A search for stable and long-lived heavy charged particles was performed using the data taken by the DELPHI experiment at an energy of 189 GeV. The Cherenkov light detected in the Ring Imaging ...Cherenkov Detector and the ionisation loss measured in the Time Projection Chamber were used to identify heavy particles passing through the detector. No evidence for the production of such particles has been found, therefore exclusion limits at 95% confidence level were derived on the masses of left and right handed smuons and staus. The results were combined with previous DELPHI searches in this channel. Including previous DELPHI results, masses of left (right) handed stable smuons and staus can be excluded between 2 GeV/c
2 and 88 (87.5) GeV/c
2 at 95% CL.

The Barrel Ring Imaging Cherenkov detector of the DELPHI experiment at LEP provides particle identification by the detection of the radiation emitted in UV transparent perfluorocarbons. We will ...present the principles of the operation of the detector together with a discussion of the automatized control of all the relevant physical parameters. The observed performances of the detector are very close to their design values.< >
Capping agents such as starch can be used to protect semiconductor nanoparticles from aggregation and obtain uniform structures. Cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoparticles with starch as a capping agent ...were prepared with an aqueous precipitation technique at different pH levels to study the optimum condition for producing a narrow distribution of nanoparticles. The morphology of the prepared nanoparticles was measured by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Grain sizes of the samples determined by X-ray Diffraction (XRD) with Scherer’s equation were relatively dependet on the pH applied in the synthesized process. Infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) indicated that the starch and the nanoparticles were bonded by R-N=C=S bonds, but bondinbg depended on the pH used. The band gap of the CdS nanoparticles measured by UV-Vis spectroscopy was 2.39 eV, which was lower than CdS in bulk phase because of distorted structures in obtained CdS nanoparticles.
DeSilva et al discuss role of evidence scans in the review of DRIs. The DRIs are a set of reference values used to plan and assess nutrient intakes of the apparently healthy populations of the US and ...Canada. DRI values, established for different age and sex groups, are based on various health outcomes that include nutrient adequacy, chronic disease, and toxicity. The DRIs serve as the scientific basis for federal food and nutrition programs, policies, and regulations, including food fortification, nutrition labeling, dietary guidelines, and standards for military feeding. The first DRI reports, which included 29 vitamins and minerals, macronutrients, energy, and fiber, were published between 1997 and 2005 by the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM).
ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS) is a general purpose experiment, which will start its operation at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in 2007. The ATLAS detector is designed to study the ...products of proton-proton collisions at c.m.s. energies of up to 14 TeV. Three Greek universities have taken the responsibility to construct 112 BIS-MDT (barrel inner small) chambers using 29000 drift tubes of /spl sim/1.7 m length that have been quality tested before assembly. This paper describes the quality assurance and quality control (QA/spl I.bar/QC) procedures for the monitored drift tubes (MDT), followed at the High Energy Physics Laboratory of the National Technical University of Athens. The quality parameters verification and the obtained results are presented.
