We observe a signal for the doubly charmed baryon Xi(+)(cc) in the charged decay mode Xi(+)(cc)-->Lambda(+)(c)K-pi(+) in data from SELEX, the charm hadroproduction experiment at Fermilab. We observe ...an excess of 15.9 events over an expected background of 6.1+/-0.5 events, a statistical significance of 6.3sigma. The observed mass of this state is 3519+/-1 MeV/c(2). The Gaussian mass width of this state is 3 MeV/c(2), consistent with resolution; its lifetime is less than 33 fs at 90% confidence.
A regular monodisperse flow of spherical microtargets of solid hydrogen or deuterium with a variable diameter of several tens of micrometers and a frequency from several tens to several hundreds of ...kilohertz is in demand as internal targets in physical experiments at accelerators. The paper is devoted to the modification and launching of a prototype cryogenic corpuscular hydrogen target in which the gas entering the facility is transformed into a flow of spherical microtargets. Processes of cryogenic cooling and liquefaction of the gas, formation of a liquid microjet, and its controlled monodisperse disintegration into equal-sized drops are realized in the target, and they are followed by freezing of the drops and formation of microtargets upon injection into vacuum. The target prototype is composed of the cryogenic, vacuum, and gas systems as well as the systems for control and optical diagnostics of microtarget parameters. The modified target prototype provided monodisperse regimes of generation of microtargets with a diameter of 20–50 μm at a generation frequency of 260–465 kHz.
In the PANDA experiment of the FAIR project, it is proposed to use internal targets based on the hydrogen isotopes that provide a monodisperse regime of flow generation of solid spherical pellets ...with the diameter from 15–40 µm with the frequency from several tens of to several hundred kilohertz. The process for generating the pellets in such facilities includes the cooling, liquefying, and disintegration into drops of the liquid hydrogen jet directed vertically downwards; freezing of the jet when expiring with acceleration into vacuum; and its transport through the vacuum path into the region of interaction with the antiproton beam. For the effective control of the systems of the setup and for the adjustment of generation of pellets, an automatization and control system is developed combining the devices for measurement and control of pellet parameters (temperature, pressure, hydrogen flow, and piezoelectric generator frequency) and the optical diagnostics in a unified computational network. For data exchange between the devices, the TCP/IP Sockets and Modbus TCP protocols are used.
A procedure for spark-discharge purification of a liquid xenon sample with a mass of 55 kg is described. The average lifetime of ionization electrons before capture by electronegative impurities in ...liquid xenon increased from ≤ 0.1 μs to ≥ 50 μs for an electric field of 50–500 V/cm as a result of the procedure. The xenon purified with this method is intended for use in the RED-100 detector for observation of the process of coherent elastic neutrino scattering off xenon nuclei.
The explicit breaking of the axial symmetry by quantum fluctuations gives rise to the so-called axial anomaly. This phenomenon is solely responsible for the decay of the neutral pion π
into two ...photons (γγ), leading to its unusually short lifetime. We precisely measured the decay width Γ of the Formula: see text process. The differential cross sections for π
photoproduction at forward angles were measured on two targets, carbon-12 and silicon-28, yielding Formula: see text, where stat. denotes the statistical uncertainty and syst. the systematic uncertainty. We combined the results of this and an earlier experiment to generate a weighted average of Formula: see text Our final result has a total uncertainty of 1.50% and confirms the prediction based on the chiral anomaly in quantum chromodynamics.

The RED-100 experimental setup, which is designed to detect elastic coherent neutrino scattering off xenon nuclei, is described. One specific feature of this setup is the possibility of using it in ...above ground experiments. The setup is based on the RED-100 two-phase emission detector in which liquid xenon is used as a working medium for detection of rare events. The results of the technical run with the setup are presented. These are the evidence of the normal operation of all systems and the readiness of the setup for carrying out an experiment.
Many extensions of the standard model of particle physics suggest that neutrinos should be Majorana-type fermions-that is, that neutrinos are their own anti-particles-but this assumption is difficult ...to confirm. Observation of neutrinoless double-β decay (0νββ), a spontaneous transition that may occur in several candidate nuclei, would verify the Majorana nature of the neutrino and constrain the absolute scale of the neutrino mass spectrum. Recent searches carried out with (76)Ge (the GERDA experiment) and (136)Xe (the KamLAND-Zen and EXO (Enriched Xenon Observatory)-200 experiments) have established the lifetime of this decay to be longer than 10(25) years, corresponding to a limit on the neutrino mass of 0.2-0.4 electronvolts. Here we report new results from EXO-200 based on a large (136)Xe exposure that represents an almost fourfold increase from our earlier published data sets. We have improved the detector resolution and revised the data analysis. The half-life sensitivity we obtain is 1.9 × 10(25) years, an improvement by a factor of 2.7 on previous EXO-200 results. We find no statistically significant evidence for 0νββ decay and set a half-life limit of 1.1 × 10(25) years at the 90 per cent confidence level. The high sensitivity holds promise for further running of the EXO-200 detector and future 0νββ decay searches with an improved Xe-based experiment, nEXO.

We propose to detect and to study neutrino neutral current coherent scattering off atomic nuclei with a two-phase emission detector using liquid xenon as a working medium. Expected signals and ...backgrounds are calculated for two possible experimental sites: the Kalinin Nuclear Power Plant in the Russian Federation and the Spallation Neutron Source at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the U.S.A. Both sites have advantages as well as limitations. The experiment looks feasible at either location.
