Results are presented on the analysis of the Nimbus-7 satellite data set obtained on regional and seasonal variations in global cloud cover. Four midseason months (April, July, and October 1979 and ...January 1980) were analyzed for the total cloud amount, the cloud amounts at high, middle, and low altitudes, the cirrus and deep convective clouds, and the cloud and clear-sky 11.5 micron-derived radiances; in addition, noon versus midnight cloud amounts were examined. The Nimbus-7 data are compared with three previously published cloud climatologies, and the differences among these data sets are discussed.
Abstract Introduction Dysfunction of the cholinergic neurotransmitter system is present in Parkinson’s disease, Parkinson’s disease related dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies, and is thought to ...contribute to cognitive deficits in these patients. In vivo imaging of the cholinergic system in these diseases may be of value to monitor central cholinergic disturbances and to select cases in which treatment with cholinesterase inhibitors could be beneficial. The muscarinic receptor tracer 123 Iiododexetimide, predominantly reflecting M1 receptor binding, may be an appropriate tool for imaging of the cholinergic system by means of SPECT. In this study, we used 123 Iiododexetimide to study the effects of a 6-hydroxydopamine lesion (an animal model of Parkinson’s disease) on the muscarinic receptor availability in the rat brain. Methods Rats (n = 5) were injected in vivo at 10–13 days after a confirmed unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine lesion. Muscarinic receptor availability was measured bilaterally in multiple brain areas on storage phosphor images by region of interest analysis. Results Autoradiography revealed a consistent and statistically significant lower 123 Iiododexetimide binding in all examined neocortical areas on the ipsilateral side of the lesion as compared to the contralateral side. In hippocampal and subcortical areas, such asymmetry was not detected. Conclusions This study suggests that evaluation of muscarinic receptor availability in dopamine depleted brains using 123 Iiododexetimide is feasible. We conclude that 6-hydroxydopamine lesions induce a decrease of neocortical muscarinic receptor availability. We hypothesize that this arises from down regulation of muscarinic postsynaptic M1 receptors due to hyperactivation of the cortical cholinergic system in response to dopamine depletion. Advances in knowledge In rats, dopamine depletion provokes a decrease in neocortical muscarinic receptor availability, which is evaluable by 123 Iiododexetimide imaging. Implications for patient care This study may further underline the role of a dysregulated muscarinic system in patients with Lewy body disorders.
Bruton's tyrosine kinase (BTK) kinase is a member of the TEC kinase family and is a key regulator of the B-cell receptor (BCR)-mediated signaling pathway. It is important for B-cell maturation, ...proliferation, survival and metastasis. Pharmacological inhibition of BTK is clinically effective against a variety of B-cell malignances, such as mantle cell lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and activated B-cell-diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. MNK kinase is one of the key downstream regulators in the RAF-MEK-ERK signaling pathway and controls protein synthesis via regulating the activity of eIF4E. Inhibition of MNK activity has been observed to moderately inhibit the proliferation of AML cells. Through a structure-based drug-design approach, we have discovered a selective and potent BTK/MNK dual kinase inhibitor (QL-X-138), which exhibits covalent binding to BTK and noncovalent binding to MNK. Compared with the BTK kinase inhibitor (PCI-32765) and the MNK kinase inhibitor (cercosporamide), QL-X-138 enhanced the antiproliferative efficacies in vitro against a variety of B-cell cancer cell lines, as well as AML and CLL primary patient cells, which respond moderately to BTK inhibitor in vitro. The agent can effectively arrest the growth of lymphoma and leukemia cells at the G0-G1 stage and can induce strong apoptotic cell death. These primary results demonstrate that simultaneous inhibition of BTK and MNK kinase activity might be a new therapeutic strategy for B-cell malignances.
The Maritime Aerosol Network (MAN) has been collecting data over the oceans since November 2006. Over 80 cruises were completed through early 2010 with deployments continuing. Measurement areas ...included various parts of the Atlantic Ocean, the Northern and Southern Pacific Ocean, the South Indian Ocean, the Southern Ocean, the Arctic Ocean and inland seas. MAN deploys Microtops handheld sunphotometers and utilizes a calibration procedure and data processing traceable to AERONET. Data collection included areas that previously had no aerosol optical depth (AOD) coverage at all, particularly vast areas of the Southern Ocean. The MAN data archive provides a valuable resource for aerosol studies in maritime environments. In the current paper we present results of AOD measurements over the oceans, and make a comparison with satellite AOD retrievals and model simulations.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) plays an important role in the treatment of patients with refractory Somatic Symptom Disorder and related disorders with complex problems and/or somatic or ...psychiatric comorbidity (complex SSD).
To gain insight into the possible role of (experiential) acceptance in improved quality of life during and after treatment.
Observational longitudinal study in 41 patients with complex SSD treated at Altrecht Psychosomatic Medicine Eikenboom. They completed online questionnaires around the start and completion of treatment and after six months of follow-up. Assessed were experiential acceptance (AAQ-II-NL) and three aspects of quality of life (RAND-36: mental health, physical functioning, general health perception). The associations between changes in acceptance and quality of life were determined.
Acceptance increased significantly from treatment initiation to follow-up. Mental health increased significantly between start and end of treatment, and general health perception increased significantly in the follow-up period. Physical functioning did not change. During treatment, an increase in acceptance was significantly associated with improvement in mental health and general health perception; during follow-up, an increase in acceptance was associated with an improvement in mental health.
The current study demonstrates that an increase in experiential acceptance goes hand in hand with an improvement in mental health and general health perception. These results indicate the potential importance of acceptance-based treatment in patients with complex SSD. Experimental research with more frequent measurements is needed to test a temporal relationship between (first) increased acceptance and (then) improved quality of life.
To improve the interpretation of surface cryospheric albedo from satellite sensor data, diurnal measurements of the spectral bi-directional reflectance of a commonly-found fresh-water ice type were ...made, from which hemispherical reflectance can be derived. The purpose of this study is to document its clear-sky, bi-directional reflectance characteristics in the visible (650–670 nm) and near-infrared (810–840 nm) region, assess the diurnal nature of the reflectance, and quantify the surface anisotropy. Bi-directional reflectances of the re-frozen slush ice measured show a spectral dependence and change significantly with solar zenith angle. Considerable variation occurs at each view angle and among view angles throughout the day. Although diurnal reflectance patterns were similar in both bands, magnitudes varied greatly, being highest in the visible and lowest in the near-infrared region. With the exception of peak saturated (specular) values in the forward scatter direction, bi-directional reflectance was generally highest in the morning when the surface and the illumination were most diffuse in character. The exitance (πN) computed from nadir radiance (N) is compared to the measured hemispheric exitance (M). The πN/M ratios, an index of anisotropy, reveal an anisotropy that increases with increasing solar zenith angle and is more pronounced in the near-infrared region.
The aim of this study was to determine whether there is a difference in the presence of the lateral intercondylar ridge and the lateral bifurcate ridge between patients with sub-acute and chronic ACL ...injuries. We hypothesized that the ridges would be present less often with chronic ACL deficiency. Twenty-five patients with a chronic ACL injury were matched for age and gender to 25 patients with a sub-acute ACL injury. The lateral intercondylar ridge and lateral bifurcate ridge were scored as either present, absent, or indeterminate due to insufficient visualization by three blinded observers. The kappa for the three observers was .61 for the lateral intercondylar ridge and .58 for the lateral bifurcate ridge. The lateral intercondylar ridge was present in 88% of the sub-acute patients and 88% of the chronic patients. The lateral bifurcate ridge was present in 48% of the sub-acute and 48% of the chronic patients. This matched-pairs case–control study was unable to show a difference in the presence of the femoral bony ridges between patients with acute and chronic ACL injuries. The authors would suggest looking for the ridges as a landmark of the native ACL insertion site during ACL reconstruction in both acute and chronic ACL injuries.

Disposal of the overwhelming amounts of excess wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) sludge is an increasing financial and environmental problem, and new methods to reduce the amount of excess sludge are therefore required. In the natural environment, interactions between multiple macroinvertebrate detritivores mediate the degradation of organic matter. Macroinvertebrates may thus also be able to degrade WWTP sludge, but may meanwhile be impacted by the associated contaminants. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to examine if WWTPs contaminant concentrations and profiles affect the biotic interactions and macroinvertebrate mediated degradation of sludge. Assessing degradation of sludge from three WWTPs differing in contaminant profile by (combinations of) three macroinvertebrate detritovore taxa, revealed that macroinvertebrate enhanced sludge degradation was WWTP and taxa combination specific. Yet, taxa combinations only had an additional positive effect on sludge degradation when compared to single taxa in sludge with a higher contaminant load. This was confirmed by the results of a Cu-spiked sludge degradation experiment, indicating a possible effect of biotic interactions. It was concluded that macroinvertebrates are a potential tool for the reduction of excess WWTP sludge, and that using multispecies assemblages of detritivorous macroinvertebrates may increase the resilience of this additional treatment step.
Despite recent progress in our understanding of carotenogenesis in plants, the mechanisms that govern overall carotenoid accumulation remain largely unknown. The Orange (Or) gene mutation in ...cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var botrytis) confers the accumulation of high levels of β-carotene in various tissues normally devoid of carotenoids. Using positional cloning, we isolated the gene representing Or and verified it by functional complementation in wild-type cauliflower. Or encodes a plastid-associated protein containing a DnaJ Cys-rich domain. The Or gene mutation is due to the insertion of a long terminal repeat retrotransposon in the Or allele. Or appears to be plant specific and is highly conserved among divergent plant species. Analyses of the gene, the gene product, and the cytological effects of the Or transgene suggest that the functional role of Or is associated with a cellular process that triggers the differentiation of proplastids or other noncolored plastids into chromoplasts for carotenoid accumulation. Moreover, we demonstrate that Or can be used as a novel genetic tool to induce carotenoid accumulation in a major staple food crop. We show here that controlling the formation of chromoplasts is an important mechanism by which carotenoid accumulation is regulated in plants.
