A case of malignant schwannoma of the larynx in a 9 year old boy is reported. The lesion recurred 29 months later with the same histological pattern. Sections of tubular adenomas (n = 40), ulcertive colitis (n = 97) and hyperplastic polyps (n = 31) were examined by immunoperoxidase staining to carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in order to assess its ...potential diagnostic value in predicting malignant potential of these lesions. We compared the degree of epithelial abnormality in these mucosal specimens with the extent of immunoperoxidase staining for CEA. We found that CEA staining correlated with the degree of epithelial alteration in tubular adenoma and ulcerative colitis groups. Scattered weakly positive staining was found in eight of 31 hyperplastic polyps. High tissue expression of CEA, when combined with histologic dysplasia, may prove to be an additional factor in the evaluation of malignant potential in ulcerative colitis specimens and adenomas.
In rats, equimolar oral doses of 14Cclofibrate and 14cclofibric acid produced essentially the same profiles of blood levels, tissue distribution and excretion of radioactivity. Both compounds were ...completely absorbed, and all radioactivity found in the serum was due to clofibric acid (CPIB). Tissues contained readily detectable radioactivity levels, but the concentration was generally lower than in serum. A large proportion of CPIB in liver, heart, kidney, fat and muscle was associated with intracellular space. In rat urine, CPIB was present both free and conjugated with glucuronic acid. Approximately 97% of the serum CPIB was not conjugated. Identical decreases in serum lipids and hepatic cholesterol synthesis were observed in rats treated for 1 week with either compound. In dogs, the serum contained 40% more radioactivity after 14Cclofibric acid than after an equimolar oral dose of 14Cclofibrate; approximately 88% of the serum radioactivity was due to CPIB. Some biliary excretion was detected. The extent of binding to serum protein varied with concentration of CPIB and with the species; the affinity was in the order man greater than dog greater than rat. The results demonstrate that clofibric acid and clofibrate are metabolically and pharmacologically equivalent in rats, but not in dogs. The data are in accordance with the view that the pharmacological activity of clofibrate is due to clofibric acid.
Perfect worker self-management requires certain social presuppositions, ie, abolition of vertical division of labor, & the elimination of opposition between social production & political ...administration. The Yugoslav system of self-management is far from ridding itself from these two aspects of social division. The possibility is discussed of introducing self-determination & decision making on the level of the workplace, based on experiences with the sociotechnical approach. However, it is obvious that sociotechnical change in itself cannot seriously threaten the established relation of power. It simply renders possible the application of real self-management on the level of production, with other desirable social changes left for an uncertain future. HA
