The extraordinary discoveries in the skies made by Galileo induced Campanella to rethink some of the principles of his philosophical system, an operation which he undertook with courage, despite his ...doubts and perplexities, as he tried to save some of its key aspects while adapting others. The result was that the pages of his works that reflect this crisis have a complex, convoluted appearance, since they are the result of a stratification of different materials. Campanella possessed a precocious awareness of the possible difficulties that the new cosmology could come up against when confronted by theologians, and he immediately tried to indicate roads that would lead to agreement with some strands of the ecclesiastical tradition that were alternatives to Aristotelianism.

«Humility is a magnet for virtue». Self-Portrait of a philosopher in Campanella’s Ethica. The concluding chapter of Campanella’s Ethica deals with sublimity, the ‘heroic virtue’ which establishes the ...rule of the desire for human excellence. Sublimity represents the summation and apex of all the other virtues discussed in the preceding chapters. The excellence of the sublime, or magnanimous, person does not consist in potentially fallacious extrinsic signs, such as wealth, nobility or honor, but rather in the exercise of virtue and in discovering oneself to be an image of the divine. In his description of the various characteristics of the ideal figure of the magnanimous person Campanella presents an incisive manifesto of the dignitas hominis while sketching an evident self-portrait.

In his astrological works, Cardano often declares his intention to save astrology from the decadent condition into which it had fallen and to defend its dignity against those who criticized it as a ...vain, superstitious and impious doctrine. By way of illustrating Cardano’s high esteem for this noble art, we are here publishing an Italian translation of his dedicatory letter to the Scottish archbishop John Hamilton, which introduces Cardano’s commentary on Ptolemy’s Quadripartitum. Referring to Ptolemy is necessary in order to recover the truth and excellence of this doctrine.

A friend of Galileo and author of the renowned utopia The City of the Sun, Tommaso Campanella (Stilo, Calabria,1568- Paris, 1639) is one of the most significant and original thinkers of the early ...modern period. His philosophical project centred upon the idea of reconciling Renaissance philosophy with a radical reform of science and society. He produced a complex and articulate synthesis of all fields of knowledge - including magic and astrology. During his early formative years as a Dominican friar, he manifested a restless impatience towards Aristotelian philosophy and its followers. As a reaction, he enthusiastically embraced Bernardino Telesio`s view that knowledge could only be acquired through the observation of things themselves, investigated through the senses and based on a correct understanding of the link between words and objects. Campanella`s new natural philosophy rested on the principle that the books written by men needed to be compared with God`s infinite book of nature, allowing them to correct the mistakes scattered throughout the human `copies` which were always imperfect, partial and liable to revisions. It is in the light of these principles that he defended Galileo`s right to read the book of nature while denouncing the mistake of those - be they Aristotelian philosophers or theologians - who wanted to stop him from carrying on his natural investigations. However, Campanella maintained that the book of nature, far from being written in mathematical characters, was a living organism in which each natural being was endowed with life and a degree of sensibility that was appropriate for its preservation and propagation. Nature as a whole was an organism in which each single part was directed towards the common good. This is the reason why Campanella thought that nature had to be regarded as an ideal model for any political organisation. Political structures were often ruled by injustice and violence precisely because they had departed from that natural model. This book charts Campanella`s intellectual life by showing the origin, development and persistence of some of the fundamental tenets of his thought. TOC:I. The Book of Nature. II. Ever since Campanella's writings began circulating, his use of Latin has been criticized by those who considered it incorrect and not in line with the rules of the classics. Yet Campanella himself ...defends the legitimacy of making use – in both Latin and Italian – of a language that is well-suited to express the innovative contents of his philosophy. He highlights how excessive preoccupation with the external form often conceals the lack of original thought and points to the ethical-political decline of society. Therefore, he intentionally uses metaphors and images derived from natural philosophy, from the world of farmers and common people, and from his own biographical experience, as a vehicle for conveying political and philosophical ideas.
