Cadmium (Cd) is a heavy metal that has received considerable concern environmentally and occupationally. Cd has a long biological half-life mainly due to its low rate of excretion from the body. ...Thus, prolonged exposure to Cd will cause toxic effect due to its accumulation over time in a variety of tissues, including kidneys, liver, central nervous system (CNS), and peripheral neuronal systems. Cd can be uptaken from the nasal mucosa or olfactory pathways into the peripheral and central neurons; for the latter, Cd can increase the blood brain barrier (BBB) permeability. However, mechanisms underlying Cd neurotoxicity remain not completely understood. Effect of Cd neurotransmitter, oxidative damage, interaction with other metals such as cobalt and zinc, estrogen-like, effect and epigenetic modification may all be the underlying mechanisms. Here, we review the in vitro and in vivo evidence of neurotoxic effects of Cd. The available finding indicates the neurotoxic effects of Cd that was associated with both biochemical changes of the cell and functional changes of central nervous system, suggesting that neurotoxic effects may play a role in the systemic toxic effects of the exposure to Cd, particularly the long-term exposure.
Sucrose is the main photosynthetic product in plants, and acts as a major energy substrate and signaling regulator of plant growth. Furthermore, sucrose is involved in the responses to various ...abiotic stresses. However, the role of sucrose in soybean (Glycine max L.) growth and development under drought stress remains largely unknown. In this study, the two soybean cultivars, Shennong8 (CV.SN8) and Shennong12 (CV.SN12), were grown in pot culture and subjected to three water treatments for 15 days: soil moisture contents of 75 ± 5% (CK), 45 ± 5% (MD), and 30 ± 5% (SD) of field capacity. Under drought stress, the reduction in shoot biomass was more pronounced than the reduction of biomass in the root of both soybean cultivars, resulting in higher root/shoot (R/S) ratio. Drought stress increased the contents of soluble sugar and sucrose in the leaves, but decreased starch content; in the roots, all of these parameters were increased. This may be related to the enhanced carbohydrate metabolism activity under drought stress, including notable changes in the activities of sugar metabolism enzymes and expression levels of GmSPS, GmSuSy, GmC-INV, GmA-INV, GmAMY3, and GmBAM1. Furthermore, the expression levels of sucrose transporter genes (GmSUC2, GmSWEET6, and GmSWEET15) in leaves and roots of soybean seedlings were up-regulated under drought stress. In conclusion, our results highlight that the increase in R/S ratio caused by the changes of sugar allocation, metabolism, and transport under drought stress contributes towards drought resistance of soybean.

Sucrose is the main photosynthesis product of plants and the fundamental carbon skeleton monomer and energy supply for seed formation and development. Drought stress induces decreased photosynthetic ...carbon assimilation capacity, and seriously affects seed weight in soybean. However, little is known about the relationship between decreases in soybean seed yield and disruption of sucrose metabolism and transport balance in leaves and seeds during the reproductive stages of crop growth. Three soybean cultivars with similar growth periods, "Shennong17", "Shennong8", and "Shennong12", were subjected to drought stress during reproductive growth for 45 days. Drought stress significantly reduced leaf photosynthetic rate, shoot biomass, and seed weight by 63.93, 33.53, and 41.65%, respectively. Drought stress decreased the contents of starch, fructose, and glucose in seeds during the late seed filling stages, while it induced sucrose accumulation, which resulted in a decreased hexose-to-sucrose ratio. In developing seeds, the activities of sucrose synthesis and degradation enzymes, the expression levels of genes related to metabolism, and the expression levels of sucrose transporter genes were enhanced during early seed development under drought stress; however, under prolonged drought stress, all of them decreased. These results demonstrated that drought stress enhances the capacity for unloading sucrose into seeds and activated sucrose metabolism during early seed development. At the middle and late seed filling stages, sucrose flow from leaves to seeds was diminished, and the balance of sucrose metabolism was impaired in seeds, resulting in seed mass reduction. The different regulation strategies in sucrose allocation, metabolism, and transport during different seed development stages may be one of the physiological mechanisms for soybean plants to resist drought stress.
This paper describes the energy conservation effect of energy storage materials used in buildings. Firstly, the microencapsulated energy storage materials are prepared and analyzed by the Bruker 550 ...Fourier transform infrared spectrometer manufactured by Bruker. The analysis results reveal that the energy conservation efficiency of energy storage materials can reach up to 27.56%. It is concluded the energy storage temperature of the microencapsulated energy storage material reaches 30°C. In relation to the MicroPCM building materials, the two have a peak temperature difference of up to 1.70°C, which suggests that this material has a high energy efficiency.
Calmodulin-like proteins (CML) are important calcium signal transduction proteins in plants. CML genes have been analyzed in several plants. However, little information on CML in Phaseolus vulgare is ...available. In this study, we identified 111 PvCMLs distributed on eleven chromosomes. Phylogenetic analysis classified them into seven subfamilies. Cis-acting element prediction showed that PvCML contained elements related to growth and development, response to abiotic stress and hormones. Moreover, the majority of PvCMLs showed different expression patterns in most of the nine tissues and developmental stages which indicated the role of PvCML in the growth and development of common bean. Additionally, the common bean was treated with melatonin by seed soaking, and root transcriptome at the 5th day and qRT-PCR of different tissue at several stages were performed to reveal the response of PvCML to the hormone. Interestingly, 9 PvCML genes of subfamily VI were detected responsive to exogenous melatonin, and the expression dynamics of nine melatonin response PvCML genes after seed soaking with melatonin were revealed. Finally, the protein interaction network analysis of nine melatonin responsive PvCMLs was constructed. The systematic analysis of the PvCML gene family provides theoretical support for the further elucidation of their functions, and melatonin response molecular mechanism of the CML family in P. vulgaris.
This study aims to determine variability among soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) cultivars under drought conditions and how nitrogen metabolites, metabolism-related enzymes, and gene expression vary ...during soybean growth. Three soybean cultivars, Shennong17 (CV.SN17), Shennong8 (CV.SN8), and Shennong12 (CV.SN12), were grown in pot culture and subjected to drought stress at reproductive stages for 45 days. The results showed that long-term drought stress decreased biomass allocation to reproductive organs, weakened antioxidant capacity, and reduced seed weight, effects that were less pronounced in CV.SN12 compared with those in CV.SN8 and CV.SN17. Drought stress decreased the concentrations of nitrogen and soluble protein but increased nitrate concentration in leaves. This was related to the significantly reduction of nitrogen metabolism efficiency, including decreased activities of nitrogen metabolism enzymes, and downregulated expression of GmNR, GmNiR, GmGS, and GmGOGAT. Drought stress increased the concentrations of free amino acid, proline, and soluble sugar in leaves to enhance the osmotic adjustment ability. Furthermore, soybean seed weight showed significantly correlation (p < 0.05) with nitrogen-metabolism-related parameters. Based on the performance of growth, nitrogen metabolism, and yield attributes, CV.SN12 showed the highest tolerance to drought, followed by CV.SN8 and CV.SN17. In addition, these nitrogen-metabolism-related parameters could be used in soybeans to select for drought tolerance.
Pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) is one of the most serious rice production constraints in areas where prolonged rainfall occurs during harvest. However, the molecular mechanisms of transcriptional ...regulation underlying PHS remain largely unknown.
In the current study, comparative transcriptome analyses were performed to characterize the similarities and differences between two rice varieties: PHS-sensitive Jiuxiangzhan (JXZ) and PHS-resistant Meixiangxinzhan (MXXZ). The physiological experimental results indicated that PHS causes a significant decrease in starch content and, in contrast, a significant increase in soluble sugar content and amylase activity. The extent of change in these physiological parameters in the sensitive variety JXZ was greater than that in the resistant variety MXXZ. A total of 9,602 DEGs were obtained from the transcriptome sequencing data, and 5,581 and 4,021 DEGs were identified in JXZ and MXXZ under high humidity conditions, respectively. The KEGG pathway enrichment analysis indicated that many DEGs under high humidity treatment were mainly linked to plant hormone signal transduction, carbon metabolism, starch and sucrose metabolism, and phenylpropanoid biosynthesis. Furthermore, the number of upregulated genes involved in these pathways was much higher in JXZ than in MXXZ, while the number of downregulated genes was higher in MXXZ than in JXZ. These results suggest that the physiological and biochemical processes of these pathways are more active in the PHS-sensitive JXZ than in the PHS-resistant MXXZ.
Based on these results, we inferred that PHS in rice results from altered phytohormone regulation, more active carbon metabolism and energy production, and enhanced phenylpropanoid biosynthesis. Our study provides a theoretical foundation for further elucidation of the complex regulatory mechanism of PHS in rice and the molecular breeding of PHS-resistant rice varieties.

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) is an essential crop with high economic value. The growth of this plant is sensitive to environmental stress. Heat shock factor (Hsf) is a family of antiretroviral ...transcription factors that regulate plant defense system against biotic and abiotic stress. To date, few studies have identified and bio-analyzed Hsfs in common bean.
In this study, 30 Hsf transcription factors (PvHsf1-30) were identified from the PFAM database. The PvHsf1-30 belonged to 14 subfamilies with similar motifs, gene structure and cis-acting elements. The Hsf members in Arabidopsis, rice (Oryza sativa), maize (Zea mays) and common bean were classified into 14 subfamilies. Collinearity analysis showed that PvHsfs played a role in the regulation of responses to abiotic stress. The expression of PvHsfs varied across different tissues. Moreover, quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) revealed that most PvHsfs were differentially expressed under cold, heat, salt and heavy metal stress, indicating that PvHsfs might play different functions depending on the type of abiotic stress.
In this study, we identified 30 Hsf transcription factors and determined their location, motifs, gene structure, cis-elements, collinearity and expression patterns. It was found that PvHsfs regulates responses to abiotic stress in common bean. Thus, this study provides a basis for further analysis of the function of PvHsfs in the regulation of abiotic stress in common bean.

Fresnel incoherent correlation holography (FINCH) shows great advantages of coherent-light-source-free, high lateral resolution, no scanning, and easy integration, and has exhibited great potential ...in recording three-dimensional information of objects. Despite the rapid advances in the resolution of the FINCH system, little attention has been paid to the influence of the effective aperture of the system. Here, the effective aperture of the point spread function (PSF) has been investigated both theoretically and experimentally. It is found that the effective aperture is mainly restricted by the aperture of the charge-coupled device (CCD), the pixel size of the CCD, and the actual aperture of the PSF at different recording distances. It is also found that the optimal spatial resolution exists only for a small range of recording distance, while this range would become smaller as the imaging wavelength gets longer, leading to the result that the optimal spatial resolution is solely determined by the actual aperture of the PSF. By further combining the FINCH system with a microscopy system and optimizing the recording distance, a spatial resolution as high as 0.78 μm at the wavelength of 633 nm has been obtained, enabling a much higher quality imaging of unstained living biological cells compared to the commercial optical microscope. The results of this work may provide some helpful insights into the design of high-resolution FINCH systems and pave the way for their application in biomedical imaging.
