Background
Oriental hornets are large predatory hymenoptera that occur in the southern part of Asia and the southeastern Mediterranean. Among many pests of bee colonies, Vespa orientalis was recorded ...to be one of the most destructive.
Objectives
The aim of this study was to: (1) monitor the presence of pathogens carried by V. orientalis that could potentially threaten honey bees and public health; (2) describe the hornet's predatory behavior on honey bee colonies and (3) collect the medical history of a V. orientalis sting suffered by a 36‐year‐old woman.
Methods
Observations of V. orientalis predatory behavior and the catches of hornets for parasitological and microbiological examination, using molecular and bacteriological analyses, were carried out in three experimental apiaries, both in spring in order to capture the foundress queens and during the summer to capture the workers. Furthermore, the medical history and photographic documentation of a V. orientalis sting suffered by a 36‐year‐old woman have been collected.
Results
The results obtained highlight that V. orientalis is capable of causing serious damage to beekeeping by killing bees, putting under stress the honey bee colonies and by potentially spreading honey bee pathogens among apiaries. These hornets may also become a public health concern, since they are capable of inflicting multiple, painful stings on humans.
Conclusions
Only the development of an Integrated Management Control Program will be able to contain the negative effects of anomalous population growth and the potentially negative impact on honey bees and public health of V. orientalis.

The INCAPS COVID Oceania study aimed to assess the impact caused by the COVID-19 pandemic on cardiac procedure volume provided in the Oceania region.
A retrospective survey was performed comparing ...procedure volumes within March 2019 (pre-COVID-19) with April 2020 (during first wave of COVID-19 pandemic). Sixty-three (63) health care facilities within Oceania that perform cardiac diagnostic procedures were surveyed, including a mixture of metropolitan and regional, hospital and outpatient, public and private sites, and 846 facilities outside of Oceania. The percentage change in procedure volume was measured between March 2019 and April 2020, compared by test type and by facility.
In Oceania, the total cardiac diagnostic procedure volume was reduced by 52.2% from March 2019 to April 2020, compared to a reduction of 75.9% seen in the rest of the world (p<0.001). Within Oceania sites, this reduction varied significantly between procedure types, but not between types of health care facility. All procedure types (other than stress cardiac magnetic resonance CMR and positron emission tomography PET) saw significant reductions in volume over this time period (p<0.001). In Oceania, transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) decreased by 51.6%, transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE) by 74.0%, and stress tests by 65% overall, which was more pronounced for stress electrocardiograph (ECG) (81.8%) and stress echocardiography (76.7%) compared to stress single-photon emission computerised tomography (SPECT) (44.3%). Invasive coronary angiography decreased by 36.7% in Oceania.
A significant reduction in cardiac diagnostic procedure volume was seen across all facility types in Oceania and was likely a function of recommendations from cardiac societies and directives from government to minimise spread of COVID-19 amongst patients and staff. Longer term evaluation is important to assess for negative patient outcomes which may relate to deferral of usual models of care within cardiology.
Consistency of results between different readers is an important issue in medical imaging, as it affects portability of results between institutions and may affect patient care. The International ...Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in pursuing its mission of fostering peaceful applications of nuclear technologies has supported several training activities in the field of nuclear cardiology (NC) and SPECT myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) in particular. The aim of this study was to verify the outcome of those activities through an international clinical audit on MPI where participants were requested to report on studies distributed from a core lab.
The study was run in two phases: in phase 1, SPECT MPI studies were distributed as raw data and full processing was requested as per local practice. In phase 2, images from studies pre-processed at the core lab were distributed. Data to be reported included summed stress score (SSS); summed rest score (SRS); summed difference score (SDS); left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction (EF) and end- diastolic volume (EDV). Qualitative appraisals included the assessment of perfusion and presence of ischemia, scar or mixed patterns, presence of transient ischemic dilation (TID), and risk for cardiac events (CE). Twenty-four previous trainees from low- and middle-income countries participated (core participants group) and their results were assessed for inter-observer variability in each of the two phases, and for changes between phases. The same evaluations were performed for a group of eleven international experts (experts group). Results were also compared between the groups.
Expert readers showed an excellent level of agreement for all parameters in both phase 1 and 2. For core participants, the concordance of all parameters in phase 1 was rated as good to excellent. Two parameters which were re-evaluated in phase 2, namely SSS and SRS, showed an increased level of concordance, up to excellent in both cases. Reporting of categorical variables by expert readers remained almost unchanged between the two phases, while core participants showed an increase in phase 2. Finally, pooled LVEF values did not show a significant difference between core participants and experts. However, significant differences were found between LVEF values obtained using different software packages for cardiac analysis.
In this study, inter-observer agreement was moderate-to-good for core group readers and good-to-excellent for expert readers. The quality of reporting is affected by the quality of processing. These results confirm the important role of the IAEA training activities in improving imaging in low- and middle-income countries.
The growth in nuclear medicine, in the past decade, is largely due to hybrid imaging, specifically single-photon emission tomography-computed tomography (SPECT-CT) and positron emission ...tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT). Introduction and use of hybrid imaging has been growing at a fast pace. This has led to many challenges and opportunities to the personnel dealing with it. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) keeps a close watch on the trends in applications of nuclear techniques in health by many ways, including obtaining inputs from member states and professional societies. In 2012, a Technical Meeting on trends in hybrid imaging was organized by IAEA to understand the current status and trends of hybrid imaging using nuclear techniques, its role in clinical practice, and associated educational needs and challenges. Perspective of scientific societies and professionals from all the regions of the world was obtained. Heterogeneity in value, educational needs, and access was noted and the drivers of this heterogeneity were discussed. This article presents the key points shared during the technical meeting, focusing primarily on SPECT-CT and PET-CT, and shares the action plan for IAEA to deal with heterogeneity as suggested by the participants.
The predominant cause of death in diabetes mellitus (DM) is coronary artery disease (CAD). Little is known about prevalence of silent ischemia in developing nations. We compared prevalence of silent ...ischemia in DM to a control group by exercise myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) and electrocardiogram (ECG) in developing nations. The prospective multinational Ischemia Assessment with Exercise imaging in Asymptomatic Diabetes study recruited participants at 12 sites in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. DM participants were age- and gender-matched 2:1 to non-DM individuals with ≥1 CAD risk factor. Subjects underwent exercise tests that were interpreted in core labs in blinded fashion. The study included 392 DM and 205 control participants. Among participants with diagnostic ECGs, a similar proportion of DM and controls had ischemic ECG (15% vs 12%, p = 0.5). A significantly higher proportion of DM group had MPI abnormalities compared with controls (26% vs 14%, p <0.001). In participants with ischemia on MPI, only 17% had ischemic ECG, whereas in those without ischemia on MPI, 10% had ischemic ECG. In a multivariable model, DM was independently associated with abnormal MPI (odds ratio 2.1, 95% confidence interval 1.3–3.5, p = 0.004). Women were less likely to have ischemia by MPI than men (10% vs 30%, p <0.001) and concordance between ECG and MPI was much worse in women. In conclusion, in this large prospective study, asymptomatic DM participants had (1) more ischemia by exercise MPI than ECG, (2) more ischemia by MPI but not ECG than control group, and (3) ischemia by MPI was less in women than men.
Background
Radiosynovectomy (RSO) is widely used in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Commercially available radiopharmaceuticals are costly, and therefore new agents may be of interest. Radiocolloids ...labelled with less costly and more accessible radionuclides are of interest to developing countries. We investigated the efficacy of different formulations in RA.
Methods
In a multicentre effort, a cohort of 99 RA patients with knee involvement underwent RSO. Sixty-eight patients were treated with 184 ± 4 MBq Y-90 silicate (Y-90), 15 patients with 53 ± 11 MBq P-32 colloid (P-32), and 16 patients with 451 ± 110 MBq of Re-188 tin colloid (Re-188). Corticosteroid group (CSG) consisting of 46 patients received an intra-articular instillation of 20–40 mg triamcinolone. Pain response was evaluated by a 10-step visual analogue scale (VAS) before, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 12 months following the procedure.
Results
In the RSO group (
n
= 99), pain relief by VAS from 6 ± 2 before to 5 ± 3, 4 ± 2, 3 ± 2 and 4 ± 2 at 1, 3, 6, 12 months after RSO was documented (Y-90 group: 6 ± 2 to 3 ± 2; P-32: 5 ± 2 to 3 ± 2, Re-188: 7 ± 2 to 4 ± 2 before vs. 6 months after therapy, respectively). The CSG VAS values were 6 ± 2 before and 5 ± 2, 4 ± 3, 5 ± 2 and 6 ± 2 at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after corticosteroid instillation, respectively. Pain relief achieved with the three radiocolloid formulations did not differ significantly (
P
> 0.1). Pain relief at 12 months was more durable in RSO compared to CSG,
P
< 0.05. At 3 months, pain relief (>2 steps) was reported by 86% of RSO versus 67% of CSG, at 6 months 72 versus 46% and at 12 months 46 versus 21%. Side effects, i.e. swelling or transient pain increase, were recorded in 16% of patients but resolved within 1 month.
Conclusion
Therapeutic efficacy of RSO for RA of the knee applying either P-32, Re-188 or Y-90 provides comparable results. Pain relief by RSO is longer lasting as compared to corticosteroid instillation.
The burden of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in the world is ever growing. They represent the first cause of death worldwide and in Latin America. Nuclear cardiology has a well-established role in ...the management of patient with CVDs and is being increasingly integrated into the healthcare systems in the region. However, there remains variability as to the infrastructure available across the countries, in terms of existing technology, radiopharmaceuticals, and human resources. The approximate number of gamma (γ) cameras in the region is 1348, with an average of 2.25 per million population; Argentina and Brazil having the largest number. Nearly 80% of the existing cameras are single-photon emission tomography (SPECT), of which 8% are hybrid SPECT-CT systems. Positron emission tomography technology is steadily increasing, and currently, there is an average of 0.25 scanners per million inhabitants, indicating that there is a potential to expand the capacities in order to cover the needs. Four countries have nuclear reactors for research purposes, which allow the production of technetium-99 m (Argentina, Chile, Mexico and Peru), while four (Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, and Mexico) assemble 99Mo-99mTc generators. As for the nuclear cardiology studies, about 80% of studies performed are gated SPECT myocardial perfusion imaging; less than 10% are multi-gated acquisition (mainly for evaluation of cardiac toxicity in cancer patients), and the other 10% correspond to other types of studies, such as viability detection, and adrenergic innervation studies with 123I-MIBG. Physical stress is preferred, when possible, based on the clinical condition of the patient. Regarding human resources, there is an average of 1.1 physicians and 1.3 technologists per γ camera, with 0.1 medical physicists and 0.1 radiopharmacists per center in the region. The future of nuclear cardiology in Latin America and the Caribbean is encouraging, with great potential and possibilities for growth. National, regional, and international cooperation including support from scientific societies and organizations such as International Atomic Energy Agency, American Society of Nuclear Cardiology, and Latin American Association of Biology and Nuclear Medicine Societies, as well as governmental commitment are key factors for the development of the specialty. A multimodality approach in cardiac imaging will contribute to a better management of patients with CVDs.
As a part of an international study on the molecular analysis of Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma (DLBCL), a robust protocol for gene expression analysis from RNA extraction to qRT-PCR using Formalin ...Fixed Paraffin Embedded tissues was developed. Here a study was conducted to define a strategy to validate the previously reported 6-gene (LMO2, BCL6, FN1, CCND2, SCYA3 and BCL2) model as predictor of prognosis in DLBCL. To avoid variation, all samples were tested in a single centre and single platform. This study comprised 8 countries (Brazil, Chile, Hungary, India, Philippines, S. Korea, Thailand and Turkey). Using the Kaplan-Meier and log rank test on patients (n=162) and two mortality risk groups (with those above and below the mean representing high and low risk groups) confirmed that the 6-gene predictor score correlates significantly with overall survival (OS, p<0.01) but not with event free survival (EFS, p=0.18). Adding the International Prognostic Index (IPI) shows that the 6-gene predictor score correlates significantly with high IPI scores for OS (p<0.05), whereas those with low IPI scores show a trend not reaching significance (p=0.08). This study defined an effective and economical qRT-PCR strategy and validated the 6-gene score as a predictor of OS in an international setting.
Rifaximin is an unabsorbed oral antibiotic showing anti‐inflammatory properties in human pathologies like irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease. In veterinary medicine, rifaximin is ...primarily used in the treatment of dermatological diseases in all animal species, in therapy and prophylaxis of mastitis in cows and in the treatment of endometritis in cattle and horses. The aim of this preliminary study was to evaluate the anti‐inflammatory properties of rifaximin on primary cell cultures from bovine endometrium in which inflammatory response was induced by Lipopolysaccaride (LPS) treatment. Epithelial and stromal cells were isolated from bovine endometrium and separately incubated for 24 h with 1 μg mL−1 LPS after rifaximin (10, 50 and 100 μmol L−1) or dexamethasone (10 μmol L−1) pre‐treatment for 24 h. Supernatants were collected 24 h after LPS treatment and interleukin (IL)‐6 and IL‐8 accumulation was measured by ELISA. Rifaximin (10, 50 and 100 μmol L−1) dose dependently inhibited the LPS‐induced increase in IL‐6 and IL‐8 in stromal cells, whereas in epithelial cells it was not possible to detect any accumulation of these interleukins. Rifaximin reduced IL‐6 and IL‐8 production, showing a potential anti‐inflammatory effect that opens up to new possibilities for the use of this drug in uterine inflammatory diseases.
Rifaximin is an unabsorbed oral antibiotic that had shown also anti‐inflammatory properties in human pathologies. It is used in veterinary medicine as antibacterial in mastitis and endometritis in cattle but its antiflogistic activity in cows remains unknown. In this work, we report rifaximin ability to reverse LPS‐induced IL‐6 and IL‐8 production in bovine stromal endometrium cells. The present findings provide the first evidence of a potential anti‐inflammatory activity of rifaximin in cow endometritis.
