This short communication describes the establishment of a two‐dimensional electrophoresis (2‐DE) reference map of nuclear proteins isolated from human liver. The human liver nuclei 2‐DE reference map ...contains 1497 spots. In an initial identification study using peptide mass fingerprinting as a means of protein identification we were able to identify 26 spots corresponding to 15 different proteins. The human liver nuclei 2‐DE reference map is now included in the SWISS‐2DPAGE database, which can be accessed through the ExPASy server (http://www.expasy.ch/ch2d/).
Nodal cilia dynamics is a key factor for left/right axis determination in mouse embryos through the induction of a leftward fluid flow. So far it has not been clearly established how such dynamics is ...able to induce the asymmetric leftward flow within the node. Herein we propose that an asymmetric two-phase nonplanar beating cilia dynamics that involves the bending of the ciliar axoneme is responsible for the leftward fluid flow. We support our proposal with a host of hydrodynamic arguments, in silico experiments and in vivo video microscopy data in wild-type embryos and
inv mutants. Our phenomenological modeling approach underscores how the asymmetry and speed of the flow depends on different relevant parameters. In addition, we discuss how the combination of internal and external mechanisms might cause the two-phase beating cilia dynamics.
We give an overview and describe the rationale, methods, and first results from NIRCam images of the JWST "Prime Extragalactic Areas for Reionization and Lensing Science" ("PEARLS") project. PEARLS ...uses up to eight NIRCam filters to survey several prime extragalactic survey areas: two fields at the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP); seven gravitationally lensing clusters; two high redshift proto-clusters; and the iconic backlit VV 191 galaxy system to map its dust attenuation. PEARLS also includes NIRISS spectra for one of the NEP fields and NIRSpec spectra of two high-redshift quasars. The main goal of PEARLS is to study the epoch of galaxy assembly, AGN growth, and First Light. Five fields, the JWST NEP Time-Domain Field (TDF), IRAC Dark Field (IDF), and three lensing clusters, will be observed in up to four epochs over a year. The cadence and sensitivity of the imaging data are ideally suited to find faint variable objects such as weak AGN, high-redshift supernovae, and cluster caustic transits. Both NEP fields have sightlines through our Galaxy, providing significant numbers of very faint brown dwarfs whose proper motions can be studied. Observations from the first spoke in the NEP TDF are public. This paper presents our first PEARLS observations, their NIRCam data reduction and analysis, our first object catalogs, the 0.9-4.5 \(\mu\)m galaxy counts and Integrated Galaxy Light. We assess the JWST sky brightness in 13 NIRCam filters, yielding our first constraints to diffuse light at 0.9-4.5 {\mu}m. PEARLS is designed to be of lasting benefit to the community.
Post-concussion symptoms often occur after TBI, persist and cause disabilities. The Rivermead Post-Concussion Symptoms Questionnaire (RPQ) is widely used in this population, but little is known about ...the comparability of the symptoms over time, i.e., longitudinal measurement invariance (MI). The objectives of this study were to analyze the longitudinal MI of RPQ symptoms from three to twelve months after TBI and to find factors related to RPQ symptoms. The study involved 1023 individuals after TBI who took part in the Collaborative European NeuroTrauma Effectiveness Research in TBI (CENTER-TBI) study and completed the RPQ at three, six and twelve months post-injury. Longitudinal confirmatory factor analysis showed that the three-factor structure (somatic, emotional and cognitive) remains stable within one year after TBI. Linear mixed models revealed that sex, injury cause and prior psychiatric problems were related to the RPQ three-factor structure as well as to the RPQ total score. The study strengthens evidence for the RPQ’s factorial structure stability within one year after TBI and identifies sex, injury cause and prior psychiatric problems as important factors that may help clinicians to prevent future complications of symptomatology after TBI.
With its unprecedented sensitivity and spatial resolution, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has opened a new window for time-domain discoveries in the infrared. Here we report observations in ...the only field that has received four epochs (spanning 126 days) of JWST NIRCam observations in Cycle 1. This field is towards MACS J0416.1-2403, which is a rich galaxy cluster at redshift z=0.4 and is one of the Hubble Frontier Fields. We have discovered 14 transients from these data. Twelve of these transients happened in three galaxies (with z=0.94, 1.01, and 2.091) crossing a lensing caustic of the cluster, and these transients are highly magnified by gravitational lensing. These 12 transients are likely of similar nature to those previously reported based on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data in this field, i.e., individual stars in the highly magnified arcs. However, these twelve could not have been found by HST because they are too red and too faint. The other two transients are associated with background galaxies (z=2.205 and 0.7093) that are only moderately magnified, and they are likely supernovae. They indicate a de-magnified supernova surface density, when monitored at a time cadence of a few months to a ~3--4 micron survey limit of AB ~ 28.5 mag, of ~0.5 per sq. arcmin integrated to z ~ 2. This survey depth is beyond the capability of HST but can be easily reached by JWST.
Head-to-head optical coherence tomography (OCT) data comparing metallic stents with bioresorbable vascular scaffolds (BVS) are lacking. This study assessed vascular healing at 9-month follow-up after ...implantation of everolimus- and biolimus-eluting stents (EES; BES) and everolimus-eluting BVS.
OCT was performed in 74 patients enrolled in the EVERBIO II (NCT01711931) trial (23 with EES: 26 lesions, 7 625 struts; 23 with BES: 26 lesions, 6 140 struts; 28 with BVS: 33 lesions, 10 891 struts). OCT images were acquired using the pullback and nonocclusive flushing technique and analysed offline.
BVS demonstrated fewer uncovered struts per patient (12 ± 27 3.8 ± 8.4% vs 59 ± 55 21.8 ± 13.7% in the EES&BES group, p <0.001), and thicker neointimal hyperplasia (BVS 102 ± 44 µm vs EES&BES 66 ± 36 µm, p <0.01). There was no significant difference with regard to malapposed struts (2.1 ± 2.7% in the BVS vs 4.4 ± 8.8% in the EES&BES group, p = 0.41). In a predefined signal intensity scale, quantitative analysis of the "key component" (black) revealed lower intensity in BVS than EES&BES (14 ± 23% vs 13 ± 12%, p = 0.007). Intensity was lower in polylactide-containing stents (BVS&BES) than in EES (15 ± 19% vs 10 ± 10%, p <0.001).
BVS has fewer uncovered struts and presents with a thicker neointimal coverage compared with EES&BES. It is not known whether this improved capping correlates with superior vascular healing. Polylactide-containing stents (BVS and BES) demonstrate lower peristrut intensity compared with EES.
Using the first epoch of four-band NIRCam observations obtained by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Prime Extragalactic Areas for Reionization and Lensing Science Program in the Spitzer IRAC ...Dark Field, we search for F150W and F200W dropouts. In 14.2 arcmin^2, we have found eight F150W dropouts and eight F200W dropouts, all brighter than 27.5 mag (the brightest being ~24 mag) in the band to the red side of the break. As they are detected in multiple bands, these must be real objects. Their nature, however, is unclear, and characterizing their properties is important for realizing the full potential of JWST. If the observed color decrements are due to the Lyman break, these objects should be at z >~ 11.7 and z >~ 15.4, respectively. The color diagnostics show that at least four F150W dropouts are far away from the usual contaminators encountered in dropout searches (red galaxies at much lower redshifts or brown dwarf stars). While the diagnostics of the F200W dropouts are less certain due to the limited number of passbands, at least one of them is likely not a known type of contaminant, and the rest are consistent with either high-redshift galaxies with evolved stellar populations or old galaxies at z ~ 3 to 8. If a significant fraction of our dropouts are indeed at z ~ 12, we have to face the severe problem of explaining their high luminosities and number densities. Spectroscopic identifications of such objects are urgently needed.
Combustion reactivities of five wood chars were measured at 300−900 °C to produce suitable kinetic data to mass balance equations of a fluidized-bed combustion model. Two different techniques were ...used: char burnout time measurements in a fluidized-bed reactor and low-temperature char reactivity measurements in a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). A combined method is proposed here to avoid the limitations of both experimental techniques, especially for very reactive chars. In this method, the intrinsic activation energy for each char was determined in TGA at low combustion temperatures and the pre-exponential factor was obtained by fitting the experimental values of burnout times. Good agreement between experimental and calculated results was achieved.
Despite significant investment in software infrastructure, machine learning systems, runtimes and compilers do not compose properly. We propose a new design aiming at providing unprecedented degrees ...of modularity, composability and genericity. This paper discusses a structured approach to the construction of domain-specific code generators for tensor compilers, with the stated goal of improving the productivity of both compiler engineers and end-users. The approach leverages the natural structure of tensor algebra. It has been the main driver for the design of progressive lowering paths in \MLIR. The proposed abstractions and transformations span data structures and control flow with both functional (SSA form) and imperative (side-effecting) semantics. We discuss the implications of this infrastructure on compiler construction and present preliminary experimental results.
