A joint Cuba-U.S. expedition was conducted May 14-June 12, 2017 to characterize for the first time the extent and health of mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs) along the entire coastline of Cuba. ...Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) dives at 36 sites confirmed the presence of MCE habitat along all coasts of Cuba. ROV dives covered 27 km, at depths of 25-188 m, and documented habitat and species with 103 hours of high-definition video and 21,146 digital images. A total of 477 taxa of benthic macrobiota and 178 fish taxa were identified, and 343 specimens of benthic invertebrates and algae were collected to verify taxonomy and assess population genetic structure. The primary geomorphological features were the Deep Island Slope (125- >150 m), Deep Fore-Reef Escarpment (the ‘Wall’, 50-125 m), and Deep Fore-Reef Slope (30-50 m). Most vertical surfaces of the Wall were covered with dense sponges, algae, octocorals, and black corals. Agaricia was the most abundant scleractinian genus on the Wall at depths of 50-75 m, and was observed to 122 m. Of the 2,240 sclerac- tinian colonies that were counted in this study, only 12 corals (0.53%, mainly Agaricia spp.) showed signs of bleaching, and one Agaricia had black band disease, comprising remarkably low disease prevalence. The most frequently recorded sponge genera were Xestospon- gia, Aplysina, and Agelas. At least 10 previously unknown sponge species were collected during the expedition. Sites outside of marine protected areas generally had lower fish abundances, a possible in- dicator of historical overfishing. Lionfish were observed at most sites but abundances were low compared to other Caribbean regions.

Spain is a country with an important flow of cruises in Europe. Since the restarting of cruise activity, 1,106 events with 12,134 confirmed cases of COVID-19 were reported from 21 ports. 72.3% of ...cases and 73.7% of events were registered in the Balearic Islands, Barcelona, Tenerife and Las Palmas, ports with the highest number of layovers and passengers. The events reported increased from October 2021, with a peak in January and April 2022. The cases raised later, in December 2021 with two peaks in January and April and a substantial increase in June 2022. The peak of January coincides with the peak of COVID-19 cases registered in Spain and Europe. The increases in April and June 2022 coincides with the Easter period and the beginning of summer holidays.
It has been reported that in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes, hyperglycaemia leads to progressive insulin resistance of the peripheral tissues. In this study, we tried to elucidate the effects ...of hyperglycaemia on insulin sensitivity and insulin signalling in ovariectomized (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. In addition, we attempted to demonstrate the role of 17{szligbeta}-oestradiol and progesterone on insulin sensitivity, focusing on their effects on key proteins of skeletal muscle, insulin receptor (IR) and glucose transporter-4 (Glut-4). Our results show that hyperglycaemia could modulate insulin signalling, at the IR and Glut-4 level, in different ways depending on exposure time. 17{szligbeta}-Oestradiol and progesterone have different effects on insulin signalling. 17{szligbeta}-Oestradiol treatment improves insulin sensitivity, but its action is dependent on the exposure time and its plasma level. During the early period of treatment (days 6-11), this hormone counteracts the effects of hyperglycaemia downstream of the IR, whereas during the later period of treatment (days 11-16), it may counteract the effects of hyperglycaemia by modulating IR relative tyrosine phosphorylation. By contrast, progesterone only improves insulin sensitivity during the early period of treatment (days 6-11), and this effect is not associated with changes in IR and Glut-4 content. Both hormones have a protective role in skeletal muscle against the effects of glucose toxicity, but their effects begin at different stages of treatment. These new findings improve our understanding of insulin resistance in type 1 diabetes mellitus and of the risk/benefit ratio when 17{szligbeta}-oestradiol and progesterone are used in oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy taken by menopausal women with controlled type 1 diabetes mellitus.
AbstractIntroductionNDM-1 carbapenemase is spreading rapidly all over the world, but this metallo-beta-lactamase has just been detected for the first time in an Acinetobacter baumannii (Ab) isolate ...of the ST85 clone in Spain. The aim of this study was to characterize a NDM-1-producing carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii (CR-Ab) isolate submitted to the Andalusian PIRASOA infection prevention program referral laboratory. MethodsCarbapenemases were detected by PCR and Sanger DNA sequencing. Whole genome sequencing was performed by NGS (Miseq, Illumina). Resistance genes were identified with RESfinder, while MLSTfinder was used for sequence typing (ST). The genetic location of blaNDM-1 was determined by nuclease S-1/PFGE/hybridization with specific probe. ResultsThe isolate was susceptible to amikacin and tigecycline and belonged to the ST85 clone. blaOXA-94 and blaNDM-1 were identified by PCR and Sanger DNA sequencing, respectively. The resistance genes aadB, blaADC-25, blaNDM-1, blaOXA-94, msr(E), mph(E) and floR,sul2 were identified by NGS. The chromosome of the isolate contained a defective Tn125 transposon with blaNDM-1 flanked by the insertion sequences IS AbA125 and IS Aba14. The blaNDM-1 gene was only detected in the chromosomal DNA. ConclusionThis is the first time that blaNDM-1 has been detected and characterized in a blaOXA-94-producing CR-Ab isolate belonging to the ST85 clone in Spain.
The aim of the study is to know the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection in patients and professional staff of a medium or long-stay hospital during the peak period of the pandemic in Spain, spring ...2020.
At the end of February 2020, we developed at the hospital a strategy to diagnose the SARS-CoV-2 infection consisting of complementing the realization of PCR tests at real time with a quick technique of lateral flow immunochromatography to detect IgG and IgM antibodies against the virus. We also developed a protocol to realize those diagnostic tests and considered an infection (current or past) a positive result in any of the above tests. We included 524 participants in the study (230 patients and 294 hospital staff), and divided them into hospital patients and Hemodialysis outpatients. Furthermore, we divided the hospital staff into healthcare and non-healthcare staff. The documented period was from March, 20
to April, 21
, 2020.
26 out of 230 patients tested positive in any of the diagnostic techniques (PCR, antibodies IgG, IgM) with a 11.30% prevalence. According to patients groups, we got a 14.38% prevalence in hospital patients vs. 5.95% in outpatients, with a significantly higher risk in admitted patients after adjustment for age and gender (OR=3,309, 95%CI: 1,154-9,495). 24 out of 294 hospital staff tested positive in any of the diagnostic techniques, with a 8.16% prevalence. According to the groups, we got a 8.91% prevalence in healthcare staff vs. 4.26% in non-healthcare staff. Thus, we do not see any statistically significant differences between hospital staff and patients as far as prevalence is concerned (P=0,391), (OR=2,200, 95%CI: 0,500-9,689).
The result of the study was a quite low prevalence rate of SARS-CoV-2 infection, in both patients and hospital staff, being the hospital patients' prevalence rate higher than the outpatients', and the healthcare staff higher than the non-healthcare's. Combining PCR tests (gold standard) with antibodies tests proved useful as a diagnostic strategy.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a change in healthcare models. The aim of this study was to evaluate patient acceptance of telehealth as an alternative to physical consultations, and to identify ...factors predicting higher satisfaction. This was an observational, cross-sectional, multi-center, international study. All consecutive patients for whom telehealth was used in consultations between April and July 2020 were considered for inclusion. The validated Telehealth Usability Questionnaire (TUQ) was used as a model to measure patient acceptance. Overall, 747 patients were observed, of whom 721 agreed to participate (96·5%). The TUQ showed that 86·9% of patients agreed that telehealth was useful; 85·2% supported the interface quality and 81·4% endorsed the interaction quality. Patients aged > 60 y were less likely to agree with the use of telehealth (p < 0·05). A web-based prediction tool was generated to calculate global satisfaction and to identify patients more likely to feel comfortable with telehealth. Telehealth is feasible and allows consultations that are satisfactory for patients. Technological advancements could ease safe implementation of telehealth into everyday practice. Adequate patient selection can be useful to ensure that the ideal strategy is used for each individual during and after the pandemic.
