We live under the illusion of progress: as long as GDP is going up and prices stay low, we accept poverty and pollution as unfortunate but inevitable byproducts of a successful economy. In fact, the ...infallibility of the free market and the necessity of endless growth are so ingrained in the public consciousness that they seem like scientific fact. Jon Erickson asks, why? With the planet in peril and humanity in crisis, how did we get duped into believing the fairytale of economics? And how can we get past the illusion to design an economy that is socially just and ecologically balanced?In The Progress Illusion, Erickson charts the rise of the economic worldview and its infiltration into our daily lives as a theory of everything. Drawing on his own experience as a young economist inoculated in the 1980s era of "greed is good," Erickson shows how pseudoscience came to dominate economic thought. He pokes holes in the conventional wisdom of neo-classical economics, illustrating how flawed theories about financial decision-making and maximizing efficiency ignore human psychology and morality. Most importantly, he demonstrates how that thinking shaped our politics and determined the course of American public policy. The result has been a system that perpetually concentrates wealth in the hands of a few, while depleting the natural resources on which economies are based. While the history of economics is dismal indeed, Erickson is part of a vigorous reform effort grounded in the realities of life on a finite planet. This new brand of economics is both gaining steam in academia and supporting social activism. The goal is people over profit, community over consumption, and resilience over recklessness. Erickson shows crafting a new economic story is the first step toward turning away from endless growth and towards enduring prosperity.
Trust is a key variable for successful natural resource management and is commonly the focus of conceptual and methodological development. Distrust, on the other hand, is frequently cited as an ...obstacle to management, but appears to be rarely defined, conceptually underdeveloped, and inconsistently examined. This systematic review protocol (OSF preregistration https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/GKUAW) was developed to answer two primary questions in relation to protected area and natural resource management: 1) How is distrust conceptualized, and 2) What methods are used to gather evidence of distrust? The aim is to provide a comprehensive overview of how distrust is theoretically developed and what questions are used to uncover distrust. Also, it will summarize findings on what leads to and results from distrust. Four academic and eight gray literature databases will be searched using Boolean keyword searches. Articles eligible for inclusion are those that present original research, gather and present evidence of distrust, and focus on protected areas and/or natural resource management. The review will result in a narrative synthesis that summarizes approaches to distrust within protected area and natural resource management.

The centrifuge is the gold standard for lab-based sample processing. While extremely efficient and robust, centrifuges are seldom used in the field due to the high-power requirements, size, and ...operational complexity. The lack of viable alternatives for remote sample collection has crippled the ability for mobile practitioners in human and animal medicine to reliably collect blood samples from their patients. There is no truly resource-independent solution that is able to perform highly efficient blood–plasma separation. Here, we describe our initial efforts in developing the High Efficiency Rapid Magnetic Erythrocyte Separator (H.E.R.M.E.S) sleeve, an apparatus that uses a magnetic bead-based separation assay in a scaled-up form factor to achieve highly efficient separation of erythrocytes from plasma within a short amount of time. The sleeve is easy-to-use, is completely resource independent, and achieves highly efficient separation in sample volumes as large as 1 mL by means of a unique mixing scheme. We demonstrate the performance of the sleeve with human blood samples and compare it against conventional end-over-end mixing.
Large-scale quantum computers will require quantum gate operations between widely separated qubits. A method for implementing such operations, known as quantum gate teleportation (QGT), requires only ...local operations, classical communication, and shared entanglement. We demonstrate QGT in a scalable architecture by deterministically teleporting a controlled-NOT (CNOT) gate between two qubits in spatially separated locations in an ion trap. The entanglement fidelity of our teleported CNOT is in the interval (0.845, 0.872) at the 95% confidence level. The implementation combines ion shuttling with individually addressed single-qubit rotations and detections, same- and mixed-species two-qubit gates, and real-time conditional operations, thereby demonstrating essential tools for scaling trapped-ion quantum computers combined in a single device.
IgE-mediated hypersensitivity refers to immune reactions that can be rapidly progressing and, in the case of anaphylaxis, are occasionally fatal. To that end, identification of the associated ...allergen is important for facilitating both education and allergen avoidance that are essential to long-term risk reduction. As the number of known exposures associated with anaphylaxis is limited, discovery of novel causative agents is crucial to evaluation and management of patients with idiopathic anaphylaxis. Within the last 10 years several apparently separate observations were recognized to be related, all of which resulted from the development of antibodies to a carbohydrate moiety on proteins. Interestingly, the exposure differed from airborne allergens but was nevertheless capable of producing anaphylactic and hypersensitivity reactions. Our recent work has identified these responses as being due to a novel IgE antibody directed against a mammalian oligosaccharide epitope, galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose (“alpha-gal”). This review will present the historical summary of the identification of cetuximab hypersensitivity due to alpha-gal IgE and discuss the non-primate mammalian meat food allergy as well as current goals and directions of our research programs.

Electric utilities and regulators primarily rely on rate design strategies and economic incentives to achieve customer load malleability at the residential level. However, demand-side management strategies are broadening to incorporate new motivational cues based on pro-social impulses to reduce negative environmental impact and contribute meaningfully to local communities. This evolving relationship between residential customers and utilities is explored to better understand the potential for load malleability achieved through non-economic incentive structures and rate design. Following a review of interdisciplinary perspectives on pro-social behavior and utility demand-side management strategies, we analyze the impact of a pro-social demand response program on the energy use of over 16,000 households served by a municipally owned electric utility in Burlington, Vermont, USA. Results indicate that the program achieved a 13.5% decrease in energy use during the peak annual event in August 2018 with a return on investment of 11 to 1 for the distribution utility. This study builds on the work of other researchers studying individual energy behavior change and supports the argument that pro-social incentives can improve the effectiveness of demand response programs.
The long-term survival of plasma cells is entirely dependent on signals derived from their environment. These extrinsic factors presumably induce and sustain the expression of antiapoptotic proteins ...of the Bcl-2 family. It is uncertain whether there is specificity among Bcl-2 family members in the survival of plasma cells and whether their expression is linked to specific extrinsic factors. We found here that deletion of the gene encoding the antiapoptotic protein Mcl-1 in plasma cells resulted in rapid depletion of this population in vivo. Furthermore, we found that the receptor BCMA was needed to establish high expression of Mcl-1 in bone marrow but not spleen plasma cells and that establishing this survival pathway preceded the component of plasma cell differentiation that depends on the transcriptional repressor Blimp-1. Our results identify a critical role for Mcl-1 in the maintenance of plasma cells.

Vesicular glutamate transporters (VGLUTs) control quantal size of glutamatergic transmission and have been the center of numerous studies over the past two decades. VGLUTs contain two independent ...transport modes that facilitate glutamate packaging into synaptic vesicles and phosphate (Pi) ion transport into the synaptic terminal. While a transmembrane proton electrical gradient established by a vacuolar-type ATPase powers vesicular glutamate transport, recent studies indicate that binding sites and flux properties for chloride, potassium, and protons within VGLUTs themselves regulate VGLUT activity as well. These intrinsic ionic binding and flux properties of VGLUTs can therefore be modulated by neurophysiological conditions to affect levels of glutamate available for release from synapses. Despite their extraordinary importance, specific and high-affinity pharmacological compounds that interact with these sites and regulate VGLUT function, distinguish between the various modes of transport, and the different isoforms themselves, are lacking. In this review, we provide an overview of the physiologic sites for VGLUT regulation that could modulate glutamate release in an over-active synapse or in a disease state.
Disposal of carbonless copy paper (CCP) paper sludge during the 1960s contaminated a site in the USA with PCBs. Despite historic records of CCP sludge disposal and absence of evidence of any other ...disposal, a dispute arose among the parties over the source of the PCBs. Aroclor 1242 is well documented as the PCB mixture used in CCP, yet Aroclors 1242, 1248, 1254, and 1260 were reported by the analytical laboratory. How could the PCBs at a single, small site be reported as four different Aroclors? Some claimed that there had to be at least four Aroclors source inputs to the site. Disposal of four different Aroclors at this site would simply defy logic and the historic record. Weathering of the mixtures is part of the story. A larger issue is the conflict between the intent of the USEPA 8082 method to determine the total PCB content in environmental samples to facilitate environmental cleanup and disposal decisions within a regulatory context versus the data users’ intent to identify the PCB sources. This inappropriate extension of the data leads to erroneous conclusions. To mitigate problems like this, laboratory analysis requests need to be matched to the intended data usage; conversely, the data must not be over-interpreted beyond the limits of the method. The PCB analysis community needs to develop a better articulation of the limits of Aroclor identification for the broader community that may naïvely assume that if the laboratory reports “Aroclor 1248,” then someone must have placed Aroclor 1248 at the site. After all, when a laboratory reports “lead” or “chloroform,” those identifications are never in question.
Associated with gastritis, peptic-ulcer disease, and gastric carcinoma, Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) also has been associated with decreased cognitive function and dementia. In this study, we used ...data from the UK Biobank to further examine associations between H. pylori seropositivity and serointensity and performance on several cognitive tasks in adults 40 to 70 years of age (M = 55.3, SD = 8.1). In these analyses, H. pylori seropositivity (i.e., either positive or negative for H. pylori) and serointensity (concentration of antibodies against H. pylori antigens) in adjusted models were associated with worse function on tasks of Numeric memory, Reasoning, and errors on the Pairs matching test but better function on the Tower rearrangement task. Together, these findings suggest that H. pylori seropositivity and serointensity might be associated with worse cognitive function in this age group.
