The GERmanium Detector Array (GERDA) experiment searched for the lepton-number-violating neutrinoless double-β (0νββ) decay of ^{76}Ge, whose discovery would have far-reaching implications in ...cosmology and particle physics. By operating bare germanium diodes, enriched in ^{76}Ge, in an active liquid argon shield, GERDA achieved an unprecedently low background index of 5.2×10^{-4} counts/(keV kg yr) in the signal region and met the design goal to collect an exposure of 100 kg yr in a background-free regime. When combined with the result of Phase I, no signal is observed after 127.2 kg yr of total exposure. A limit on the half-life of 0νββ decay in ^{76}Ge is set at T_{1/2}>1.8×10^{26} yr at 90% C.L., which coincides with the sensitivity assuming no signal.
A new isoscalar state in the two-baryon system with mass 2380 MeV and width 80 MeV denoted now d*(2380) has been detected in the experiments at the Juelich Cooler Synchrotron (COSY). Existence or ...influence of states with higher isospin is a subject of the experiment for studing of the π+π− production in pp collisions. Calculations taking into account isotensor dibaryon resonance in the ΔN with I(Jp) = 2(1+) provide a good description of the pp → ppπ+π− total and differential cross sections.
A discovery that neutrinos are Majorana fermions would have profound implications for particle physics and cosmology. The Majorana character of neutrinos would make possible the neutrinoless double-β ...(0νββ) decay, a matter-creating process without the balancing emission of antimatter. The GERDA Collaboration searches for the 0νββ decay of
Ge by operating bare germanium detectors in an active liquid argon shield. With a total exposure of 82.4 kg⋅year, we observe no signal and derive a lower half-life limit of
> 0.9 × 10
years (90% C.L.). Our
sensitivity, assuming no signal, is 1.1 × 10
years. Combining the latter with those from other 0νββ decay searches yields a sensitivity to the effective Majorana neutrino mass of 0.07 to 0.16 electron volts.
We report on an exclusive and kinematically complete high-statistics measurement of the basic double-pionic fusion reaction pn→dπ(0)π(0) over the full energy region of the ABC effect, a pronounced ...low-mass enhancement in the ππ-invariant mass spectrum. The measurements, which cover also the transition region to the conventional t-channel ΔΔ process, were performed with the upgraded WASA detector setup at COSY. The data reveal the Abashian-Booth-Crowe effect to be uniquely correlated with a Lorentzian energy dependence in the integral cross section. The observables are consistent with a narrow resonance with m=2.37 GeV, Γ≈70 MeV and I(J(P))=0(3(+)) in both pn and ΔΔ systems. Necessary further tests of the resonance interpretation are discussed.
The ability to detect liquid argon scintillation light from within a densely packed high-purity germanium detector array allowed the
Gerda
experiment to reach an exceptionally low background rate in ...the search for neutrinoless double beta decay of
76
Ge. Proper modeling of the light propagation throughout the experimental setup, from any origin in the liquid argon volume to its eventual detection by the novel light read-out system, provides insight into the rejection capability and is a necessary ingredient to obtain robust background predictions. In this paper, we present a model of the
Gerda
liquid argon veto, as obtained by Monte Carlo simulations and constrained by calibration data, and highlight its application for background decomposition.

collaboration is performing a sensitive search for neutrinoless double beta decay of
76
Ge
at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy. The upgrade of the
Gerda
experiment from ...Phase I to Phase II has been concluded in December 2015. The first Phase II data release shows that the goal to suppress the background by one order of magnitude compared to Phase I has been achieved.
Gerda
is thus the first experiment that will remain “background-free” up to its design exposure (
100 kg
year
). It will reach thereby a half-life sensitivity of more than
10
26
year within 3 years of data collection. This paper describes in detail the modifications and improvements of the experimental setup for Phase II and discusses the performance of individual detector components.

Exclusive and kinematically complete high-statistics measurements of quasifree polarized np scattering have been performed in the energy region of the narrow resonancelike structure d* with I(JP) = ...0(3 super(+)), M approximately 2380 MeV, and Gamma approximately 70 MeV observed recently in the double-pionic fusion channels pn arrow right dpi super(0)pi super(0) and pn arrow right dpi super(+)pi super(-). The experiment was carried out with the WASA detector setup at COSY having a polarized deuteron beam impinged on the hydrogen pellet target and utilizing the quasifree process dp arrow right np + p sub(spectator). This allowed the np analyzing power, A sub(y) to be measured over a broad angular range. The obtained A sub(y)angular distributions deviate systematically from the current SAID SP07 NN partial-wave solution. Incorporating the new A sub(y)data into the SAID analysis produces a pole in the super(3)D sub(3) - super(3)G sub(3) waves in support of the d* resonance hypothesis.
Exclusive and kinematically complete high-statistics measurements of the basic double-pionic fusion reactions pn→dπ0π0, pn→dπ+π− and pp→dπ+π0 have been carried out simultaneously over the energy ...region of the ABC effect using the WASA detector setup at COSY. Whereas the isoscalar reaction part given by the dπ0π0 channel exhibits the ABC effect, i.e. a low-mass enhancement in the ππ-invariant mass distribution, as well as the associated resonance structure in the total cross section, the isovector part given by the dπ+π0 channel shows a smooth behavior consistent with the conventional t-channel ΔΔ process. The dπ+π− data are very well reproduced by combining the data for isovector and isoscalar contributions, if the kinematical consequences of the isospin violation due to different masses for charged and neutral pions are taken into account.

Gerda
has been conceived in two phases. Phase II, which started in December 2015, features several novelties including 30 new
76
Ge enriched detectors. These were manufactured according to the Broad Energy Germanium (BEGe) detector design that has a better background discrimination capability and energy resolution compared to formerly widely-used types. Prior to their installation, the new BEGe detectors were mounted in vacuum cryostats and characterized in detail in the
Hades
underground laboratory in Belgium. This paper describes the properties and the overall performance of these detectors during operation in vacuum. The characterization campaign provided not only direct input for
Gerda
Phase II data collection and analyses, but also allowed to study detector phenomena, detector correlations as well as to test the accuracy of pulse shape simulation codes.
