Quinoa (
Chenopodium quinoa Wild.
) is a drought and salinity-tolerant crop that originated in the Andes over 7000 years ago. It is adapted to different agroecological areas and can be grown from sea ...level to an altitude of 4000 m. The outstanding nutritional status of quinoa, with its high content of proteins, vitamins, and minerals, makes it a promising crop able to combat hunger and malnutrition in different countries in the 21st century. Quinoa cultivation has expanded from South America to Africa, Europe, Asia, and North America. Reviewing quinoa cropping practices will provide farmers with adequate recommendations for improving the agronomic and environmental sustainability of quinoa cultivation worldwide. For this reason, we conducted a systematic review of agronomic management practices in 148 field experiments conducted worldwide from 2000 to 2022. The collected data from the literature were analyzed and presented by location to determine high-performing genotypes, optimal planting dates, and other adequate cropping practices affecting quinoa performance and yield. Results showed that quinoa could be successfully cultivated in the new farming areas. Quinoa yields were higher than those reported in its place of origin, ranging from 108 kg ha

, obtained by KU-2 in Washington State, to 9667 kg ha

, obtained by Longli in China. Although quinoa is considered a crop with low input requirements, positive grain yield response was observed following increasing fertilization rates. Quinoa needs 2 to 4.6 kg of nitrogen to produce 1q of grain yield. In terms of phosphorus and potassium, quinoa needs 3.7 kg P

O
5
and 4.3 kg K
2
O to produce 1 ton of total biomass. Quinoa has low water requirements (300-400 mm). However, a positive response was recorded with water quantities up to 866 mm. During our investigation, weed control in quinoa crop is still undeveloped and usually done manually. Research addressing this issue can increase quinoa yields and decrease the production cost. Downey mildew and birds’ attack are the major phytosanitary problems affecting quinoa grain yield. Other pests such as miners and aphids can also affect the health of quinoa, but their injury is not a serious problem. After the harvest, saponins found in the out layer of the seed can be removed through washing and mechanical pearling process, but the latter technic was found to be efficient and cost effective to reduce the saponin content. Our results constitute the first recommendation base for the adequate worldwide agronomic practices of quinoa crop.

Rs showed dissolution rates >50%, suggesting their suitability for direct application on acid soils. Being an important source of sulphur and some P, PG if combined with PR, can promote and complement PR’s direct use as fertilizer on acid soils. Moreover, the development of new fertilizer products by combining these two materials should be encouraged.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of mixtures of the phosphate industry’s by-products and sewage sludge on some heavy metals (Pb, Zn and Cd) in the soil–plant system and the ...microbial load (bacteria, fungi and actinobacteria) in the soil. The experimental layout was a completely randomized design with ten treatments and four replications. The treatments consist of a combination of five substrates: phosphogypsum (PG), phosphate sludge (PS), sewage sludge (SS), phosphate waste rocks (PWR) and original mine topsoil (TS). Heavy metals analysis, phytoextraction efficiency (PEE) and bioconcentration factor (BCF) were carried out for three Ryegrass cuts. The microbial load of each treatment was determined at the end of the experiment. The results showed that the Pb, Zn and Cd contents of the treatments were well below the permissible limits given in the literature. The highest BCF and PEE were with treatment T4. Furthermore, bacteria, fungi and actinobacteria were significantly influenced by the different proportions of by-products used in the treatments, with the highest richness observed for the T4 treatment. For a successful reclamation of mine sites, it would be useful to determine the speciation of metals in the soil solution and the microbial genetic diversity.
This study aimed to assess the agronomic value of solar-dried sludge (SDS) and the transfer of Cr, Ni, Pb, and Cu to wheat (
Triticum aestivum
) and faba bean (
Vicia faba
). A greenhouse experiment ...was performed involving two rates of SDS (15 t/ha and 30 t/ha) from an activated sludge-based wastewater treatment plant. In addition to the single use of an SDS amendment, co-application of SDS and mineral fertilizers was also included to determine the best scenario resulting in high yields and less negative implications on the environment. Data for both wheat and faba bean showed that applying SDS at 30 t/ha led to competitive yields compared to the ones obtained previously, while 15 t/ha of SDS and mineral fertilizers were co-applied. The use of SDS increased soil organic matter, slightly decreased the pH value, and increased soil salinity. The contents of Ni, Cu, and Pb were not significantly affected by the application of SDS. Only Cr showed high soil concentrations in proportion to the increasing rates of SDS. The bioaccumulation of heavy metals in roots was more important in 30 t/ha than that in 15 t/ha amended soil. In the case of wheat, the bioconcentration factor (BCF) root values correspond to the following order: Cr (0.89) >Cu (0.85)> Ni (0.28)> Pb (0.22). In the case of faba bean, BCF roots were observed as follows: Cu (1.04 > Ni (0.37)> Cr (0.16)> Pb (0.15). Wheat excluded Cr, Ni, and Pb from the uptake by shoots, and Cu was translocated from roots to shoots with a percentage of 11% at 30 t/ha of applied SDS. Faba beans demonstrated more important values of HM’s translocation by respecting this order (Ni (37.7%) > cu (30.24%)> Cr (17.59%), while Pb was excluded from the translocation. No significant difference was observed regarding the translocation index when the sludge rate has been duplicated from 15 t/ha to 30 t/ha. Based on these outcomes, SDS used at the rate of 30 t/ha is the best scenario to amend the soil and provide nutrients to plants. Wheat is translocating less heavy metal to the edible part; it is, thus, the most suitable crop to be involved in the current context.
Sewage sludge (SS) is a biosolid that includes nutrients, organic matter, and a mixture of micropollutants and pathogens. Regarding its final disposal, several criteria should be met to avoid the ...dissemination of the included micropollutants in the environment. Hence, an adequate treatment prior to SS disposal is highly required. Solar drying is being acknowledged as a sustainable process of SS treatment, yet it is still unclear to what extent this technique is efficient. This review aimed to assess the impact of solar drying on the composition of SS from environmental and agronomic standpoints. Herein, we present the state-of-the-art with regard to solar drying efficiency in terms of water content reduction, DM increase, agronomic parameters evolvement, and micropollutant stabilization including pathogens, heavy metals (HMs), and organic micropollutants. The reviewed literature is mostly focused on two drying cycles: summer and winter, thus addressing the extreme conditions met within a year with respect to temperature. Under different climatic conditions, more than 80% of dry matter is reached during summer. In winter, the efficiency decreases to an average of 50% of DM. Negatively correlated to DM content, pathogen concentration in SS significantly decreased, while DM increased. Thus, more efficiency in terms of pathogen abatement is reported in summer than in winter (e.g., 96% against 60% during summer and winter, respectively, under semi-arid climate). The high reliance of solar drying efficiency on weather has been deduced in terms of DM content increase and pathogen removal. Where climatic conditions are not favorable for solar drying, hybrid design and liming are the highly recommended methods to remove pathogens from SS. A few studies on the fate of HMs in SS during solar drying concluded that solar drying does not involve any removal mechanisms. Changes in HM speciation in solar-dried sludge were reported highlighting a decrease in their mobility. As for organic micropollutants (PAHs and antibiotics), only their occurrence in SS is reported in the literature, and their behavior during the solar drying process is still not addressed. This review allowed concluding the following: 1) solar drying is a sustainable, relevant process for SS handing in terms of volume reduction and pathogen removal, particularly in semi-arid regions; 2) solar drying does not lower the SS agronomic value and does not remove HMs, but under semi-arid climate, it changes HM speciation and reduces their mobility. The gap in research regarding organic micropollutant and heavy metal behavior during SS solar drying has been emphasized as a way forward for research within this topic. Hence, more research is required to help stakeholders decide on the feasibility of an agricultural disposal of solar-dried sludge.
Conservation Agriculture is a farming system based on no mechanical soil disturbance, permanent soil cover, and crop diversification. A study was carried out in an on-farm field trial set up in ...Meknes (Morocco) under a long-term no-till (NT) system to evaluate the residual effect of one-time occasional tillage (OT) on crop performance, soil water, and water-use efficiency (WUE) one and two years after OT implementation. Shallow and deep options of OT were compared with common NT practices (with crop residue retention and with crop residue removal) for two consecutive seasons of 2021–2022 (year 1) and 2022–2023 (year 2). The four tillage practices were implemented in November 2020. Three crops were studied each year: durum wheat ( Triticum durum ), faba bean ( Vicia faba minor), and chickpea ( Cicer arietinum ) all grown under NT in both the years and arranged in four crop rotations. Our findings show that grain yield of wheat and chickpea was negatively affected by OT for all years considered. In wheat, there was a grain yield loss of 18 and 20% for shallow and deep OT, respectively compared to NT with crop residue retention. In chickpea, the grain yield loss was as high as 47 and 49% for shallow and deep OT, respectively. Average soil water storage measured at 0–60 cm at sowing was also lower in deep OT (133 mm) compared to NT with crop residue retention (151 mm) for all years and rotations considered. Yet, in wheat year 1, deep OT slightly improved soil water content at 30 cm depth compared to NT treatments. The comparison of WUE between treatments showed that, under NT with crop residue retention, the crops produced more grain and aboveground biomass per mm of water. Wheat/faba bean rotation had a greater grain yield and WUE (all years considered) and overall greater soil water content (year 1), compared to the wheat/chickpea rotation. The results suggest that the effects of OT on crop performance and water productivity in the short term can be adverse. On the other hand, grain yield of wheat can be improved by a judicious choice of legume to be used as a preceding crop.
Soil hydraulic properties are an important factor to optimize and adapt water management for a given crop. In this research, we compared two sources of soil information: iSDAsoil data and field data, in four regions in Morocco. PTFs developed by Dijkerman (Geoderma, 1988, 42, 29–49) presented the best performance, showing lower RMSE, Bias and MAE compared to other PTFs. Agriculture is facing many challenges, such as climate change, drought, and salinity, which call for urgent interventions for fast adaptation and crop diversification. The introduction of high-value ...and stress tolerant crops such as quinoa would be a judicious solution to overcome constraints related to abiotic stress and to increase land productivity and farmers’ incomes. The implementation of quinoa in Morocco has not been supported by a full valorization program to control the quality of quinoa seeds. The novelty of this work is to assess the pearling operation as an efficient method of saponins removal as well as the determination of total residual saponins. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of several pearling durations on nutrient and saponin content of quinoa seeds of three tested varieties (Puno, Titicaca, and ICBA-Q5). Five pearling durations were tested (0, 2, 4, 6, 7, and 8 min) using a locally manufactured pearling machine. The results indicated that a pearling duration of two minutes was enough to reduce total saponin content from 0.49% to 0.09% for Puno variety, from 0.37% to 0.07% for Titicaca variety, and from 0.57% to 0.1% for ICBA-Q5 variety. Our results showed that pearling slightly reduced protein, total fat, and moisture contents for all varieties except for Puno, where total fat content slightly increased with the pearling. Puno variety had the highest seed content in terms of protein and total fat; the ICBA-Q5 variety had the lowest. Titicaca had the highest bran content in terms of protein and total fat, ICBA-Q5 had the highest bran content in terms of ash and the lowest bran content in terms of protein and total fat, and Puno had the lowest bran content in terms of ash. Pearling had no significant effect on macronutrient contents in the processed seed, but it resulted in a very highly significant difference for most of them in the bran except for Mg and S. Regarding seed content in terms of micro-nutrients, statistical analysis showed significant differences between varieties in terms of Zn, Cu, and Mn contents, but no significant difference was recorded for Fe or B. Pearling had no significant effect on seed micronutrient contents. Therefore, to retain maximum nutritional content in the quinoa and maintain quinoa integrity, it is necessary to limit the pearling duration of quinoa to two minutes, which is enough to reduce saponin content below the Codex Standard threshold (0.12%).
The impact of soil water repellency (SWR) on soil phosphorus (P) mobility in surface water runoff remains contentious. Although SWR may cause a significant increase in surface runoff, especially in ...post-summer rainfall events, whether it contributes to background phosphorus losses remains unclear. Surface runoff and P concentrations in runoff were measured on hilly Allophanic pastoral soils with different water repellency levels using seven runoff collectors. Phosphorus fertilizer was broadcasted at 18 kg P ha−1 in the summer over dry soils. Runoff volumes and P concentrations were measured after each natural rain event prompting surface runoff. The highest runoff/rainfall ratios were observed at the early rainfall events following the dry summer and then decreased significantly by the end of autumn and winter. The post-summer surface runoff correlation with SWR had an R2 of 0.46, and hydrophobic soils had significantly higher runoff ratios than wettable soils. Measurements of the dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP) and total phosphorus (TP) in the surface runoff showed decreasing exponential trends, with the highest values recorded in the first runoff event following P fertilizer application, where over 90% of losses occurred (incidental losses). After the incidental loss phase, DRP concentrations were related to surface runoff ratio, soil P extractability by water, and SWR. Our data point to non-incidental TP loads being related to SWR (R2 = 0.53). The present results will improve the understanding of the SWR effect on surface runoff and will reconcile the controversy regarding its contribution to non-incidental P losses.

The development of anthroposols has been proposed as a new environmentally friendly approach to ensuring the successful revegetation of phosphate mining sites. The phosphate industry's by-products, ...including phosphogypsum (PG), phosphate sludge (PS), and sewage sludge (SS), can be valuable resources in restoring the ecological balance of mined soil areas. The aim of this study was to safely and sustainably restore the ecological integrity of the phosphate mining site through the evaluation of nutrients and heavy metals dynamics in soil and plant tissues of three tree species and treated by-products containing 65 % PG, 30 % PS, and 5 % SS. The tree species used were Pistacia atlantica, Schinus molle, and Eucalyptus globulus. The experimental layout was a randomised complete block design with six replicates and three treatments. Growth diameter, height, nutrient uptakes and heavy metal dynamic were evaluated from the rhizosphere soils and plant tissues over two years. Hierarchical head maps of correlations between the measured growth parameters, soil and nutrient uptakes of the tree species were analysed using a phylogenetic generalised linear mixed model. S. molle and E. globulus had higher average diameter and height than P. atlantica plants. P. atlantica and S. molle showed greater nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and magnesium concentrations than E. globulus trees. Tree growth parameters were closely linked to soil nutrient bioavailability. The heavy metal accumulation ratio was higher in the E. globulus and S. molle leaves than in stems. Using by-products could be valorised for rehabilitating mine sites together with E. globulus and S. molle species.
