We present a measurement of the W boson mass using data corresponding to 4.3 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected with the D0 detector during Run II at the Fermilab Tevatron pp collider. With a ...sample of 1,677,394 W → eν candidate events, we measure M(W) = 80.367 ± 0.026 GeV. This result is combined with an earlier D0 result determined using an independent Run II data sample, corresponding to 1 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity, to yield M(W) = 80.375 ± 0.023 GeV.
We report observation of the electroweak production of single top quarks in ppover collisions at sqrts=1.96 TeV based on 2.3 fb(-1) of data collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron ...Collider. Using events containing an isolated electron or muon and missing transverse energy, together with jets originating from the fragmentation of b quarks, we measure a cross section of sigma(ppover --> tb + X, tqb + X) = 3.94 + or - 0.88 pb. The probability to measure a cross section at this value or higher in the absence of signal is 2.5 x 10(-7), corresponding to a 5.0 standard deviation significance for the observation.
We report evidence for the simultaneous production of J/ψ and ϒ mesons in 8.1 fb^{-1} of data collected at sqrts=1.96 TeV by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab ppover ¯ Tevatron Collider. Events ...with these characteristics are expected to be produced predominantly by gluon-gluon interactions. In this analysis, we extract the effective cross section characterizing the initial parton spatial distribution, σ_{eff}=2.2±0.7(stat)±0.9(syst) mb.
We measure the charge asymmetry A ≡ (N++ - N--)/(N++ + N--) of like-sign dimuon events in 6.1 fb-1 of pp collisions recorded with the D0 detector at a center-of-mass energy square root(s) = 1.96 ...TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. From A we extract the like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry in semileptonic b-hadron decays: A(sl)(b) = -0.009 57 ± 0.002 51(stat) ± 0.001 46(sys). It differs by 3.2 standard deviations from the standard model prediction A(sl)(b)(SM) = (-2.3(-0.6)(+0.5)) × 10(-4), and provides first evidence of anomalous CP violation in the mixing of neutral B mesons.
Abstract
The Phase-I trigger readout electronics upgrade of the ATLAS
Liquid Argon calorimeters enhances the
physics reach of the experiment during the upcoming operation at
increasing Large Hadron ...Collider luminosities.
The new system, installed during the second Large Hadron Collider Long Shutdown,
increases the trigger readout granularity by up to a factor of ten
as well as its precision and range.
Consequently, the background rejection at trigger level is improved
through enhanced filtering algorithms utilizing the additional information
for topological discrimination of electromagnetic and hadronic shower shapes.
This paper presents the final designs of the new electronic elements,
their custom electronic devices, the procedures
used to validate their proper functioning, and the performance achieved
during the commissioning of this system.
The D0 Collaboration presents first evidence for the production of single top quarks at the Fermilab Tevatron ppover collider. Using a 0.9 fb(-1) dataset, we apply a multivariate analysis to ...separate signal from background and measure sigma(ppover -->tb+X,tqb+X)=4.9+/-1.4 pb. The probability to measure a cross section at this value or higher in the absence of a signal is 0.035%, corresponding to a 3.4 standard deviation significance. We use the cross section measurement to directly determine the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element that describes the Wtb coupling and find 0.68<|V(tb)|</=1 at 95% C.L. within the standard model.
Using data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, corresponding to 5.3 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity, we search for violation of Lorentz invariance by examining the ...ttover ¯ production cross section in lepton+jets final states. We quantify this violation using the standard-model extension framework, which predicts a dependence of the ttover ¯ production cross section on sidereal time as the orientation of the detector changes with the rotation of the Earth. Within this framework, we measure components of the matrices (c(Q))(μν33) and (c(U))(μν33) containing coefficients used to parametrize violation of Lorentz invariance in the top quark sector. Within uncertainties, these coefficients are found to be consistent with zero.
Using 7.3 fb⁻¹ of pp collisions collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron, we measure the distribution of the variable φ(η)*, which probes the same physical effects as the Z/γ* boson ...transverse momentum, but is less susceptible to the effects of experimental resolution and efficiency. A QCD prediction is found to describe the general features of the φ(η)* distribution, but is unable to describe its detailed shape or dependence on boson rapidity. A prediction that includes a broadening of transverse momentum for small values of the parton momentum fraction is strongly disfavored.
We present a measurement of the standard model CP violation parameter sin2 phi(1) based on a 29.1 fb(-1) data sample collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB ...asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider. One neutral B meson is fully reconstructed as a J/psi K(S), psi(2S)K(S), chi(c1)K(S), eta(c)K(S), J/psi K(L), or J/psi K(*0) decay and the flavor of the accompanying B meson is identified from its decay products. From the asymmetry in the distribution of the time intervals between the two B meson decay points, we determine sin2 phi(1) = 0.99+/-0.14(stat)+/-0.06(syst). We conclude that we have observed CP violation in the neutral B meson system.
