Respiration signals are a vital sign of life. Monitoring human breath provides critical information for health assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for respiratory diseases such as asthma, chronic ...bronchitis, and emphysema. Stretchable and wearable respiration sensors have recently attracted considerable interest toward monitoring physiological signals in the era of real time and portable healthcare systems. This review provides a snapshot on the recent development of stretchable sensors and wearable technologies for respiration monitoring. The article offers the fundamental guideline on the sensing mechanisms and design concepts of stretchable sensors for detecting vital breath signals such as temperature, humidity, airflow, stress and strain. A highlight on the recent progress in the integration of variable sensing components outlines feasible pathways towards multifunctional and multimodal sensor platforms. Structural designs of nanomaterials and platforms for stretchable respiration sensors are reviewed.

Microelectromechanical systems sensors have been intensively developed utilizing various physical concepts, such as piezoresistive, piezoelectric, and thermoresistive effects. Among these sensing ...concepts, the thermoresistive effect is of interest for a wide range of thermal sensors and devices, thanks to its simplicity in implementation and high sensitivity. The effect of temperature on the electrical resistance of some metals and semiconductors has been thoroughly investigated, leading to the significant growth and successful demonstration of thermal-based sensors, such as temperature sensors, convective accelerometers and gyroscopes, and thermal flow sensors. In this paper, we review the fundamentals of the thermoresistive effect in metals and semiconductors. We also discuss the influence of design and fabrication parameters on the thermoresistive sensitivity. This paper includes several desirable features of thermoresistive sensors and recent developments in these sensors are summarized. This review provides insights into how it is affected by various parameters, and useful guidance for industrial designers in terms of high sensitivity and linearity and fast response.

E-skin with physical sensing capability has attracted considerable interest towards practical applications in soft robotics, human–machine interfaces, and wearable health monitoring. However, the development of a multimodal sensing platform with multiple layers for e-skin sensing of temperature and pressure has faced challenges due to the typical use of bare or single sensing layers as well as the complication of integration of multifunctional sensing modules onto curved surfaces. Herein, we demonstrate a new platform technology with multiple sandwiched layers of highly oriented carbon nanotube (CNT) films and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) for integration of pressure and temperature sensory functionalities into a single platform that is thin, ultra-lightweight, flexible, and wearable. The key technology of in-situ deposition of sensor platform on objects or in robot interface makes this a unique method for the development of e-skins for robotic applications, offering a new approach to wearable electronics and portable health care.
Single-crystalline silicon carbide (3C-SiC) on the Si substrate has drawn significant attention in recent years due to its low wafer cost and excellent mechanical, chemical, and optoelectronic ...properties. However, the applications of the structure have primarily been focused on piezoresistive and pressure sensors, bio-microelectromechanical system, and photonics. Herein, we report another promising application of the heterostructure as a laser spot position-sensitive detector (PSD) based on the lateral photovoltaic effect (LPE) under nonuniform optical illuminations at zero-bias conditions. The LPE shows a linear dependence on spot positions, and the sensitivity is found to be as high as 33 mV/mm under an illumination of 2.8 W/cm2 (635 nm). The structure also exhibits a linear dependence of the LPE over a large distance (7 mm) between two electrodes, which is crucial for PSDs as the region with a linear dependence of LPE is only usable for PSDs. The LPE at different spot positions and under different illumination conditions have been investigated and explained based on the energy-band analysis. The temperature dependence of the LPE and position sensitivity is also investigated. Furthermore, the two-dimensional mapping of the lateral photovoltages reveals the potential for utilizing the 3C-SiC/Si heterostructure to detect the laser spot position precisely on a plane.
This paper reviewed the Se in the environment (including total Se in soil, water, plants, and food), the daily Se intake and Se content in human hair were also examined to elucidate Se distribution ...in the environment and its effects on human health in China. Approximately 51% of China is Se deficiency in soil, compared with 72% in the survey conducted in 1989. Low Se concentrations in soil, water, plants, human diet and thus human hair were found in most areas of China. The only significant difference was observed between Se-rich and Se-excessive areas for Se contents in water, staple cereal, vegetables, fruits, and animal-based food, no remarkable contrast was found among other areas (p>0.05). This study also demonstrated that 39–61% of Chinese residents have lower daily Se intakes according to WHO/FAO recommended value (26–34μg/day). Further studies should focus on thoroughly understanding the concentration, speciation, and distribution of Se in the environment and food chain to successfully utilize Se resources, remediate Se deficiency, and assess the Se states and eco-effects on human health.

High-resolution Moho and lithosphere–asthenosphere boundary depth models for Vietnam and its surrounding areas are determined based on a recently released geoid model constructed from surface and ...satellite gravity data (GEOID_LSC_C model) and on 3ʹʹ resolution topography data (mixed SRTM model). A linear density gradient for the crust and a temperature-dependent density for the lithospheric mantle were used to determine the lithospheric structure under the assumption of local isostasy. In a first step, the impact of correcting elevation data from sedimentary basins to estimate Moho depth has been evaluated using CRUST1.0 model. Results obtained from a test area where seismic data are available, which demonstrated that the sedimentary effect should be considered before the inversion process. The geoid height and elevation-corrected sedimentary layer were filtered to remove signals originating below the lithosphere. The resulting Moho and lithosphere–asthenosphere boundary depth models computed at 1ʹ resolution were evaluated against seismic data as well as global and local lithospheric models available in the study region. These comparisons indicate a consistency of our Moho depth estimation with the seismic data within 1.5 km in standard deviation for the whole Vietnam. This new Moho depth model for the study region represents a significant improvement over the global models CRUST1.0 and GEMMA, which have standard deviations of 3.2 and 3.3 km, respectively, when compared to the seismic data. Even if a detailed geological interpretation of the results is out of scope of this paper, a joint analysis of the obtained models with the high-resolution Bouguer gravity anomaly is finally discussed in terms of the main geological patterns of the study region. The high resolution of our Moho and lithosphere–asthenosphere boundary depth models contribute to better constrain the lithospheric structure as well as tectonic and geodynamic processes of this region. The differences in Moho depth visible in the northeast and southwest sides of the Red River Fault Zone confirmed that the Red River Fault Zone may be considered the boundary between two continental blocks: South China and Indochina blocks. However, no remarkable differences in lithosphere–asthenosphere boundary depth were obtained from our results. This suggests that the Red River Fault Zone developed within the crust and remained a crustal fault.
Implantable electronics are of great interest owing to their capability for real-time and continuous recording of cellular–electrical activity. Nevertheless, as such systems involve direct interfaces ...with surrounding biofluidic environments, maintaining their long-term sustainable operation, without leakage currents or corrosion, is a daunting challenge. Herein, we present a thin, flexible semiconducting material system that offers attractive attributes in this context. The material consists of crystalline cubic silicon carbide nanomembranes grown on silicon wafers, released and then physically transferred to a final device substrate (e.g., polyimide). The experimental results demonstrate that SiC nanomembranes with thicknesses of 230 nm do not experience the hydrolysis process (i.e., the etching rate is 0 nm/day at 96 °C in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS)). There is no observable water permeability for at least 60 days in PBS at 96 °C and non-Na+ ion diffusion detected at a thickness of 50 nm after being soaked in 1× PBS for 12 days. These properties enable Faradaic interfaces between active electronics and biological tissues, as well as multimodal sensing of temperature, strain, and other properties without the need for additional encapsulating layers. These findings create important opportunities for use of flexible, wide band gap materials as essential components of long-lived neurological and cardiac electrophysiological device interfaces.
SUMMARY
In the realisation of the International Height Reference System, the determination of the geopotential value and its variations in time plays an important role. In this study, the geodetic ...boundary value problem approach is applied for direct determination of the gravity potential value using a GOCE global gravity field model enhanced with terrestrial gravity data. This determination is carried out on the Global Navigation Satellite System-Continuously Operating Reference Stations (GNSS-CORS) stations towards the realisation of the International Height Reference System in Vietnam. First, the effects of the GOCE global gravity field model omission error, the indirect bias term on the disturbing potential and the systematic cumulative errors in levelling data are estimated. These errors affect the estimated geopotential value. The results calculated on the GNSS/levelling points show that the effect of the GOCE DIR-R5 (up to degree/order 260) omission error on the offset potential value is quite significant. This effect was eliminated using high-resolution terrestrial gravity data using the remove-compute-restore technique. The indirect bias term on the disturbing potential can be safely neglected by using a GOCE global gravity field model for degrees higher than 60 for this study region. The systematic cumulative errors in levelling data can be modelled and removed using a third-order polynomial model. Then, the mean zero-height gravity potential of the Vietnam local vertical datum is estimated equal to ${\rm{W}}_0^{{\rm{LVD}}}$ = 62 636 846.69 m2 s–2 with standard deviation of 0.70 m2 s–2 based on the proposed approach. Finally, the geodetic boundary value problem approach was used to determine the geopotential on the surface of three GNSS-CORS stations in Vietnam. Based on time-series of the vertical component derived from the GNSS observations as well as InSAR data, temporal variations in geopotential are also estimated on these permanent GNSS stations. The purpose is to monitor deformation of the vertical datum. The results indicate that the geopotential value needs to be monitored and determined with the time-dependent component on the three Vietnamese permanent GNSS stations for a vertical datum. These stations may contribute to increase the density of reference points in the International Terrestrial Reference Frame, which is being researched and implemented by the International Association of Geodesy.
