Microautoradiography has been largely used to characterize the proliferative activity of colorectal mucosa. We used this technique in a large series of patients with polyps or cancer of the large ...bowel and in normal controls with the following objectives: (a) to define the normal pattern of cell replication in different tracts of the large bowel; (b) to compare the proliferative activity of colonic crypts in patients with colorectal cancer or polyps with that of controls; (c) to evaluate replicative activity of colorectal mucosa in the close vicinity and at distance from a neoplastic mass. Specimens of colorectal mucosa were taken during endoscopy (controls and polyps) or at surgery (cancer). During histological examination each intestinal hemicrypt was divided into five equal longitudinal compartments from the base to the surface and the labeled cells in each compartment were counted. In controls, total labeling index (ratio of labeled to total cells) and labeling index per crypt compartment showed only minor differences between the various large bowel tracts. Total labeling index tended to be higher in patients with polyps or cancer than in controls (13.5 +/- 0.4 and 12.5 +/- 0.4, respectively, versus 11.3 +/- 0.5). Labeling index per crypt compartment in the most superficial portions of the crypt (compartments 3 to 5) was significantly higher in the two groups of patients with tumors than in controls. This was particularly evident in the fifth compartment (the most superficial), in which labeled cells were observed in 15.8% (three subjects out of 19) of controls but in 71% (15 out of 21) and 87.5% (14 out of 16) of polyp and cancer patients, respectively. In patients with colorectal cancer there were not significant differences of cell proliferation between mucosal samples taken at various distances from the tumor margin; however, increased cell replication, especially in the most superficial portions of the crypt, has been observed. In conclusion, a significant upwards expansion of the proliferative zone of intestinal glands has been observed in patients with either polyps or cancer of the large bowel. In particular, labeling of the fifth compartment seems to possess the highest discriminatory power between subjects with or without intestinal neoplasms. Hyperproliferation of the entire colonic mucosa seems to be a common feature in patients with colorectal cancer.
We report the serendipitous discovery of a bright point source flare in the Abell cluster A1795 with archival EUVE and Chandra observations. Assuming the EUVE emission is associated with the Chandra ...source, the X-ray 0.5-7 kiloelectronvolt flux declined by a factor of approximately 2300 over a time span of 6 years, following a power-law decay with index approximately equal to 2.44 plus or minus 0.40. The Chandra data alone vary by a factor of approximately 20. The spectrum is well fit by a blackbody with a constant temperature of kiloteslas approximately equal to 0.09 kiloelectronvolts (approximately equal to 10 (sup 6) Kelvin). The flare is spatially coincident with the nuclear region of a faint, inactive galaxy with a photometric redshift consistent at the 1 sigma level with the cluster (redshift = 0.062476).We argue that these properties are indicative of a tidal disruption of a star by a black hole (BH) with log(M (sub BH) / M (sub 1 solar mass)) approximately equal to 5.5 plus or minus 0.5. If so, such a discovery indicates that tidal disruption flares may be used to probe BHs in the intermediate mass range, which are very difficult to study by other means.
Hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies (HNPP) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by recurrent mononeuropathies. A 1.5-Mb deletion in chromosome 17p11.2-p12 has been ...associated with HNPP. Duplication of the same 1.5-Mb region is known to be associated with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1 (CMT1A), a more severe peripheral neuropathy characterized by symmetrically slowed nerve conduction velocity (NCV). The CMT1A duplication and HNPP deletion appear to be the reciprocal products of a recombination event involving a repeat element (CMT1A-REP) that flanks the 1.5-Mb region involved in the duplication/deletion. Patients from nine unrelated Italian families who were diagnosed with HNPP on the basis of clinical, electrophysiological, and histological evaluations were analyzed by molecular methods for DNA deletion on chromosome 17p. In all nine families, Southern analysis using a CMT1A-REP probe detected a reduced hybridization signal of a 6.0-kb EcoRI fragment mapping within the distal CMT1A-REP, indicating deletion of one copy of CMT1A-REP in these HNPP patients. Families were also typed with a polymorphic (CA)n repeat and with RFLPs corresponding to loci D17S122, D17S125, and D17S61, which all map within the deleted region. Lack of allelic transmission from affected parent to affected offspring was observed in four informative families, providing an independent indication for deletion. Furthermore, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis analysis of SacII-digested genomic DNA detected junction fragments specific to the 1.5-Mb HNPP deletion in seven of nine Italian families included in this study. These findings suggest that a 1.5-Mb deletion on 17p11.2-p12 is the most common mutation associated with HNPP.

Recently, a new temporal dataset has been made public: it is made of a series of twelve 100 M pages snapshots of the .uk domain. The Web graphs of the twelve snapshots have been merged into a single ...time-aware graph that provide constant-time access to temporal information. In this paper we present the first statistical analysis performed on this graph, with the goal of checking whether the information contained in the graph is reliable (i.e. whether it depends essentially on appearance and disappearance of pages and links, or on the crawler behaviour). We perform a number of tests that show that the graph is actually reliable, and provide the first public data on the evolution of the Web that use a large scale and a significant diversity in the sites considered.
The mechanism of long-range electron transfer between the primary and the secondary quinone of photosynthetic reaction centers has been investigated, with particular attention on the role of the ...iron–histidine bridge. Computations suggest that in such a system, where the molecular subunits are packed together by H-bonds, a mobile electron, injected on one end of the chain, can be carried to the other end by switching the positions of the H-bonded hydrogens. Energy estimates would suggest that the proposed mechanism is plausible and worthy of further experimental investigations.
