Coatings with thicknesses between a few microns and ∼10 μm deposited on a Zircaloy-4 substrate have been studied with the objective to provide a significant reduction in the oxidation-induced ...embrittlement of the nuclear fuel cladding, especially in accidental conditions, such as LOss-of-Coolant-Accident (LOCA) conditions. This paper deals with the early studies carried out at CEA, several years before the Fukushima-Daiishi events, on different types of coatings obtained by a physical vapor deposition process. The studied coatings included ceramic, nitride and metallic multi-layered ones. The results of this screening analysis showed that the first generation of chromium-based coatings exhibited the most promising behavior: good compromise between oxidation resistance and adhesion to the metallic substrate, good fretting resistance and improved resistance to oxidation in steam at high temperature (Design Basis Accident LOCA conditions and slightly beyond).
•Coated zirconium-based alloys are studied as enhanced accident tolerant nuclear fuel claddings for light water reactors.•Several types of PVD coatings, including ceramic nitride and metallic multi-layered materials, are studied.•Chromium coatings are chosen and further developed.•Encouraging results, showing improved behavior both in normal operating and upon DBA-LOCA and slightly beyond conditions.
Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that is also prescribed off-label in premature neonates as a prokinetic agent. There is no oral formulation with dosage and/or excipients adapted for these ...high-risk patients.
Clinical studies of erythromycin as a prokinetic agent were reviewed. Capsules of 20 milligrams of erythromycin were compounded with microcrystalline cellulose. Erythromycin capsules were analyzed using the chromatographic method described in the United States Pharmacopoeia which was found to be stability-indicating. The stability of 20 mg erythromycin capsules stored protected from light at room temperature was studied for one year.
20 mg erythromycin capsules have a beyond use date not lower than one year.
20 milligrams erythromycin capsules can be compounded in batches of 300 unities in hospital pharmacy with a beyond-use-date of one year at ambient temperature protected from light.

All inorganic solid-state thin-film electrochromic devices based on lithium ion (Li+) insertion and using lithium phosphorus oxynitride (LiPON) as the ion conductor were fabricated by physical vapor ...deposition technology. Multilayer architecture consisting of TCO/V2O5/LiPON/LixWO3/TCO was deposited by RF sputtering technology on glass substrate. Electro-optical characterization carried out on complete devices highlighted transmittance changes as large as 40% at 600nm wavelength upon ±1.5V voltage application, with coloring and bleaching time of 30s. Several hundreds of bleaching/coloration cycles have been carried out with almost no performance degradation.
The effect of the multilayer architecture was investigated. The results showed interactions between the depositing and the deposited layers, which influences the total amount of injected charges and hence the device performance. In particular, it has been observed a reversibly inserted Li+ charge capacity during LiPON deposition and a charge capacity extraction during deposition in presence of lithiated layers. The described phenomena should be considered in order to achieve the charge balance between the electrodes for optimum device performance.
•LiPON is a highly suitable ion conductor for electrochromic applications.•A TCO/V2O5/LiPON/LixWO3/TCO monolithic device was fabricated.•A high stability of device properties (∆T=38% at 600 nm) was observed upon 500 cycles.•The multilayer architecture influences the amount of Li+ charges in the structure.
Hyperhomocysteinemia is associated with an increased risk of vascular disease, and recent results suggest that it also could increase the risk of dementia. We examined the relationship between ...homocysteine and cognitive decline in 1,241 subjects aged 61 to 73 years, followed up over 4 years. Plasma homocysteine levels were determined in all participants as well as cardiovascular risk factors, apolipoprotein E genotype, plasma levels of folate, and vitamin B12. Cognitive performances were assessed repeatedly by using Mini‐Mental State Examination, Trail Making Test, Digit Symbol Substitution Test, and Finger Tapping Test. At 2‐year follow‐up, 841 subjects underwent cerebral magnetic resonance imaging, and white matter hyperintensities were rated visually. Analyses were adjusted for all cardiovascular risk factors. Cross‐sectional analyses showed that higher concentrations of homocysteine were significantly related to poorer performances at all neuropsychological tests. Longitudinal analyses confirmed this finding. The odds of cognitive decline was 2.8‐fold (p < 0.05) higher in subjects with homocysteine levels above 15μmol/L compared with those with homocysteine levels below 10μmol/L. In participants who underwent magnetic resonance imaging, the relationship between homocysteine and cognition was unchanged after taking into account white matter hyperintensities suggesting that white matter hyperintensities do not mediate the association between homocysteine and cognition. The adrenal cortex undergoes remodeling during fetal and postnatal life. How zona reticularis emerges in the postnatal gland to support adrenarche, a process whereby higher primates increase ...prepubertal androgen secretion, is unknown. Using cell-fate mapping and gene deletion studies in mice, we show that activation of PKA has no effect on the fetal cortex, while it accelerates regeneration of the adult cortex, triggers zona fasciculata differentiation that is subsequently converted into a functional reticularis-like zone, and drives hypersecretion syndromes. Remarkably, PKA effects are influenced by sex. Indeed, testicular androgens increase WNT signaling that antagonizes PKA, leading to slower adrenocortical cell turnover and delayed phenotype whereas gonadectomy sensitizes males to hypercorticism and reticularis-like formation. Thus, reticularis results from ultimate centripetal conversion of adult cortex under the combined effects of PKA and cell turnover that dictate organ size. We show that PKA-induced progenitor recruitment is sexually dimorphic and may provide a paradigm for overrepresentation of women in adrenal diseases.
variants have been reported in a few cases of patients with hemiplegic migraine. To clarify the role of
in familial hemiplegic migraine, we studied this gene in a large cohort of affected probands.
...was analyzed in 860 probands with hemiplegic migraine, and
variations were identified in 30 probands. Genotyping of relatives identified a total of 49 persons with variations whose clinical manifestations were detailed.
variations were found in 12 of 163 probands who previously tested negative for
,
, and
variations and in 18 of 697 consecutive probands screened simultaneously on the 4 genes. In this second group, pathogenic variants were found in 105 individuals, mostly in
(42%), followed by
(26%),
17%), and
(15%). The
variations included 7 distinct variants, 5 of which have already been described in persons with paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia and 2 new variants. Eight probands had a deletion of the whole
gene. Among the 49 patients with variations in
, 26 had pure hemiplegic migraine and 16 had hemiplegic migraine associated with another manifestation: epilepsy (8), learning disabilities (5), hypersomnia (4), or abnormal movement (3). Three patients had epilepsy without migraine: 2 had paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia without migraine, and 1 was asymptomatic.
should be regarded as the fourth autosomal dominant gene for hemiplegic migraine and screened in any affected patient, together with the 3 other main genes. Further studies are needed to understand how the same loss-of-function
variations can lead to a wide range of neurologic phenotypes, including paroxysmal movement disorder, epilepsy, learning disabilities, sleep disorder, and hemiplegic migraine.
