie system may have distinct roles in angiogenesis, with an enhanced expression of the VEGF family in the early phase of regeneration followed by angiopoietin/Tie expression.

A flood study of the Himalayan rivers has been attempted on the basis of gauge/discharge data from 27 sites on major tributaries of the Ganga between 1986 and 1999. This study has shown that the ...Ghaghra, Gandak, and Kosi are the most important tributaries of the Ganga and their flood waters should be harnessed for developmental purposes to save the Indo-Gangetic plains from the recurrence of yearly floods. It was also found that some of the sites on these rivers have recorded floods more than 100 to 150 times during the 14-year period.
Background/Aims: Angiogenesis plays an important role in tumor growth and metastasis. It is regulated by angiogenic factors. Thymidine phosphorylase (platelet-derived endothelial cell growth factor) ...is one such factor. Although the significance of platelet-derived endothelial cell growth factor has been studied for several types of tumor, the expression of platelet-derived endothelial cell growth factor and its correlation with microvessel density or clinicopathological factors in hepatocellular carcinoma are unknown. We evaluated microvessel density and platelet-derived endothelial cell growth factor expression in hepatocellular carcinoma to determine whether microvessel density and platelet-derived endothelial cell growth factor expression are correlated with the clinicopathological factors of hepatocellular carcinoma.
Methods: Using immunohistochemical staining with anti-platelet-derived endothelial cell growth factor antibody and the ELISA method, we evaluated the correlation among platelet-derived endothelial cell growth factor expression, microvessel density and clinicopathological factors in 84 hepatocellular carcinoma patients. Microvessels were stained with anti-human von Willebrand factor (anti-Factor VIII) and anti-CD34.
Results: In the surrounding liver, there was a significant correlation between microvessel density and platelet-derived endothelial cell growth factor expression (
p=0.002), and hepatitis C virus-positive livers had higher microvessel densities than otherwise (
p=0.003). However, this correlation was not found for hepatocellular carcinoma, but hepatitis C virus-positive tumors had higher expression of platelet-derived endothelial cell growth factor (
p=0.018). Microvessel density in hepatocellular carcinoma obtained by Factor VIII staining inversely affected the recurrence-free survival rate (
p=0.0416), but the microvessel density by CD34 staining was not a significant predictor.
Conclusion: This study indicates that platelet-derived endothelial cell growth factor may not be a major regulator of angiogenesis of hepatocellular carcinoma, but this enzyme may play an important role in hepatocarcinogenesis cooperating with hepatitis C virus. Also, the density, not of sinusoid-like vessels, but of larger vessels in hepatocellular carcinoma could be a prognostic factor for hepatocellular carcinoma.
