In this paper, we present the results of characterizing the properties of the Moravian Instruments G4‐16000 CCD cameras, based on the Kodak KAF‐16803 chip. Such cameras are widely used in several ...robotic telescope projects, as well as by amateurs. We demonstrate both large light response nonlinearity (up to tens of percents) and significant bias level instability of these cameras, and outline possible ways of overcoming these problems.

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a project to build a new generation ground-based gamma-ray observatory. Among other goals, the project aims to achieve high precision of gamma-ray energy ...measurement while maximizing the use of observation time. These objectives require detailed and fast information about atmospheric conditions, particularly the transparency which includes cloudiness (including thin high-altitude clouds) and aerosol content. This knowledge is required not only to select and calibrate data after observation, but also to make on-the-fly scheduling decisions. To provide such data without interfering with the observation (as would be the case when using laser-based methods), we propose to use the “FRAM” (F(/Ph)otometric Robotic Atmospheric Monitor) device, which is a small robotic astronomical telescope with a large field of view and a sensitive CCD camera. FRAM will use stellar photometry to measure atmospheric extinction across the field of view of the CTA. The fast robotic mount of the telescope allows quick observation of multiple fields when the array is split and even a check of the conditions in the directions of the upcoming observations. The FRAM concept is built upon experience gained with a similar device operated at the Pierre Auger Observatory.
Many atmospheric and climatic criteria have to be taken into account for the selection of a suitable site for the next generation of imaging air-shower Cherenkov telescopes, the "Cherenkov Telescope ...Array" CTA. Such data are not available with sufficient precision, thus a comparison of the proposed sites and final decision based on a comprehensive characterization is impossible. Identical cross-calibrated instruments have been developed which allow for precise comparison between sites, the cross-validation of existing data, and the ground-validation of satellite data. The site characterization work package of the CTA consortium opted to construct and deploy 9 copies of an autonomous multi-purpose weather sensor, incorporating an infrared cloud sensor, a newly developed sensor for measuring the light of the night sky, and an All-Sky-Camera, the whole referred to as Autonomous Tool for Measuring Observatory Site COnditions PrEcisely (ATMOSCOPE). We present here the hardware that was combined into the ATMOSCOPE and characterize its performance.
Modern cosmic ray experiments consisting of large array of particle detectors measure the signals of electromagnetic or muon components or their combination. The correction for an amount of ...atmosphere passed is applied to the surface detector signal before its conversion to the shower energy. Either Monte Carlo based approach assuming certain composition of primaries or indirect estimation using real data and assuming isotropy of arrival directions can be used. Toy surface arrays of different sensitivities to electromagnetic and muon components are assumed in MC simulations to study effects imposed on attenuation curves for varying composition or possible high energy anisotropy. The possible sensitivity of the attenuation curve to the mass composition is also tested for different array types focusing on a future apparatus that can separate muon and electromagnetic component signals.
We study basic characteristics of distributions of the depths of shower maximum in air showers caused by cosmic rays with the highest energies. The consistency between their average values and ...widths, and their energy dependences are discussed within a simple phenomenological model of shower development independently of assumptions about detailed features of high--energy interactions. It is shown that reliable information on primary species can be derived within a partition method. We present examples demonstrating implications for the changes in mass composition of primary cosmic rays.
Large surface arrays of current cosmic ray experiments measure the signals of electromagnetic or muonic components or their combination. The correction to the zenith angle (the attenuation curve) has ...to be taken into account before the signal is converted to the shower energy. Either Monte Carlo simulations or indirect estimation using collected data (Constant Intensity Cut method) can be used. However, the assumptions of composition or isotropy used for the determination of the attenuation curve can still influence the final physics results such as the energy spectrum, or modify anisotropy searches and composition analysis. Using simplified Toy Monte Carlo with an output from CORSIKA simulations we try to find several examples of what kind of effects can be caused by the methods of inferring the attenuation curve. Surface arrays of different sensitivities to electromagnetic and muonic components were considered.
A 3-day international workshop on atmospheric monitoring and calibration for high-energy astroparticle detectors, with a view towards next-generation facilities. The atmosphere is an integral ...component of many high-energy astroparticle detectors. Imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes and cosmic-ray extensive air shower detectors are the two instruments driving the rapidly evolving fields of very-high- and ultra-high-energy astrophysics. In these instruments, the atmosphere is used as a giant calorimeter where cosmic rays and gamma rays deposit their energy and initiate EASs; it is also the medium through which the resulting Cherenkov light propagates. Uncertainties in real-time atmospheric conditions and in the fixed atmospheric models typically dominate all other systematic errors. With the improved sensitivity of upgraded IACTs such as H.E.S.S.-II and MAGIC-II and future facilities like the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) and JEM-EUSO, statistical uncertainties are expected to be significantly reduced, leaving the atmosphere as the limiting factor in the determination of astroparticle spectra. Varying weather conditions necessitate the development of suitable atmospheric monitoring to be integrated in the overall instrument calibration, including Monte Carlo simulations. With expertise distributed across multiple collaborations and scientific domains, an interdisciplinary workshop is being convened to advance progress on this critical and timely topic.
Following the detection of a long GRB 190919B by INTEGRAL (INTErnational Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory), we obtained an optical photometric sequence of its optical counterpart. The light curve of ...the optical emission exhibits an unusually steep rise ∼100 s after the initial trigger. This behaviour is not expected from a ‘canonical’ GRB optical afterglow. As an explanation, we propose a scenario consisting of two superimposed flares: an optical flare originating from the inner engine activity followed by the hydrodynamic peak of an external shock. The inner-engine nature of the first pulse is supported by a marginal detection of flux in hard X-rays. The second pulse eventually concludes in a slow constant decay, which, as we show, follows the closure relations for a slow cooling plasma expanding into the constant interstellar medium and can be seen as an optical afterglow sensu stricto.
We present a measurement of the cosmic-ray spectrum above 100 PeV using the part of the surface detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory that has a spacing of 750 m. An inflection of the spectrum is ...observed, confirming the presence of the so-called second-knee feature. The spectrum is then combined with that of the 1500 m array to produce a single measurement of the flux, linking this spectral feature with the three additional breaks at the highest energies. The combined spectrum, with an energy scale set calorimetrically via fluorescence telescopes and using a single detector type, results in the most statistically and systematically precise measurement of spectral breaks yet obtained. These measurements are critical for furthering our understanding of the highest energy cosmic rays.
