Context. The current generation of ground-based Cherenkov telescopes, together with the LAT instrument on-board the Fermi satellite, have greatly increased our knowledge of γ-ray blazars. Among them, ...the high-frequency-peaked BL Lacertae object (HBL) PKS 1424+240 (z ≃ 0.6) is the farthest persistent emitter of very-high-energy (VHE; E ≥ 100 GeV) γ-ray photons. Current emission models can satisfactorily reproduce typical blazar emission assuming that the dominant emission process is synchrotron-self-Compton (SSC) in HBLs; and external-inverse-Compton (EIC) in low-frequency-peaked BL Lacertae objects and flat-spectrum-radio-quasars. Alternatively, hadronic models are also able to correctly reproduce the γ-ray emission from blazars, although they are in general disfavored for bright quasars and rapid flares. Aims. The blazar PKS 1424+240 is a rare example of a luminous HBL, and we aim to determine which is the emission process most likely responsible for its γ-ray emission. This will impact more generally our comprehension of blazar emission models, and how they are related to the luminosity of the source and the peak frequency of the spectral energy distribution. Methods. We have investigated different blazar emission models applied to the spectral energy distribution of PKS 1424+240. Among leptonic models, we study a one-zone SSC model (including a systematic study of the parameter space), a two-zone SSC model, and an EIC model. We then investigated a blazar hadronic model, and finally a scenario in which the γ-ray emission is associated with cascades in the line-of-sight produced by cosmic rays from the source. Results. After a systematic study of the parameter space of the one-zone SSC model, we conclude that this scenario is not compatible with γ-ray observations of PKS 1424+240. A two-zone SSC scenario can alleviate this issue, as well as an EIC solution. For the latter, the external photon field is assumed to be the infra-red radiation from the dusty torus, otherwise the VHE γ-ray emission would have been significantly absorbed. Alternatively, hadronic models can satisfactorily reproduce the γ-ray emission from PKS 1424+240, both as in-source emission and as cascade emission.
We analyze the features of strongly interacting matter in the presence of nonzero isospin chemical potential μI, within a nonlocal two-flavor Polyakov-loop extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model. ...For a system at finite temperature T, we describe the behavior of various thermodynamic quantities and study the phase diagram in the μI − T plane. In particular, it is found that for values of μI larger than the pion mass and temperatures lower than a critical value of about 170 MeV the system lies in an isospin symmetry broken phase signalled by the presence of a nonzero pion condensate. Our results for the phase diagram are found to be in better agreement with those arising from lattice QCD calculations, as compared to the predictions from other theoretical approaches like the local PNJL model.
We study the features of low energy strong interactions for a system at zero temperature and finite baryon and isospin chemical potentials, in the framework of a Nambu–Jona-Lasinio-like model that ...includes nonlocal four-point interactions. We analyze the phase transitions corresponding to chiral symmetry restoration and pion condensation, comparing our results with those obtained from local NJL-like models and lattice QCD calculations. Since 2005 September, the Whipple 10 m Gamma-ray Telescope has been operated primarily as a blazar monitor. The five northern hemisphere blazars that have already been detected at the Whipple ...Observatory, Markarian 421 (Mrk 421), H1426+428, Mrk 501, 1ES 1959+650, and 1ES 2344+514, are monitored routinely each night that they are visible. We report on the Mrk 421 observations taken from 2005 November to 2006 June in the gamma-ray, X-ray, optical, and radio bands. During this time, Mrk 421 was found to be variable at all wavelengths probed. Both the variability and the correlations among different energy regimes are studied in detail here. A tentative correlation, with large spread, was measured between the X-ray and gamma-ray bands, while no clear correlation was evident among the other energy bands. In addition to this, the well-sampled spectral energy distribution of Mrk 421 (1101+384) is presented for three different activity levels. The observations of the other blazar targets will be reported separately.

IceTop, the surface component of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole, is an air shower array with an area of 1km2. The detector allows a detailed exploration of the mass composition of ...primary cosmic rays in the energy range from about 100TeV to 1EeV by exploiting the correlation between the shower energy measured in IceTop and the energy deposited by muons in the deep ice. In this paper we report on the technical design, construction and installation, the trigger and data acquisition systems as well as the software framework for calibration, reconstruction and simulation. Finally the first experience from commissioning and operating the detector and the performance as an air shower detector will be discussed.
The variability of the blazar Markarian 421 in TeV gamma rays over a 14-year time period has been explored with the Whipple 10m telescope. It is shown that the dynamic range of its flux variations is ...large and similar to that in X-rays. A correlation between the X-ray and TeV energy bands is observed during some bright flares and when the complete data sets are binned on long timescales. The main database consists of 878.4h of observation with the Whipple telescope, spread over 783 nights. The peak energy response of the telescope was 400GeV with 20% uncertainty. This is the largest database of any TeV-emitting active galactic nucleus (AGN) and hence was used to explore the variability profile of Markarian 421. The time-averaged flux from Markarian 421 over this period was 0.446±0.008Crab flux units. The flux exceeded 10Crab flux units on three separate occasions. For the 2000–2001 season the average flux reached 1.86Crab units, while in the 1996–1997 season the average flux was only 0.23Crab units.
