Information processing using quantum systems provides new paradigms for computation and communication and may yield insights into our understanding of the limits of quantum mechanics. However, ...realistic systems are never perfectly isolated from their environment, hence all quantum operations are subject to errors. Realization of a physical system for processing of quantum information that is tolerant of errors is a fundamental problem in quantum science and engineering. Here, we develop an architecture for quantum computation using electrically controlled semiconductor spins by extending the Loss-DiVincenzo scheme and by combining actively protected quantum memory and long-distance coupling mechanisms. Our approach is based on a demonstrated encoding of qubits in long-lived two-electron states, which immunizes qubits against the dominant error from hyperfine interactions. We develop a universal set of quantum gates compatible with active error suppression for these encoded qubits and an effective long-range interaction between the qubits by controlled electron transport. This approach yields a scalable architecture with favourable error thresholds for fault-tolerant operation, consistent with present experimental parameters.
Apoptosis is essential for normal development and maintenance of homeostasis, and disruption of apoptotic pathways is associated with multiple disease states, including cancer. Although initially ...identified as central regulators of apoptosis at the level of mitochondria, an important role for BCL-2 proteins at the endoplasmic reticulum is now well established. Signaling pathways emanating from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) are involved in apoptosis initiated by stimuli as diverse as ER stress, oncogene expression, death receptor (DR) ligation and oxidative stress, and the BCL-2 family is almost invariably implicated in the regulation of these pathways. This also includes Ca(2+)-mediated cross talk between ER and mitochondria during apoptosis, which contributes to the mitochondrial dynamics that support the core mitochondrial apoptosis pathway. In addition to the regulation of apoptosis, BCL-2 proteins at the ER also regulate autophagy, a survival pathway that limits metabolic stress, genomic instability and tumorigenesis. In cases where apoptosis is inhibited, however, prolonged autophagy can lead to cell death. This review provides an overview of ER-associated apoptotic and autophagic signaling pathways, with particular emphasis on the BCL-2 family proteins.
Redox regulation has been shown to be an important component of malignant cell survival. Tipping the cellular redox balance through pharmacologic regulation in favor of increasing intracellular ...reactive oxygen species (ROS) and/or depleting protective reducing metabolites (such as glutathione and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate) may lead to oxidative stress and resultant induction of apoptosis for the treatment of cancer. We review the biology and importance of ROS with regard to malignant and normal cells. Moreover, we discuss pre-clinical and clinical data regarding novel therapeutic agents that modulate the cellular redox system including buthionine sulfoximine, ascorbic acid, arsenic trioxide, imexon, and motexafin gadolinium as single-agents and in combination. Continued research is needed to better understand the mechanisms and specific apoptotic pathways involved in ROS-induced cell death, as well as, to determine the most rationale and effective combination of redox-active agents.
Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies show extreme properties with respect to the other Seyfert galaxies. Indeed, they are thought to be accreting at Eddington rates and to possess low-mass black ...holes. Therefore, they may represent a key class of objects for understanding the co-evolution of black holes and their host galaxies. We propose that NLS1s represent a class of active galactic nucleus in which the black hole growth is, and has always been, dominated by secular evolution. First, by looking at the NLS1 host galaxy properties in the literature, we show that the evolution of NLS1s is presently driven by secular processes, much more so than for broad-line Seyfert 1s (BLS1s). Secondly, we study the bulges of NLS1 and BLS1 galaxies. Our results demonstrate that NLS1 host bulges are pseudo-bulges and are statistically different from BLS1 bulges. This difference points to the particular importance of secular processes in the past evolution of their hosts. We build on this result to understand the implications on their evolution and the duration of their duty cycle. We show that NLS1s are not necessarily in a special phase of black hole growth and that several Gyr are required for their black hole masses to become similar to BLS1s. Finally, in the light of our results, we discuss the location of NLS1 galaxies on the M
BH-σ plane and speculate about the connection between the NLS1 galaxy properties and their black hole spin.
Although biodiversity can increase ecosystem productivity and adjacent ecosystems are often linked by resource flows between them, the relationship between biodiversity and resource subsidies is not ...well understood. Here we test the influence of biodiversity on resource subsidy flux by manipulating freshwater mussel species richness and documenting the effects on a trophic cascade from aquatic to terrestrial ecosystems. In a mesocosm experiment, mussel effects on algae were linked through stable isotope analyses to mussel-derived nitrogen subsidies, but mussel biodiversity effects on algal accumulation were not significant. In contrast, mussel biodiversity significantly increased aquatic insect emergence rates, because aquatic insects were responding to mussel-induced changes in algal community structure instead of algal accumulation. In turn, mussel biodiversity also significantly increased terrestrial spider abundance as spiders tracked increases in aquatic insect prey after a reproduction event. In a comparative field study, we found that sites with greater mussel species richness had higher aquatic insect emergence rates. These results show that, because food webs in adjacent ecosystems are often linked, biodiversity effects in one ecosystem can influence adjacent ecosystems as well.
Secondary lymphedema (SL)is a frequent and devastating complication of modern oncological therapy and filarial infections. A lack of a reliable preclinical model to investigate the underlying ...mechanism of clinical stage progression has limited the development of new therapeutic strategies. Current first line treatment has shown to be merely symptomatic and relies on lifetime use of compression garments and decongestive physiotherapy. In this study, we present the development of a secondary lymphedema model in 35 rats using pre- and intraoperative fluorescence-guided mapping of the lymphatics and microsurgical induction. In contrast to the few models reported so far, we decided to avoid the use of radiation for lymphedema induction. It turned out, that the model is nearly free of complications and capable of generating a statistically significant limb volume increase by water displacement measurements, sustained for at least 48 days. A translational, accurate lymphatic dysfunction was visualized by a novel VIS-NIR X-ray ICG-Clearance-Capacity imaging technology. For the first-time SL stage progression was validated by characteristic histological alterations, such as subdermal mast cell infiltration, adipose tissue deposition, and fibrosis by increased skin collagen content. Immunofluorescence confocal microscopy analysis suggested that stage progression is related to the presence of a characteristic α SMA+/HSP-47+/vimentin+ fibroblast subpopulation phenotype. These findings demonstrate that the in-vivo model is a reliable and clinically relevant SL model for the development of further secondary lymphedema therapeutic strategies and the analysis of the veiled molecular mechanisms of lymphatic dysfunction.

We analyze subarcsecond resolution interferometric CO line data for 12 submillimeter-luminous (S 850 Delta *mm >= 5 mJy) galaxies with redshifts between 1 and 3, presenting new data for 4 of them. ...Morphologically and kinematically, most of the 12 systems appear to be major mergers. Five of them are well-resolved binary systems, and seven are compact or poorly resolved. Of the four binary systems for which mass measurements for both separate components can be made, all have mass ratios of 1:3 or closer. Furthermore, comparison of the ratio of compact to binary systems with that observed in local ULIRGs indicates that at least a significant fraction of the compact submillimeter-luminous galaxies (SMGs) must also be late-stage mergers. In addition, the dynamical and gas masses we derive are most consistent with the lower end of the range of stellar masses published for these systems, favoring cosmological models in which SMGs result from mergers. These results all point to the same conclusion that most of the bright SMGs with L IR 5 X 1012 L are likely major mergers.
We report measurements of the cross correlation between temporal current fluctuations in two capacitively coupled quantum dots in the Coulomb blockade regime. The sign of the cross-spectral density ...is found to be tunable by gate voltage and source-drain bias. We find good agreement with the data by including an interdot Coulomb interaction in a sequential-tunneling model.
