A cross-sectional study was conducted to analyze a convenience sample of patients seeking treatment for cervical spine conditions.
To develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of a ...comprehensive, disease-specific questionnaire for characterizing complaints of neck pain and evaluating the outcomes of treatments for these complaints.
There currently are a number of generic and disease-specific instruments for assessing complaints of neck pain. None comprehensively cover the wide range of factors considered essential in evaluating treatment outcomes.
The authors developed a comprehensive, disease-specific questionnaire for characterizing complaints of neck pain and evaluating the outcomes of treatments for these complaints. In this study, 216 patients who underwent surgery for cervical spine disorders completed the Cervical Spine Outcomes Questionnaire before treatment, then at 3 and 6 months after treatment. The data were used to evaluate the reliability, validity, and responsiveness of the questionnaire.
The authors have shown that the Cervical Spine Outcomes Questionnaire has high test-retest reliability, good construct validity, and responsiveness to change after treatment.
The Cervical Spine Outcomes Questionnaire is a comprehensive, disease-specific instrument for assessing complaints of neck pain and evaluating the outcomes of treatments for these complaints. It provides information on demographics, pain severity, functional disability, psychological distress, physical symptoms, health care utilization, and satisfaction. It appears to be acceptable to patients, easy to administer, highly reliable, valid, and responsive. It should be considered for use in monitoring patients with cervical spine conditions and in studies of cervical spine disorders and their treatments.
In this study we investigated whether a visual illusion located in far space alters a person's open-loop, target-directed walking path in the same manner as it alters the perception of the target's ...position. Through the use of immersive VR the subject was able to walk physically to the location of a target embedded in a scene that was manipulated to create a visual illusion, known as the induced Roelofs effect. This illusion has been shown to alter the perception of a target's position. The experiment consisted of two tasks: a perception task and an action task. In the perception task, subjects viewed the scene for 1 s, it disappeared, and they were to report the target's location verbally. The results showed that the visual illusion altered the reported positions in all but one subject. In the action task, subjects viewed the scene for 1 s, it disappeared, and the subjects were asked to walk to the target's location. The results showed that the illusion significantly altered the walking paths of most of the women and less than half of the men. A significant gender effect was observed; women's walking paths deviated, on average, by 7.1 degrees and men's, by only 2.0 degrees . These results indicate that action tasks in far space are susceptible to the effects of visual illusions, unlike the action tasks in near space that reportedly have been resistant to them. Furthermore, the significant gender effect suggests that men and women either have different strategies and/or employ different mechanisms when executing a visually guided task in far space.
The purpose of the present study was to gather data regarding the implementation of Prodigy in elementary schools in a mid-sized school district in the southern United States. Prodigy is a free, ...adaptive mathematics game provided by Prodigy Education. The program integrates curriculum-aligned mathematics content (Grades 1-8) in a game-based learning program. It is a role-playing game designed to engage students using adaptive technology. Using students' responses to mathematics questions, the program identifies gaps in students' understanding and works with them by reinforcing prerequisite skills and then progressing to more difficult concepts. Using a case-study approach, the authors visited two schools and conducted interviews, focus groups, and classroom observations to examine implementation and outcomes. They also examined student achievement and usage data from the 2018-2019 school year.
The present evaluation study sought to determine how LightSail is implemented within schools in three public school districts, Evergreen Public Schools (EPS), Denver Public Schools (DPS), and Oakland ...Unified School District (OUSD). Case studies conducted in a subsample of schools within the three districts included classroom observations, interviews, and focus groups. In addition, a survey was administered to teachers and students in two of the districts and usage data were collected from all three districts. Teachers, principals, coaches, and students found great value in the LightSail experience. Students responded enthusiastically to the opportunity to express themselves through self-selection of texts and the option to read without interruption for a period of time.
